Elks 797 Golf Club

About
The 797 Elks Golf Club, formerly known as Quail Lakes Golf Course, has changed more than its name since first opening in 1961. When the course was up for sale in the 1980s, the trustees of the adjacent Elks 797 Lodge purchased the property in order to keep a public golf course for the community. The front nine was created well before the back nine was completed. Although the two nines provide a vastly different look and feel, they provide plenty of variety that manages to meld seamlessly into a great round. The ever-changing landscape adds to the course's diversity. Mature trees and tall grasses line the fairways, making accuracy essential, and you'll also find strategically placed bunkers lurking along the greensides. There are definitely some challenges in store but with careful course management, you'll be rewarded with some birdie opportunities.

Getting rough
It's towards the end of the season and the course is definitely showing.
This course is like most people's game...average.
Based on the other reviews, I knew what I was getting. A course that has seen better days and is struggling to recover. The fairways had a lot of crabgrass. The rough was non existent (which was fine, since my driving was terrible). The greens were in rough shape...it looked like root rot. Two of them were closed. There are a couple of holes where the tee box is in the danger zone of inaccurate shots from the group behind. But it didn't matter. I wanted to take my terrible golf game to a real course instead of a range (where you can only hit off mats) and see where I was at. Like the Elks 797, my game has some crab grass, root rot and layout issues, so we were a perfect match. If you live near Wilmington and want a no pressure round of golf on a course fit for duffers, this could be your course.
The price brings me back, course is good enough!
I enjoy playing this course. The hot deal price is lit. Greens aren't terrible. Fairways leave a bit to be desired, but it's open and a fun layout. Will definitely be back.
Needs Attention
Groundskeeper really needs to work on the greens and the fairways. They were some of the worst I have ever played on. I was disappointed to see how the course conditions were. The course could use a major upgrade.
Elks 797 Golf Course
The course is getting better. They’re doing a lot more of work on the course. There’s still no sand in any of the bunkers, except weeds. Hope they start doing some work on that. Otherwise the course is in good shape
We had a great time!
Played this course with my husband and 2 sons. We had low expectations based on previous reviews and cost. The friendliness of staff was wonderful and the overall quality of the course exceeded our expectations. Was there areas for improvement, absolutely! Was it a “goat pastures”, absolutely not! We only lost 1 ball each and that was due to intentional water hazards. The course was definitely wet and cart paths as well as some greens are in definite need of repair. But I’ve paid way more for way worse courses. Give this place a shot, hopefully you’ll see it’s not as bad as some would have you believe.
Unkept and in disrepair
The fairways were not mowed and had dead spots. It appears that it is just fescue until the green. The greens were very patchy with dead spots. The bunkers were unplayable with weeds and water. It was $35 for the 18 so if just need to get swings in , then go. If not spend, spend and extra $20 and go somewhere else.
Goat track
Can't tell fairway from rough due to weeds. 50% of every green is burnt out despite record level rain fall amounts lately. I give this place a 1 out of 10.

Great course for the price, friendly staff and decent carts with basic range finders
