Rose City Golf Course is the second oldest municipal track in the Portland area. In 1921, A.H. "Jay" Gould played his first round of golf ever at Eastmoreland Golf Course. After returning home, he decided to look for a good place to hit golf balls and came upon The Rose City Speedway. He spoke with C.P. Keyser of the City Park Bureau and obtained permission to burn the tall grass on the infield so that golf balls could be found.

Jay and friend Herbert George used shovels and hoes to carve out a nine-hole course on the speedway infield. Tin cans were used for cups, packing cases for tee-boxes, and iron rods and rags for flags. The Oregonian and Journal Newspapers ran a story on the new golf course and 30 golfers showed up the following Sunday to hit balls around on the burnt grass and dirt. The main hazard was a head-on train collision that occurred earlier in the summer and partially blocked the seventh green.

After a few weeks, the Rose City Golf Association was founded which marked the beginning of the course. Full cooperation from the city and donations from businesses and individuals solidified the construction. George Ott drew up a nine-hole plan and work began in the spring of 1922. Play continued in the spring, but was stopped in the summer due to long grass and no mower. Play started again in the fall, but stopped again due to motorcycle racing. In the winter of 1922-23, the viaduct on the west end of the track washed out and put an end to the races. On Jan. 31, 1923 the first green fee ticket was sold to Jay Gould and in the spring, more than 800 played in one day. The city then took over the course completely.

Today, Rose City Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-72 course with rolling fairways that are lined with a variety of large trees. Water comes into play on holes 10, 11, 14, and 15 and greenside bunkers are well placed.

Excellent experience

Always a great experience...great condition, great staff and grill room, vintage "old school" golf experience! Highly recommend it; my favorite public course in PDX.

Too expensive for the conditions

After recently punching and sanding the greens they should reduce the cost to play if they want more business.

Larger then I expected

I played RC for the first time in many years. It was a pretty drippy and cold day, but I was pleasantly surprised at the conditions. The course drains decently, and while I had mud on my ball all day, I didnt plug once and the ground was relatively firm. The holes are pretty straight forward, not too difficult, or extravagant. The 2 new greens 9/18 i think, were very nice! Looking forward to hitting up this close by course, a nice break from glendo. I played for $9, really cant ever beat that.

Great Muni Course

Fairways lined with trees. Great city course. No formal driving range, so that is the main drawback. We went to a range elsewhere in NE Portland, than drove over to play 18.

Pushing the golf season

The air is warmer but the ground is still very wet and very recently sanded! There is fresh sand on the fairways and greens. A rolling putt of 15 feet collected an 1/8 of sand around the equator and came to a halt. Getting ready for spring I’m sure and for as much rain as we get , this place is still one of the best to play this time of the year. Give it a bit to allow the sand to settle in.

Can't beat it for an affordable fast weekday round

I love being out a Rose City on the weekdays. There might be a handful of other groups out on the entire course. I played through one 3some, but otherwise felt I had the entire course to myself. A great place to work on ones game. I squeezed a 3 hour 18 holes in during a long lunch break.

Some of the greens aren't perfect, there is some areas off the fairways where recent storms knocked debris off trees that wasn't completely cleaned up yet. Overall though this is a great round of golf for a very affordable price. The layout of the course is excellent, and a good use of the land available. Challenging but accessible.

Not Bad!!

Not bad, considering the rain we've had. I wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised to see that it wasn't near as muddy as I had anticipated. The greens were slow, but that pretty much goes with winter golf.
