Pocono Hills Golf Course
About
Surrounded by the Pocono Mountains, the Pocono Hills Golf Course (formerly Fernwood Resort & Country Club) was carefully carved from wooded hillsides. Condos and other residences were later built near the golf course and although they are situated quite close, the round is still enjoyable. The layout is tight with narrow fairways that are lined with trees. The front nine is easier than the back where more dramatic elevation changes come into play. Many of the greens have elevations of over 50 feet, making approach shots a formidable test. There are also a number of tricky doglegs that are practically 90 degree turns. The layout rewards straight, accurate drives and the greens putt fast and true. There are a number of challenging holes, especially the 10th and 14th, but overall Pocono Hills Golf Course is approachable enough for all skill levels.

No longer worth it.
Unfortunately it sounds like some staff changes were made and it shows on the course. This course use to be excellent value for the money. Now its been let go and no longer worth the trip with other courses in much better condition nearby. Sad, I played this course a dozen times and always loved it for the price, now its just another course that has been mismanaged and let go.
Complete side note, the entire back 9 was closed due to "cracked greens" there was zero note of this when booking online. Drove an hour to not only find a course thats half open, but a course that is in horrible condition.
Horrible condition
Drove over an hour to find a sign on their door saying “No Refunds” and charged me $70 for the worst course conditions I’ve ever seen. They should pay me $70 to play this dumpster of a course.
Course was in terrible condition.
Overall course condition was awful. On many holes, the greens were unplayable due to what looked like diseased grass and the greens were just patches of grass amongst dead patches.
Pathetic
Absolutely disgraceful they would charge any more than a fee for use of the golf cart. The course itself was an embarrassment as I booked a foursome inviting my Son his fiancée and Son in law. I was charged $270. A fair fee would have been $50.
Poor conditions
They have a sign on the door at the pro shop stating that the back 9 greens are in rough shape and tell you no refund..They are saying it is because of lack of rain but they are in really poor condition as are some of the fairways..on hole 15 I hit my second shot on to the green well above the hole knowing the green has a natural slope from right to left and it rolled all the way off to the fringe..I made a really good put that lipped out went about 18" above the hole and again rolled all the way off the green again about 40ft !
Greens cracked
Very hilly course. Front 9 okay, but back 9 fairways are in poor condition and greens are cracked. Overall poor shape.
High school golf tournament prevented playing all 18 holes
Arrived to find a golf tournament happening and was only able to play the back nine. Course conditions on the back nine were bad due to an irrigation issue. Greens were dried and cracked.
I was given a rain check for 18 holes.
Horrendous conditions!
They're having some issues. I generally like this course even though it has a couple of unfair holes. (Hit a good drive on 5 or 11? Good luck finding your ball. If you do, you probably won't have a shot.) And a few bizarre holes (the par 5 17 is ridiculous, although you play a "cheat" and hit through the dogleg where the townhouses used to be).
However, they have serious problems now. The greens are burned out, and half of them have turned to orange peel. Many are unputtable. A lot of the fairways are also burned out hardpan. I'll probably stay off this course until next spring.
Terrible condition
Avoid this course, the greens are in terrible conditions especially the back 9. Shameful they are charging regular rate to play. Sign on the ProShop says the irrigation is broken but it seems like the overall course has turned for the worst. Won’t be back for a while.
It was playing on the moon
Course was in terrible shape. We had the first tee time and there were beer cans on the green flag pins not in cups, abandoned golf carts and the fairways and greens sucked. .
Despicable Conditions
I’ve been playing golf for over 30 years. I usually play pocono hills at least once a year. I sincerely have to say that I have never seen such poor green conditions in all my years of playing. The Utah salt flats are more playable. They have a serious fungus issue and more than half of the greens are cracking with very little grass. They should have notified Golf Now and tee off of these conditions. Don’t throw your money away. You would have better conditions in a vacant parking lot I’ll never play pocono hills again.
Poor playing conditions
No irragation caused the whole course burn out. No trap repair or refurbishment.
The course is on its last legs.
The course needs everything from a new course manager/greens superintendent, irragation system upgrades, and sand trap rejuvenation.
Meh
This place is very poorly managed. Greens are horrible. Yesterday, there were groups of five starting off, then skipping holes and slowing play all day. There are no rangers on the course. If you are serious about the game of golf, play somewhere else.
Lesser Known PA Mountsin Course
I have been vacationing in Hawley, PA for the better part of 30 years as my wife owns a time shared lake house at a popular resort in the area. I decided to change things up and play a course that I had never played before. It’s located about an hours drive away, which I didn’t feel was too bad. My tee time was for 11:20am but I arrived about an hour early to check in and to make god use of the practice putting green. Unfortunately, I was told by the staff member checking me in at their practice green is unavailable as it is under repair. However, he said that he had no issues if I wanted to start my round early as the only golfer he had on schedule after my tee time was 11:30am . So I made use of this and took my time as a single. Most fairways were in good condition. Although some greens were showing signs of a recent fungal condition that was being treated. This made some putting questionably and difficult but nothing that I had not experienced before. The pace of play was decent and only slowed down at the tee box for Hole #16. The highlight of my round was hole #18. I had an exceptionally good drive off the elevated tee that made through the top of the trees on the left hand side leaving me with a pitch to an inviting green. My 3/4 swing with my Approach Wedge stuck the green. 3 -4 feet away from the pin! Finishing my round with a nice birdie.
The concessions after my round was also very welcome end of my day. I recommend the Chicken Quesadilla.. so good! For the price, this course offers a challenging round of golf and the restaurant is also very affordable meal options as well.
Too bad
Sand traps not taken care of, greens somewhat brown, pin placement on 15 very unfair.
