placement is key

This course had character on every hole, well worth the 2 hr drive. I'm always in search of hilly courses that make you think of your placement of every shot, and this delivered big time!

Poor Conditions

I was shocked to see how poorly conditioned the course was. Who air raids the greens in mid August? The "new" bunker on 6, 8, 12 have not taken. It has killed all the grass around these bunkers. This course is usually in great shape. I'd be embarrassed if I were Galen Hall. They really need to fix the grass conditions. They are awful

Gem

Really great layout with some tricky holes. Having course knowledge is helpful. Conditions were great and pace of play went well. Highly recommend it! Staff is friendly. One tip to keep in mind is the gps for driving there will take you to the wrong side of course so you may want to call club house or just put in the gps for the restaurant!

Galen Hall

Course was in fantastic shape as always. Fairways are the best in south central PA in regards to public courses.

hidden gem

I had read some nice reviews about Galen Hall and decided to give it a try after getting an amazing 11 dollar rate to play today. I was given the low down on the course in the pro shop about it being designed by A. W. Tillinghast a very long time ago. It was only a 70 min ride from the Philly burbs and its tucked away in the rolling hills in the middle of nowhere.

When you step to the 1st tee, it looks like you are playing at a private club with how nice everything is manicured. The tees are in great shape and the fairways are like carpet in most cases. You just do not expect these types of course conditions at a mid price public track, and it was enjoyed thoroughly.

The course is tight and has huge elevation changes. You need to play here a few times to understand where you can miss shots otherwise you can make plenty of errors in judgement. The par 4's are generally short but most are severely uphill and require precise short irons. This course boasts 6 par 5's and almost all can be reached in 2 with good drives for the top player. I played the back tees and generally found a 240-250 distance for a 2nd shot to the par 5's.

The par 3's can really hurt you on this course as there are 3 of them that may be the toughest holes to par. The 4th hole is 195 yds of all carry over a creek . The 15th hole is once again a 195 yds shot over a creek and a real tough shot. The 17th plays severely uphill and requires a 200 yd blast.

The bunkering on this course is really good and the fairway traps have fescue around them like you'd see at Merion. The greens have slope to them and you have to be underneath the hole to score well.

All in all, the course is a hidden gem and I highly recommend a day trip to come here for tremendous value and a challenging course.

Get a Galen Hall pass

A good, challenging and interesting layout.

Not long in total (6200+ from back tees), but the short-playing par 5s are offset by some longish par 3s (e.g. 171 (uphill), 193, 195 yards).

Not easy. The back tee/blue tee slope of 127 is probably about right.

Course was in great shape, especially the greens. They’re smallish with subtle slopes that significantly affect speed.

The only real negative is the par 5 #2, one of the quirkiest holes I’ve ever seen. Without going into further detail, I’ll just say a road – a real two-lane double yellow line road – runs through it and I played it 5-iron, gap wedge, L-wedge.

Still, I’d give it a solid 4 stars out of five.

A real treat, especially at a super hot $14.49 Hot Deal price.

Upgrading

Conditions were excellent. This course has always been a challenge and with the new fairway traps surrounded by high grass, it is imperative to be in the right place.

Every club in the bad...

Great course with quick greens...beware in the summertime. The course has great length from the white tees which is rare for this area. I'd like to think that if you drive it about 240 you'd really enjoy it. If not tee it forward or it'll be a long day. Most courses seem to be a driver/wedge to the green but you can use all the clubs in your bag. I don't even pull my driver till the 5th hole.
