Lakewood Links

About
The Links at Lakewood was designed by Porter Gibson, who is a native of nearby Charlotte. Located in Sumter, this is one of the area's most popular golf courses. It has a challenging but playable design that will appeal to players of all skill levels. Four different sets of tees make it even more accommodating. Water is a prominent feature of the course but there are strategically placed sand traps to contend with as well. The narrow fairways also demand accuracy. Water comes into play most notably on the signature 13th hole. This tricky par 3 has an island green that forces golfers to think creatively. The hole is followed by an equally challenging double dogleg par 5. The Links at Lakewood boasts excellent greens that putt fast and true.

Great Day of Golf
We had a Great time. For winter/early Spring this course is in Great Shape !! We have played it once a week for last 5 weeks. This is a FUN course and Good Value. Kay is a Sweetheart on the front desk.
Great course!
Fairways were in great condition. Greens superb! Enjoyed the first visit, will return! Beautiful views, especially hole 13!
Perfect greens
The greens were perfect with no bad spots and rolled fast. There is also plenty of grass around the greens if you have to play an errant shot. Tee boxes and fairways were also in great condition. My only gripe is that I played in the mid afternoon when it was the hottest and the water coolers on the course were empty.
Back on my playlist
This course has made a complete 180 degree turn from just a year ago. Although this time of year the Bermuda is dormant, it is still very full in the fairways. All of the tee boxes have been over seeded and the bunkers have gotten a lot of attention. A lot of unneeded foliage has been removed, especially around the water hazards. Greens are in great shape also.
Much improved
I had played this course a couple times a year and it was never great. I liked it because it was cheap and not very busy. This time I was completely surprised by how the course has improved. The greens were smooth and true, the bunkers were very playable, the fairways were in great shape and there was even drinking water where there previously wasn't any. The best part is that the price is still reasonable.
One of the best we played on our trip
My buddy and I make a trip down to Santee, SC every year from Connecticut, In March of 2014 we decided to wonder off outside of Santee and booked a trip to the Links at Lakewood. When we arrived we talked to the owner and he told us he just bought the course and had plays to put a lot of work into the course. We went out and played and I do have to say it was a work in progress. Fairways were a mess, they were taking down a number of trees. Our trip this included a trip back to Limks at Lakewood to see how far they advanced. To our surprise the course was in terrific shape. We ran into the owner once again (Don is a terrific gentleman). and we discussed the course from 2014 to 2015 and my buddy and I could not say enough good things about the course. We enjoyed it so much we ended up playing 54 holes in one day. We will be back every year. The southern belle at the counter was fantastic. Keep up the great work and we will see you in March 2016,
New owner and managament March 2014
Course is now in great shape. New owner bought the club in March and shut it down for three months. Mini-verde on the greens now...looks great. Over 150 trees removed to facilitate grass growing. Lush fairways and very playable. Back tees will challenge the low handicapper. Great new staff and friendly pro. Thursday night 4 person 9 hole scramble and steak dinner for $25. Course has not looked this good in over 10 years. Time to try it again!
Unfriendly pro
Course pro was not happy with GolfNow or the green fee I had paid for Hot Deal; said he had tried to cancel service 2 or 3 times. Course is deteriorating--conditions are worse than last year.
This course has a nice lay-out
Friendly staff, Lay-out of the course fits the land. #13 is very intimidating (par 3- across the marsh/ water)
Greens again
Some need some work. just a little seed in some areas
Greens
Some greens are great while the others need some attention
Save your money
Nice layout, but conditions are horrible. Fairways barely have grass in them and the greens have dead/bare spots all over them where they aren't covered in weeds. This is one of the worst courses within 30 miles and they still charge as much as the better courses. If you have to play in Sumter, hit Beech Creek. Otherwise, stay in Santee/Wyboo for much better golf at similar prices.
