Golfer Reviews
So underrated
This is one of those courses that causes me to really question lists of course rankings. When I walked off the 18th green I had to laugh at what I had discovered in the days leading up to this round. Top 100 public lists are hard to crack, and in my opinion once you get past the top 60, the bottom 40 are pretty interchangeable. Yet, for GreyStone not to show up in GD, GM or GW's "Best in State" rankings or "top places you can play in each state," lists, is a head-scratcher.
GreyStone is a formidable golf course and a lot of fun to play. The shot and scenic value for me at points on this course were off the charts. There is a balance between holes that ascend and descend steep elevation changes, and flatter holes that rest in a valley near a rock quarry.
There is no easing into the round here. In fact, it may be my favorite opening hole I've ever played. The tee shot is framed by hardwoods and your target is blind, resting over a large sloping edge of the fairway, which reminded me of a dragon's tail. The yawning fairway resembles a ski slope and drops dramatically to the green. The saddle-like effect also keeps balls funneling toward the middle of the fairway, but miss it off either edge and good luck saving par.
Zoysia fairways provide for excellent lies and were among the best fairways I've played in recent memory. Two-thirds of the course is pretty open, but there is some thick stuff if you get too off line that will swallow up balls.
The bentgrass greens were very good and deceptively quick past the hole.
I loved the closely-mown areas around the green that made chipping exact. The large scallop-shaped bunkers were very consistent.
The par 3s on the front were rather pedestrian, but the two on the back are stellar - as good as you'll find.
True to the namesake of the course, rock outcroppings are prevalent throughout. The stone walls on several holes, particularly No. 10, were beautiful. The intermittent outcropping on the par-5 12th added an awesome element to the hole. It was like playing through a mine field.
There are several short, straightforward par 4s scattered throughout, so take advantage of these to score well, then soak in the uniqueness of holes like Nos. 1, 5, 9, 10, 12 17 and 18. In fact, 16, 17, 18 provide a tremendous closing stretch.
This is a highly underrated track that you can get awesome hot deals thru Golfnow on. If in the Nashville area, it is a must-play.
Tip: in lieu of a traditional yardage guide, be sure and grab a yardage card from the pro shop. It is very helpful in seeing the layout of holes and does provide yardages to hazards, etc.

Losing greens.
Course was in good condition, but the greens were not. Lots of dead areas and patchy spots. Great layout, unfortunately ragged greens, due to the area drought. When greens are in shape, great place to play.
Greens Are Gone-Done-Finished
All the greens are burnt out…stay away unless you don’t care about putting…!
Horrible greens
My son and I absolutely love playing this course but when we played today, we were in shock. The tee boxes, fairways, and rough were in excellent condition, however the greens were in absolutely awful conditions. Once you hit the green, you could not putt or anything. Just a bunch of areas on the green with no grass at all. Definitely need to get this fixed for us play here again.
Great course, bad greens
The course was in absolutely perfect shape, other than the bent greens had been completely destroyed by the recent drought and heat. It was still enjoyable as the layout and other conditions were great, but automatic two putt rule was in effect. I would highly recommend this course, but not until some time passes to allow the greens to heal.
Fix your Greens!!!
Tee Boxes: Beautiful
Fairways: Some of the nicest around
Greens: Suck. They are horrible. Seems to have been burnt up sometime in the past.
Staff was super friendly. Free range balls made it easy to warm up. Chipping/putting green was horrible. Burnt up. Patchy.
We went straight from the range to the #1 Tee. Had to wait on the group ahead of us a couple times. But, they were playing at a good speed. The group behind us drove into to us a few times when we were getting to the green. We should have been MAD, but someone in their group was driving 290-300yd. So, kudos to THAT guy.
Greens were some of the worst I played on ALL year. We SHOULD have been told about them and offered a discount for our round. But . . . . they didn't
Course Review.
Great track. Greens in horrible condition, basically unplayable. Shocked they still charge full price. Love the layout of this course, just unfortunate they lost tbe greens.
No good green
The condition of the putting greens has been terrible lately. Why are they being maintained this way? It would be better to wait until the greens are in perfect condition before accepting guests
Course Conditions
I was very frustrated. The greens were awful. It would be one thing if I knew that going in but there was no indication they were under repair and maintenance. Typically a fantastic course but definitely disappointed this time.
Greens in trouble
Love this course , great layout, great guys in the clubhouse, fair pricing and amazing chicken salad but it's all ruined right now by the conditions of almost every green. Never seen a sprinkler on or the greens being watered so no rain means no grass on the most important part of the course. Please guys it may be too late but there is a lot of golf left in the season but for me I may be done here till next spring 🥲
Greens
The fairways and tee boxes are in great shape. A few of the collars were recently sodded (wasn’t a big deal). Bunkers could use a little TLC. The greens were in terrible shape - they aren’t as bad as they were last year but they’re still terrible compared to other courses in the area. Nothing rolled consistently. It’s a shame because this is a great course but until they figure out the greens it isn’t worth the drive or the money.
Incredibly disappointed.
I’ve been coming to Greystone for several years despite it being over an hour drive away and was excited to return to the course I thought I knew to be sadly mistaken. I looked online for tee times and booked a tee time that was $41 on the website only to be charged $70 at the clubhouse. When asked about this, I was simply told “Well you called the clubhouse to book and that was online”. Not only is this false advertisement but just terrible business. So be incredibly careful with booking and if they try to charge you more then literally just get on the website right in front of them and book the cheaper rate to show them how dumb their policy is.
I could’ve gotten over the atrocious greens and terrible shape of the collars of the greens but after driving over an hour to get charged nearly double what I booked it really just left a sour taste in my mouth. The views are still beautiful and it’s still such a cool property, but I couldn’t recommend playing elsewhere more until they get their stuff together regarding conditions and overall business.
Solid course
Enjoyed the course. Beautiful area and nice views. Course in good condition in fairways. Greens seemed to have some burn soots and bumpy in spots. No water ion the course to drink was a bummer. Add water and get greens in good condition and it would be spot on.
First time
Very interesting layout and in great condition. First time player but we will definitely revisit. Greens recently punched and some were still a little rough. Overall a solid experience. Very slow back nine pace (2 1/2 hrs)
Aeration Alert / Course Construction
Normally I wouldn’t write a review like this but there was zero notice online, over the phone, or on this app. The course is undergoing pretty substantial construction. They just aerated. Greens are a disaster from not only the plugs but from being soft and wet constantly. Many greens have been completely stripped of its fringe and is now either just dirt or fresh sod with 4” of rough on them. #16 was straight closed, so we only played 17 holes. Normally, I don’t care about this, most of this stuff is normal maintenance and also you want to see the chorus making improvements. But there was no notice anywhere telling you that the course was undergoing drastic construction, has entire holes closed, and all the greens are completely aerated with no top dressing. Seems I would have spent my money elsewhere. Sort of a waste of a really beautiful day.
Shocked at the poor condition
One Par five was completely closed down. Several greens had been stripped down the the dirt at the collar. The ones that did have sod had new sod with crack and super high. Very very disappointed. I have never left a golf course review because people usually get what they pay for, but in this case please save yourself the drive and the money. 100% not worth it.
Weather is a pain
Never played here before. My paired up players were kind. Rain delayed tee times and Only got to play 9. But they give out receipt rain checks. Course is beautiful and challenging. Alot of blind shots l, bunkers and water hazards. However, minimal trees. Hard to lose balls. It is expensive. But GolfNow makes it affordable.
The magazines might not be able to get the raters out there. It's not really close to anything and Nashville isn't really a hotbed of courses for raters to see. Sweeten's Cove had to make a tremendous effort to get enough raters (and that with big backing from the GolfClubAtlas crowd). All lists have flaws...witness the Top 50 list on this very site not having any of the 4 Bandon Dunes courses listed (for the exact reason that not enough people who write reviews for this site have played there).
