Should play here more often
Perfect weather and fast pace of play make every round enjoyable. There were a couple of rough greens and even a few more dicey tees but overall the condition was very good. The greens rolled very well.
Only play if you get a online deal!!
I have played Tanglewood many times over the last 15 years. It is a nice course with some very challenging holes. It is maintained fairly well. My main complaint is that they have raised the greens fees to a ridiculous level. This course is NOT worth $55.00 on a weekend morning. There are many courses in NE Ohio that are just as nice for $20.00 less. I would pay an extra $10.00 and play Boulder Creek which is 10 times as nice. Again you will enjoy a round here, just look for deals.
Course good, a bit rough around the edges though
First time out at Tanglewood. The actual playing experience was great. The course was fun and challenging, and in great shape. My biggest issue was with some of the off-course amenities one would expect at such an upscale course. For starters there is a range but it's rudimentary at best. There's only one size of buckets, small (About 30 balls) and it was $6 (most courses this would be about $3-$4). The bills were a mix of everything...range balls to balls found on the course. Also the teeing ground was pretty chewed up. Definitely expected a nicer range at such a course. Inside the clubhouse it was practical at best...a minimal snack bar (drinks, hot dogs, and chips...that's about it) and a few tables. Lastly on the course the biggest thing I found missing was water. Thankfully I talked to the clubhouse manager before the round and he told me there was no water on the course due to teenagers and residents of the surrounding homes abusing the coolers. A shame...you do need to take a drink of water here and there on the course during a round. Also odd was the scorecards/tee markers. Not one of them showed any hole routing at all. I was left to the GPS on my phone to navigate around the course. Why they couldn't include hole routings with yardages on the scorecards is perplexing. The course itself is great, just addressing a few of these rough edges could make a good round into a great round.
Tanglewood
Older course. No starter so people played in groups of 5 and very slow. Course conditions fair. Tee boxes poor. People were friendly. Course layout is hilly. Some challenging holes.
Pleasantly Surprised
Second time playing this course and I can see why the course has a rich history and held some tournaments in the past. Great layout is challenging but fair to well place and solidly hit shots. Greens received solid iron shots and rolled true. Worth every penny of the deals on GolfNow.com.
Enjoyable round
Have not played Tanglewood for many years. After plan I would highly recommend, and the conditions work country club-ish
Don
Inclomplete (but poor)
I've played Tanglewood before, and it was OK. Today, however, the pace of play was horrible. It took two of us an hour to play the first two holes. There is no ranger and the groups in front weren't allowing people to play through. The clubhouse reluctantly gave us a raincheck, but prorated it for the two holes we played.
With the vast number of public-access courses available in the area, I doubt I'll ever return ... even to cash in the raincheck.
Tanglewood in GREAT SHAPE
Playing Tanglewood for the last 25 years and this is the best shape the course has been in during my time playing it. The greens are in great shape, all bunkers have new sand, and fairways very nice. Management is even working on cart paths!
Go play this difficult but enjoyable golf course - especially during the week!!
Tough course, decent condition, slow play on Saturday Morning
First, Tanglewood is a difficult course. There are tons of elevation changes, and some blind shots, and most holes are tight and tree lined, lots of water and sand. The elevation is the biggest obstacle. Not a friendly course to beginners or shorter hitters.
The course conditions were about average for public golf these days. To me that means there are some issues with the course, there was some wet spots in low areas, some bare spots on tee boxes, bunker sand firm and inconsistent. The greens and fairways were in good shape.
The biggest complaints I had were, there were two large groups that ruined the tee sheet. Tee times got moved back an hour I am guessing. They allowed my brother and I to play 15-18 as a warm up, then complete our 18, but we were out there for over 6 hours. One of the 4-somes in front of us was an entire two holes behind the group in front of them and caused almost every group behind them to wait on every shot. My second complaint was that there was no beverage cart or water out on the course. I rarely think not having a beverage cart is an issue, but when it is 90+ degrees on a Saturday when play is slow, you need to have something for players. I do not expect that during the week or at most courses, but Tanglewood still wants to be a top level club and this a basic stuff.
Slow play
It would have been nice to been given a heads up that a large group of slow golfers would be teeing off the back 9 first. I played the front 9 in 1 hour flat. Then waited 20 minutes to hit a tee shot on 10, and picked up my ball after waiting another 25 minutes.
Had I known these groups wouldn't be letting someone making the turn play through, I would have played the back 9 first. This information needs to be told to a person BEFORE they tee off.
Great Course
Booking through GolfNow enabled me to play a round w/a cart at a discount from the norm. Very challenging course with a lot of elevations and well-placed hazards. Fairways & greens were in excellent shape...I'm looking forward to playing again this season!
Should be better
The weather has been rainy so the high rough can be forgiven. Airation made putting difficult. But really there was nothing at the course that makes me want to go back
Coming Back but Expensive
This course has had its share of troubles, but there is signs of work being done and improvement all over the course. However at $55 for 18+ cart in late September one would not expect to find cracked fairways, clover-filled rough, and 90% of bunkers with big stones that are under construction. They do mention the bunker restoration on the website, but they should be marked GUR and are not. This is an amazing layout and great tough course, but the conditions and price don't line up. Also, the greens keeper needs to find some easier pins. A lot of the time if you missed a 20 footer you'd have a 6 footer coming back the other way. This course is tough enough without three-putting all day because every pin is on a knob.

Great staff once a great course on its way back
Thanks a lot for the review, Jeffrey -- we're always trying to improve our course in every way! Come see us again soon!
Conditions could be better
The overall conditions of the course were ok. Some of the tee boxes were in bad shape as were some spots not far off the fairways.
We appreciate your review, Stephen! We'll look into upkeep on the tee boxes and see what we can do. Hope we see you again soon!
Nice Track
I hadn't played Tanglewood since its days as a private course ... some 20+ years. The layout was wonderful (still). The scenic views were even better. However, the course used to be the best manicured course in NE Ohio and that is no longer the case. For the money, it was great and I will return again. But the greens were slow and uneven - and a little beat up, many of the tee boxes were bare dirt and there were some areas that really show the signs of financial neglect. They replaced about half of the traps with new sand, the other half are like concrete. Now, that's all the negatives. The positives are that it was a beautiful day, the course was fun to play, and I will absolutely go back again. For the $$$, it's hard to beat. The senior tee boxes give you the ability to be competitive in terms of distance and we enjoyed that. Plus, the 'pace of play' was good. We weren't rushed but neither were we delayed.
Thanks very much -- we appreciate your review! We're always trying to improve our course for the players' benefits, so we're always glad to get feedback. We'll be taking a closer look at maintenance on the course. We hope to see you again soon!
Thanks for your review, T -- we appreciate your feedback. We're constantly trying to improve our course and we like to keep players updated on our progress, so we'll look into marking the bunkers. Thanks again for taking the time to review us!
