Royal American Links Golf Club
About
Royal American Links Golf Club pays homage to the birthplace of golf, the seaside links of Scotland, an inspiration that is also reflected in the architecture of the clubhouse. The 18-hole course was created in the traditional link-style but with added features not typical of the classic design including water coming into play on nearly every hole. There are also large, deep bunkers protect the sloping greens, many of which are double-tiered. Royal American Links Golf Club's signature hole is the par-3 12th. Its green is guarded by a not only a large rock wall but also water to the front and left. There is a large bunker to the left of the green that will swallow any errant shots but players with a sharp short game will be able to manage.

Course is mediocre
The fairways are nice enough in some spots and the overall course is decently challenging for a newer golfer. But the bunkers are God awful need all new sad and some just need ripped out and start over. The greens are not in great shape either they need some attention and better maintenance.
Bad condition but high potential
Unfortunately this course sucks. The sad part is I think the course has a really challenging and beautiful design, the staff was awesome and friendly, and I loved the clubhouse and overall Links feel. However, the greens are like putting on my carpet, some greens just have patches without grass, the rough is so incredibly long that you’d think it’s the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. Until this place gets serious upkeep and maintenance, I would not bother playing here. If you do play here, accept that the conditions suck and be ok with that. It truly has tons of potential. In good shape, I would love it.
Nasty
Just horrible
Song and dance about last year
Club house said 8 on stent miter probably at 2
Greens a 0 out of 5
So disappointed this year….
I played a local course last year and hadn’t played Royal American for over a year. A friend wanted to get in the league there so we joined. Little did I know how awful the course conditions would be. First week of league (April 17th, 2025). Basically, free drops from any bunker. Allowed to “fluff” the ball in the fairways due to long grass and conditions. Allowed to move the ball on the greens to avoid the moonscape that plaques the majority of them. I have never played in a league where you had to make so many concessions for course conditions.
This used to be an awesome, beautiful course. The greens were so hairy you could putt with a sledgehammer and not get to the hole. I paid $450 for this league and it is a total scam. I will be requesting a refund for the remainder of the season as this isn’t even enjoyable. They say it is because of the storms and all the rain, but a few course very close to this one (Rattlesnake Ridge) lost 115 trees during the storms. They had crews working for two weeks to do the cleanup and that course is in perfect condition. So it cannot just be the storms. There is a lot of neglect going on there as well. They haven’t even cut the grass. No excuse for that. Just awful and so disappointing. Other courses in the area, Arrowhead Lakes, Wyandotte and even Hillcrest all have better conditions in fairways and greens. And they cost half or less of what RAL costs.
DID THE GROUNDS CREW QUIT?!
Greens were the slowest and most damaged I have seen in a very long time. It got to the point where I didn’t even care to putt. Even had to chip over dead spots while on the green. Very sad to see this place in such bad shape. The lady working at the restaurant was the only bright spot. Course needs some love and care to ever consider coming back!
Very disappointed
We purchased a $25 round on Golf now thinking the course is gonna be in good shape from the previous year. It was even worse, especially with all the rain. Their greens were unplayable. The fairways were OK. The fringes around the greens were U.S. Open type or basically backyard I forgot to cut my grass type grass. This course used to be amazing and I really enjoyed coming out here because the staff is extremely friendly. The course layout is amazing but the course needed to decide one or two things either closed down or put some money at this place because you are ripping people off.
It's like they don't care about the course anymore
Craters on the greens, fairways just cracked dirt in a lot of areas. Carts are so old and slow. Not worth the money I paid.
Shame
Layout is great, some very challenging holes. But the track itself is still just not cared for. Was hoping the rain and cooler weather would make a difference, but it sadly didn’t. Tee boxes are wrecked, fairways and rough both need a mow, greens have many many large dead spots, bunkers still don’t have sand and are just hard clay pits
Challenging but fun
Cool layout and obstacles. Would go back again. Some pretty far holes that I like.
This was the first time I played this course and always heard good things about it. Someone lied!!! Which is too bad because I feel the course was challenging.. And I’m not referring to how torn up all the greens were which made putting a real adventure… I will say the staff was very friendly.. Not gonna rush I to rush back to this course
Disaster
This course is a disaster for the price we paid. I have a feeling that they're collecting a much money as they can before closing. Some fairways had chunks of cut grass with high power lines spaning over and most greens had dead dry patches with ground separations up to an inch wide. Disappointment, I was hoping for a nice round on a links course.
Should close down
I hope they are closing this course. Maybe they sold it. The grass is all gone. They should just close the building, get rid of all staff, and let people go walk and play for free if they want to. Ever since they sold to Kemper sports, four of the six courses look like dead fields. Worse courses I’ve ever seen. I’m a member. Wish I’d known then they would let these courses become cow pastures. I’d like to know what their plans are for the course. Really bad place.
The drought has left its mark
Although it has been a long time since I have played this course, this is still a great course to play. I will say that there are a number of places on the course that will need some major attention, as this drought passes and the Ohio weather changes. I look forward to seeing this after the repairs and before the heat and sun get back to work.
Not what it used to be
Fairways and greens are cracking from how dry they are. Greens were just aerated and it’s like they drove a four wheeler across the greens since they are so torn up. Granted we are in a drought, but you’d think they would at least water. Tee boxes are worse than grass in a random field. Can tell this place gets a lot of play and they are happy to take your money but should better utilize it to better maintain the course. We were first tee time and they were certainly not ready for us. We offered to come back at the turn to pay since their system wasn’t operating. Gentleman in the pro shop had less personality than my golf ball. Girl at the turn was quite nice and accommodating which was probably the only plus of the day.
My advice to anyone looking to play here…go somewhere else with your $65…you’ll be better off!
Aeration on top of drought
Normally a great track, played in early summer and it was great. Understand the drought has been tough and expect the fairway to be dry but the greens were aerated 10 days prior to our round and the holes were still huge, most greens were unplayable some had large cracks in them. I hope they can recover next season. I don't see how they still charge full rates.
The dog track would be better...
What a terrible excuse for a golf course. What was once a beautiful course has been discarded into nothing but dead patches of grass.
Practice putting green is gone.
All tee boxes are barren. The overall ownership of this course as well as Clover Valley should be embarrassed
