Royal American Links Golf Club
About
Royal American Links Golf Club pays homage to the birthplace of golf, the seaside links of Scotland, an inspiration that is also reflected in the architecture of the clubhouse. The 18-hole course was created in the traditional link-style but with added features not typical of the classic design including water coming into play on nearly every hole. There are also large, deep bunkers protect the sloping greens, many of which are double-tiered. Royal American Links Golf Club's signature hole is the par-3 12th. Its green is guarded by a not only a large rock wall but also water to the front and left. There is a large bunker to the left of the green that will swallow any errant shots but players with a sharp short game will be able to manage.

This course has seen better days.
Following a girls high school practice round was excruciatingly slow. They were not replacing their divots, which along with other issues lent itself to dogtrack conditions. This used to be a top notch course, now it's as rough as a wilderness trail. The tee boxes were terrible, un-kept, sometimes the grass was almost as high as the rough. So disappointed, considering what the course used to be like.
Improving
Overall, fairways are in good shape, greens vary by hole some are spotty. 10 minutes between tee times helps the pace of play..
Love the layout of this course
Love playing this course. A few greens are struggling but the course is getting better every day.
Royal American
Over the years the golf course has been not very good. It is very nice to see the course conditions have improved. They have a couple problem greens but overall it is improving. Nice to see, a good layout.
Improving but greens are still a little rough
Definitely getting better but greens have some rough patches and bunkers are mostly not in good shape
Not what it once was, but not bad.
Coming back after a few rough years, but not what it once was. The fairways and greens were decent, but there are still a few patches of dead grass on the greens, and a few of the traps were untouched. Getting better, but still not what it once was... Keep working on it, and this could be a great course again!
Slightly ok
Very nice course layout but course maintenance poor.
Greens shaggy and marked up. Plenty of staff working but
not sure they know much. Nice club house for a wedding but not good for golf.
Overall condition
We've had a lot of rain in Ohio. The bunkers were really bad. I only got in two of them so that wasn't no big deal. The greens were a lot slower than normal but overall it was a great round and I understand what it takes to keep a course up and rain doesn't help
Won’t go back
I’m sure it was a great track years ago. Not anymore. Greens were possibly the worst I’ve ever played. Needs a large infusion of cash and a lot of TLC.
Royal American condition
All the bunkers were unraked not much sand in them but I didn't get in any of them. Played well shot, even par and was pretty satisfied
Not worth even $30
Ownership should be ashamed of this course, greens are trash, didn’t look like rough had been cut in weeks. I wouldn’t recommend anyone waste their time or money here
Ok but could be better with some work
I have played this course for quite a few years. It really seems to have gone down hill the past 4-5 years. It has a good layout but course conditions always seem to be an issue. Some of the greens need repaired very badly. There is also is no fresh sand in the bunkers and no rakes the day I played. With some work, it could be worth the price they charge for weekends $50-$55 and be a really nice course. I just cant justify it until the conditions improve. I will play it for less with hot deals on GolfNow like I did this time.
Not at the top if it’s game but not nearly as bad as you’ve heard
From most of the recent reviews you’d think you were reading about 2019 Cooks Creek (seriously recommended reading the reviews if you want a laugh) or present day Mastadon (you’ll see its picture in the dictionary next to the term “cow pasture”).
It’s not as bad as all that. Is it in its glory days? No, I play every year but missed the drought caused course issues some have mentioned. The course was fine last year and was a bit off this year admittedly (understandably so) but overall is still a good course. The greens were definitely glacially slow (more noticeable after having played Ohio State the few rounds prior, which has lightning fast greens). A couple greens were patchy but it wasn’t an epidemic like Cooks creek at the end. IYNYK. Some high rough, maybe a couple rough patches in the fairway., normally I’d rate this course a 4, but in its current state it’s a 3.5, 3 if you only go whole numbers.
And get out of here saying Wyandotte is better than this course. I’ve played there and RA is miles better on its worst day.
What happened
I haven’t played this course in a few years. The greens are patchy and browned with bumps. Like putting on a mine field. Sand traps are not maintained at all. No rakes anywhere. Tee boxes are full of divots. Looks like they have not been moved in years. If I had paid the full rate for this course it would have very disappointing. Probably won’t be returned. Too many other good well kept courses out there.
The other reviews are too harsh
Anyone who plays this course knows they suffered greatly from last year. Not a single blade of green grass on the course last year. Which is even more reason to give them more props. I fully expected it to be another catastrophe based on the recent reviews. There are bad spots in the fairway, and on the greens. But those are just hangover from last year. I thought everything was in good, not great, shape. Overall the course is trending upward again which is amazing to see. People saying they should fire the management have no idea how to run a golf course. The grass everywhere is extremely long, but from what it seems they are letting everything grow long to try and get rid of some of the bad spots. Not to mention the gallons of rain that this area got for a week prior. Give them some love for bouncing back in the position they were in. I would pay $30 to play this layout any time, I know the conditions will continue to improve, it’s early May.
Course has tons of potential but needs some work. Some greens were burnt from last year.
Course is mediocre
The fairways are nice enough in some spots and the overall course is decently challenging for a newer golfer. But the bunkers are God awful need all new sad and some just need ripped out and start over. The greens are not in great shape either they need some attention and better maintenance.
Bad condition but high potential
Unfortunately this course sucks. The sad part is I think the course has a really challenging and beautiful design, the staff was awesome and friendly, and I loved the clubhouse and overall Links feel. However, the greens are like putting on my carpet, some greens just have patches without grass, the rough is so incredibly long that you’d think it’s the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. Until this place gets serious upkeep and maintenance, I would not bother playing here. If you do play here, accept that the conditions suck and be ok with that. It truly has tons of potential. In good shape, I would love it.
