Woodlands/Lakeside at Shaker Run Golf Club
About
Shaker Run Golf Club offers 27 holes of championship golf that are played in three different 18-hole combinations. The Woodlands/Lakeside Course is the club's original layout designed by Arthur Hills. It was later joined by the gentler Meadows nine. Since opening in 1979, the Woodlands/Lakeside combination has come to be known as one of the best courses in the state. It features challenging elevation changes that are rare for a golf course in Ohio as well as several doglegs and numerous sand traps strategically placed throughout. As the names would suggest, there is also an abundance of water and trees on the course. The fifth hole on the Lakeside nine is Shaker Run's signature hole. The tee box sits nearly 100 feet above the hole and plays into the prevailing winds. It's tricky but if you play to the right of the green, scoring par is definitely possible.

A bit disappointing
I've played here quite a few time but this day I was disappointed with the condition of the course . There were an incredible amount of large dandelions, particularly in the rough. Some appeared to have been treated, others not. Fairways had a lot of bare spots. Bunkers needed sand. One bunker was full of gravel. Greens were okay but not great.
Not the Shaker Run of the past; Sad to see a course go this far down.
First and foremost, Shaker Run used to be my favorite course in the northern Cincinnati area. I have played there for years and remember the glory days when Pro-Am occurred there and it was ranked as one of the best public courses in all of Ohio. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case and it doesn't even rank as one of the best public courses in the area. Whether it be new management or poor management, I returned to play the course and did not even recognize it. If you want to play a course without sand bunkers (literally a construction hole rather than sand trap); fairways overcome with weeds; uncut grass making it play like a US Open; burnt greens, etc., then feel free to waste your money and time.
Upon providing this feedback to the clubhouse, I was told the course is in "Great Shape" which explains the problem. I will always have a place in my heart for Shaker Run....just not this version.
From Best to Worse in 10 Yrs
I've played the course a lot over the past 10+ years, been 2 yrs from my last round to today. Well, simply put, one of the best course 10 yrs ago to one of the worse. Worn out is the best description I can give it. Practice Range before the round is close, except for lessons. Rough and tee boxes are dandelion filled, and I mean filled. They did not fertilize this spring or the weeds would not be around. 90% of the bunkers were not playable, had to take your ball out it. The Pro Shop has nothing in it, no gold balls, no golf gloves, no clubs, a few shirts hanging around. If they are in transition, fixing the place up, you would not know it because no said a word. It is rough seeing it like this, 10 yrs ago, it was an outstanding facility. I don't know why it went downhill, but at the price I paid today, it is not worth it.
Perfect Everytime
I have now went through golf now several times this year and each and every round was perfect from start to finish. Not a single complaint.
Great Layout, Run Down Conditions
Played a weekday round at the Lakeside and Woodlands nines after not being on this course for at least a year. Great layout with elevation changes, water hazards, bunkers - every hole is unique. There were some ragged holes and condition issues a year ago but now the course just feels worn out. Fairway grass is thin over much of the course and you feel like you're hitting out of the mud (or I guess it would be hardpan if it were dry). Greens are well contoured but not true; ball wanders all over the place as it slows. Tee boxes have very little grass. Bunkers have no sand or the sand is so packed that a chip shot is preferred over an explosion shot. Retaining walls are decayed and crumbling, etc. etc. You get the idea.... I can't imagine what it would cost to put the course back in shape. Maybe the owners are just waiting for a developer to buy the course to convert to houses or condos and trying to keep a bit of revenue coming in from greens fees until then. It's a shame for such a superb course design but I guess a sign of the times in the golf business.
Best finishing holes in Ohio
The course has three 9 hole layouts. Each has challenges that make them fun to play. Lakeside and Woodland both have a dog leg 9th hole around water that are as picturesque as they are dangerous. Meadow has a dog leg 5th hole that is the same way. I never miss a chance to play this beautiful course when ever I visit Cincinnati. Its one you have to play.
Shaker20 years later
Wow houses and condos everywhere sure ruined a nice private feel the original 18 had when I played it twenty years ago I wanted to see the new 9 the meadows cool to see they honor Frank Licklier with his staff bag and clubs in a window next to the golf shop (he's now a PGA golfer that grew up playing there ) the meadows 9 was interesting I only made 7 holes because it was painfully slow but that's to imagine on a Saturday at 1:00 ? Paired with a golfer named Ben good player would wil play the course again
Good Public Course
3 9-hole courses. Very nice layout with water. Due to recent rain, some of the sand traps had excessive standing water.
Thanks for playing at Shaker Run. Glad you loved the layout!
Super day
The course was in fair shape, but a lot of fun to play with good fairways and fair ruffs. The greens were a little ruff.
Thanks so much for playing at Shaker Run we will tend to the conditions thanks for letting us know!
Fun and challenging course, I will be back!
I enjoyed my round at Shaker Run and will return to play again soon. I found the course to be in good condition and the holes were all unique and challenging. I loved the last hole Woodlands with two water hazards that influenced your first two shots on the hole. But there were many others like a short par four requiring an iron off the tee and a shorter par 5 that put placement at a premium.
Thanks so much for your review and the great rating! See you again soon, glad you loved the challenge!
Course conditions
Not the wonderful golf course it used to be. Greens were in good shape but fairways and tee boxes were rough.
Can you say Moss Creek?
This was once a prestigious golf course but not anymore.
I wouldn't waste my time to play here again!
We thank you for playing at Shaker Run and taking the time to review our course and the facility. We hope to see you again and we're working towards patching up anything we may have missed, thank you for letting us know!
Great fun. Lots of water
Lots of water challenges. Good course.
Great! Glad you loved the course and hazards. Come back soon!
tee time
had a 1:09 tee time. didn't tee off until 1:39. No f*$%ing starter at the tee box. turned 9 and the six pack of miller lites were warm.
Sorry to hear there was a delay on the starting hole we will let our staff know to address this so it doesn't happen again.
Loneliness
I played with a very slow player and was never pushed.
We're glad you liked the course, come out and see us again!
Bad shape
I know it is August BUT this IS Shaker Run. Fairways mostly were in horrible shape with lots of muddy spots. We had to play behind a group with 5 and they would not let us play through. (I was in a group of 3)
We regret to hear your round was slower than usual and conditions were not up to par during your round. Come back soon and let us know how we can make it a great experience!
Very nice course, exceptionally well maintained.
Beautiful layout, and incredibly good condition (particularly for the summer we've had in Ohio). Green were pretty quick. Nice pace, once we got started, never really had to wait on the group in front. Our group of 3 got caught be a group of 2 between the front and back nines, and we let them through. Other than that very smooth.
Only (very minor complaint) it was brutally hot, and only had cart service show up twice. (once on Lakeside and once on Meadows). Would've gladly bought more gatorade lol.
Thanks for letting us know we'll try to get the cart service make a few more rounds on the hotter days - glad you enjoyed your round!
A classic
We hadn't played Shaker Run for about 10 years, and returning reminded me why it is a classic course in the Cincinnati area. Great layout, plenty of challenge without being ridiculously long like some courses. Nice people. Great rate. You will use every club in your bag, as Shaker keeps you thinking and learning. Can't wait to play it again.
Awesome! We're so glad you enjoyed Shaker Run as you had before. Come back and see us again real soon!
disappointed
For a course that charges premium money I was disappointed in the conditions on the course The fairways were chopped up and not repaired, there were many bare spots on the fairways. The greens were in fair shape.
We'll let our staff and crew know and ensure the conditions are better for your next round with us. See you again soon!
Woodlands to Meadows
Woodlands was in nice shape. Greens were long and slower than prior times here. Meadows holes 4 thru 9 were kind of rough.
Thanks for playing at Shaker Run we're happy you came out for a round and enjoyed the Woodlands course. We can't wait to see you.
Great! So glad you'd play again we're happy to hear you had a good round despite the housing around the course.
