The Club at Shannondell
About
The Club at Shannondell, formerly known as George Washington Golf Course, has been ranked by Golf Digest as one of the "25 Best Golf Courses in Pennsylvania" and it's also on their list of "Best Places to Play." From the back tees, the course is just over 6,100 yards. Put away your driver because there won't be many chances to grip it and rip it on this course. It's a seemingly mild layout with wide, gently rolling fairways that appear forgiving, but the strategically placed hazards along the pitched greens demand well placed shots. The cut of the rough is also higher and there are several doglegs, placing even further emphasis on accuracy. Proper club selection is also very important on this golf course. The Club at Shannondell is a fun but fair test for players of all skill levels.

Pack your patience and wear a helmet
5 hour round at 8:30 am on a Sunday morning -- need I say more??? I'm a decent golfer and I honestly can't recommend this course to anyone with more than a 15 handicap. Beginners should play else where. This course really needs some TLC (tee boxes and fairway bunkers in particular). The place was crowded because of the price but I'd rather spend another $5..
Can do better, can do worse
Played here for work, so the price was right...free. All in all, the conditions were good given the heat and lack of rain we've had recently. Kudos to the grounds crew for that. One tee box was a mess but most greens rolled nicely and consistently. The bunkers looked terrible, but luckily most are avoidable. The one I was in was like gravel.
The layout, like other reviews mention, is kinda redundant. Dogleg after dogleg. But we had some fun cutting the corners and working the ball more than usually necessary. It's way too short, even from the blues. Not much of a challenge.
All in all, I didn't hate it. But I wouldn't rush back either. The shape of the course made it bearable but it's just a little too easy and boring. Great for old man golf.
Great Value
This course is one of my favorites, maybe because it is only 5 minutes from my house. Very well maintained for the money. Because of how close it is to me, I typically play twilight and I rarely even see another group. The people i have run into are always very friendly or helpful. Very laid back environment. I find the course to be pretty easy and good for those just learning who do not hit long shots. Bar/Restaurant are excellent
Well maintained course
Great course for the money only problem is I had to walk the course do to heavy rains
Terrible Experience
First time to play this course. Our foursome goes into clubhouse and pays $40 each with cart. After paying the employee at the counter tells us that the course is cart path only. Should have disclosed that up front on a day with temps in the 90's.(not sure why this would be since it has not rained recently). We found out quickly why cart path only. They have the course practically flooded with water evidently due to the heat. Most all of the sandtraps were half full of water (no rain recently), approaches so wet when you stepped water squished out. Balls would hit the greens and plug. I realize weather has been hot lately but courses down south don't even play this wet. Crabgrass on every tee box and most fairways. We liked the course and its layout however the conditions were absolutely terrible for no reason other than course mis-management. We will not be back here. Not worth $40 at all.
Friendliness
Staff of on course marshals are very friendly and helpful with some fore caddying at some of the popular errant shot locations for holes going opposite directions.
Good bargin/tricky course
The course is in very good condition. The greens could be a little faster and I would say that this is the best bargain in the Philly area. The course isn't very long, but then the # of dog legged holes forces you to think your way around this course instead of bombing it off of every tee box. The 17th needs to be re-thought. You should always be able to hit a driver off of a tee box on a par 5.
Good course
Its a short course with a lot of dog legs. Course was in nice shape for being the middle of summer and Chadwicks is nice too. Good course for price.
Tuesday GolfNow
Pro Shop attendant was awful. No greeting and didn't look my father or I in the eye once. Started on #10, no problem. Make it thru the first 9 in hour and a half, they let a 7some of 70 year olds out on #1 as we make the turn. No prodding or talk from a ranger until #7 (Our 16th hole of the day). Some bunkers were maintained, others not even touched in weeks. Tee boxes were iffy at best. Some fairways were nice. Par 3's were nice. Doglegs all over the place. Trees over hanging and overgrown all over the property. Cart paths were mostly unpaved and bumpy. Clubhouse, pool and restaurant were immaculate and beautiful. Golf course looks like they could care less. Would only come back for the price ($20). Anything more than that is a waste of money.
Dogleggers Delight
If you like doglegs, this is the place for you. Virtually every par-4 and 5 turned, sometimes a full 90 degrees, and often with tall trees guarding the corners.
(I was almost expecting the par-3s to bend!)
Still, a decent and challenging layout.
I’d give it a strong 3.5 stars out of five.
Course in good condition (although some fairway bunkers appeared to be primarily dirt/hard pan).
Not easy. I think the 121 slope (blue tees, just under 6,000 yards) may be slightly understated.
I’d play it again for under $30.
Excellent course for a challenge
I'm usually a once per week golfer, and having played here a few times I can say it is definitely a challenging one. The course conditions were excellent with greens reading true and having consistent speed from hole to hole. Some bunkers were a bit muddy from rain a few days prior, but most appeared to be in good shape. This course will make you go through most clubs in your bag at least once, and that's something I personally appreciate in the layout. Be wary that there is no snack or drink cart driving around, but there are plenty of water coolers that are always full.
Thoroughly Impressed
I've played this course a few times previously but my recent round was a pure joy. Although the course is a public facility it was near private course conditions. The teeboxes were even and manicured. The fairways were plush a the rough was a bit high but not overly punishing. The traps were a bit wet because of the overnight rain but manageable. The greens were consistent and smooth. Overall out of a 10 I'd have to give this course an easy 9, really.
Mis-managed Tee Times
Played a 6 hour round behind a bunch of groups who played very poorly. Started 15 mins late on top of that's.
Freindly Staffs, but was very slow play
Play there before, always enjoy it. Course is not that long, but a lot of dog legs. Staff in club house and the starter was nice and friendly, but it took us over 5 hours to play 18 holes. The course condition was not bad, but the greens were very inconsistent. Some were very fast while others were super slow. Over all, not bad for the money.
No walking on weekends :(
I have been playing the course for several years, always enjoyed walking on early weekend days. However, I was just informed that there will no longer be a walking rate and that whether you walk or ride , the rate is the riding rate. Excellent for walking at $35 but to pay $49 to walk (same as riding), not worth it. I will no longer play here on weekends. Kind of sad that local courses do not charge a lower rate for walking...There should be encouragement to enjoy the game as it should be played....walking.
Last Round Of The Year - Last Round Here.
I have wanted to play at Shannondel for a good while. It has been 45 years since I last played the course ( General Washington CC at the time). The course bares little resemblance to the original layout and there are a couple of pretty 'hinky' holes they have made out of what used to be some good holes.
Overall the course is in good shape and features a rather nice clubhouse facility now - much better than the original. I wish I could say I would go back and give it another try but I found it rather boring compared to the old layout.
I will admit I was trying to relive old memories but it just didn't match up to what I felt about the layout in the past.
For a hot deal and close to philly its an option
This golf course is conveniently close to Philly and good for a hot deal. The regular rates would make this course not the best deal. The layout is kind of boring, each hole looks like the other. Some of the tee boxes and fairways are so close together it makes for a bit of confusion. It was my first time playing the course, and for me it was probably a once and done unless there is another good hotdeal and its convenient location. The course staff was very friendly and accommodating. The course was also well manicured and in great shape for a late November round. Greens were smooth and responsive. Overall a quality golf course but lacking some character.
Good local course for a hot deal
Most of the holes are very nice. A few on the back look like they were stuffed in there to make 18. Hole layout is not well defined on a few holes. Overall, it's a nice course for a hot deal.
Pace of play
This course is not bad for the hot deal pricing but PACE of PLAY was just so slow over booked I would say!!!
