Staff isn't very friendly
Booked a 6:38am tee time showed up at about 6:15 and was told multiple times very sternly that we would not be able to head out early even though other staffers had no problem with us playing early. Staff member was under the impression we would run into an outing that was starting on hole 12 but there's no way we would have. Ended up having 2 groups behind us waiting to play because they were allowed to start early and we're directly behind us at each hole. He was rude and unprofessional to us. Will not be playing at this course again.
Poorly Managed
I decided to give Butler's another chance after a miserable first experience there. (I walked off the Lakeside course after 8 holes because we were on pace for a 3-hour front 9 my first trip). I played the Woodside course this time and had the exact same experience. I walked off after the 9th hole because I was at the 3-hour mark waiting to hit. I would have left after hole 4 but didn’t want to disrupt others driving back. At the opening tee box, there were 4 groups waiting just to start it was so backed up. If you're going to have tee times 6 minutes apart at least have a ranger on the course to speed up the pace of play. My guess is they know the pace is going to be poor and just avoid the chaos all together after they get your money. The course looked like it hasn’t been mowed in quite some time, almost like they have given up on it for the season. Bunkers were either a small lake or a rock pit, simply unplayable. None of the greens had the same feel at all. The tee boxes were the most concerning, it was like hitting in short rough if you wanted to use anything besides a driver. It was sad because the layout seemed like a course I would have enjoyed. I’m very disappointed I gave this course another chance and wish I paid $10 more to go anywhere else. Unless you’re playing with a 4 some who doesn’t mind a 6-hour round I would highly suggest avoiding this place. This is the first course I’ve ever been critical with, but it’s obvious they are just about the $ and could care less about your experience.

BogieGolf90 - We regret you endured this experience. Our guess is this review is based on an round on Sunday, 7/30. Unusual weather the previous two days with over 4 inches of recorded rainfall caused 2 courses near us to close for the day, one of which had 36 holes. Their closure led to a very high influx of customers. Although our intervals are 8 minutes apart, managing pace of play with such a high volume of players on a wet golf course is extremely difficult, particularly when you don't expect that much play. The heavy rains prevent some regular course maintenance and result in conditions that may not meet your expectations. We would like to speak more specifically about your experience if you're open to it. Feel free to call Joe, the GM, at 412-751-9121 and reference this review.
Nice courses to play
Sand traps need improvement and maintenance is needed as well on cart paths.
Lakeside Course
Front nine and back nine are drastically different but I enjoyed the different layouts a lot. The front is basically straightforward but the back requires some interesting shot choices. Will play here again for sure!
Wow
Course was awesome, great pace, bunkers needed fixed, heard cars on one hole, and heard kids playing on another, had the worst waitresss in my life at the dinner. Seriously my dog would have done a better job. Besides those 4 things I had a blast. Best course I have ever played around this area. Didn't hear any cars motorcycles. You are out there when you are playing. If it wasn't for the bunkers and the stupid girl I would give 5/5
Poor pace of play.
I have golfed this course 10-20 times per year over the last 5 years. It used to be my go to course. Unfortunately, the course conditions and pace of play have regressed to the point that I can no longer risk playing this course. In general, the high percentage of senior players have demonstrated a complete disregard for the pace of play and course conditions. Typical offenses include tearing up wet fairways, driving carts onto the edge of the green, scraping cleats across the green, leaving ball marks un-repaired, and re-marking tap-in putts. Since I no longer see rangers patrolling the fairways, I can only assume the management is willing to look the other way as long as the receipts keep coming in. Finally, I hear the management plans on rebuilding the sand bunkers. I should hope so. I don't think they have had a legitimate bunker in two years.
Sometimes you don't get what you pay for.
Poorest conditions I've ever seen at this course. Should be a discount based on the condition of the bunkers alone. They're literally unplayable. Used to be one of my favorite courses. I hope the growing season and course improvement comments I've seen come to fruition. If not, you can find nicer venues at a cheaper rate.
Glenn

Glenn, thank you for the feedback. We're sorry you didn't have the experience you expect from Butler's but wanted you to know how your concerns are being addressed. We just had enough sand delivered to add 2 tons to each greenside bunker on both courses. Bunker edging and cleanup will begin along with the addition of sand next week. This is an extensive process that will take the better part of a month to complete, but we're confident playability will improve to meet our standards soon.
Wet but a good value
Because the course does not have complete cart paths we were surprised we were able to play. The course was very wet and easily damaged by carts if you were not careful. We were pleased by the condition of the greens & enjoyed our round.
Butler wood side course
The course was in pretty good conditions for late March . The pace was good not to the point where you are being rushed . Had a good day playing their will go back!

Thanks for the review and glad you had a good time! April will be a big month in terms of course maintenance and getting it prepared for even better conditions this summer. We look forward to seeing you soon!
Way down hill from even 2 years ago
I used to buy the birdie pass and twilight practice and play pass from this course every year. I got a good deal on Golfnow...my buddy who wanted to join us was told he would have to pay $45. March 1st they started with summer rates? Uh...whatever the case. The greens weren't rolled nor trimmed, the fairways were destroyed for the most part. For the number to local public courses that cost far less I will likely not return unless I get a hot deal and pay next to nothing. It was 53 degrees and they were charging full rates and acted like we were crazy trying to buy a hot dog on the turn. See ya, Butler's.

Thank you for your review. We’re sorry you had a poor experience during your last visit. High temperatures and traffic during February certainly had an impact on the course but we’re confident the growing season and additionally allocated resources will improve course conditions quickly. We did switch to spring rates on March 1st and are offering significant discounts to those who purchase the birdie pass for the season. Cards are still only $19 or $15 for seniors. Unfortunately you caught us on a Monday before the restaurant is back to a 7 day operation beginning April 1st. We do have great plans for the 2017 season and hope you give us another opportunity in the near future
Early
Greens were very slow as was pace of play! Would not play on weekend or any busy day. Everyone must of took off work Friday! Played in the past and really like both courses but condition is not great yet. But good for February

David, glad you were able to get out and play in February! We are taking measures this year to improve pace of play on weekends with longer tee time intervals and an enhanced ranger program. We know that conditions will quickly improve as we enter the growing season. See you soon!
Enjoyable Round
Cool day but for this time of the year was nice. Course was in very good shape.

We really appreciate your review, Billy -- always great to hear that players are enjoying the course! We hope you come back and see us again.
This course has good qualities
Very good course for the price

Thanks a lot, JRB, we appreciate your review!
Ouitng
This was our 4 year having an outing at Butlers and the staff were great to work with and very accommodating. I will be booking again next year.

Thanks so much! We're glad you had a great time with us, and we're eager to have you back next year. Thank you for your review!
Worst conditions I've ever seen
This was the worst conditions I've ever played in and they haven't even aerated yet. Not surprised though from a course that jams in as many golfers as they can but obviously don't put that money into maintenance. Starters and rangers also rude as usual
Lakeside
I Will comeback back. Bert Nicke layout!

Thanks for your review, Lasseman! We can't wait to have you back for another round!
good challange
nice course,well maintained,friendly staff,great price easy accsess

Glad you enjoyed it!
u168191944 - My name is Joe and I spoke to you directly before you headed to the tee, notifying you of the outing and no need to worry about their starting position due to the timing of the shotgun. Please allow me to apologize for the direct manner in which my staff member spoke to you. We have had issues in the past with starting groups unnecessarily running into outings. In his eagerness to avoid such a predicament he may have forgotten the importance of his interaction with guests and the effect it has on their experience. We regret this incident may prevent you from returning and hope you would give us another opportunity.
