The Village Course at Waikoloa
About
Nestled between the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes, The Village Course at Waikoloa (formerly known as Waikola Village Golf Club) has a beautiful and unique location that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The verdant, rolling terrain is dotted with stands of young trees and lakes that were incorporated into the golf course’s design. Robert Trent Jones Jr., the course’s designer, tried to maintain the natural assets of the landscape while adding a few challenges such as fairways bunkers and doglegs. The golf course also features traditional raised greens that are subject to forceful prevailing winds. Although the course is challenging enough for the serious golfer, the relaxed pace and beautiful scenery appeal to players of all skill levels. Locals often consider The Village Course at Waikoloa one of Hawaii’s best-kept secrets.

Beautiful condition with open fairways
We liked this course for sure and 39 with golf now was a steal. Definite to play while in Kona.
Windy as h___!
Wind gusts up to 40mph made the course virtually unplayable with so many holes into the wind. When we finished we were advised the course had been closed. Why were we not accorded the same courtesy. Overall a nice track but could not really enjoy the scenery as had to concentrate on the wind. Hats blew off numerous times and ball blown off the tee on at least 5 occasions. Traps need a lot of work...either no loose sand at all or crushed stones which are hard on your clubs. Would consider playing again under the right conditions but would not be my first choice with so many others to choose from.
OK course. good value for $$$$.
WIND!!!
Front 9 was OK.. but wind picked up (easily 30-40 mph) which made the back 9 difficult... nearly impossible.. quit before finishing...
Great track
Good value. The course provided a good variety of challenges but was fair. All skill levels would enjoy this course. The range, chipping green, and putting green we're good. The personnel were friendly, courteous, and very helpful. The restaurant service and food / drink were very good (especially the nachos). Overall, a very good experience- I would play here again.
Great Value
We have been playing this course for many years. It has gotten better probably because the local homeowners are more involved. Can be really too windy and some of the bunkers need to be redone (number two hole, left side bunker is not playable). The vistas are spectacular and really makes the place. The locals are a fun crowd and make you fel welcome.
Slow Play
My one complaint with this course is that they have the tee times too close together - which creates really slow play. We have golfed here twice. The first time - started at 2:15 and didn't get to finish. The second time started at 1:30 and just finished 18 at 6:00. Way too slow. They create groups of 4; but then have only 8 minutes between groups. If you are paired with a less experienced golfer - or the group ahead is inexperienced, it creates a very long game. Groups of 2 may move quicker - but they don't allow that. Beautiful course though!
Fun Track for all levels of play
I played Waikoloa Village Golf Club with my dad and two brother in laws. All 4 of us play at different levels which is why after reading previous reviews we chose to book here. The fairways are very generous and if you do miss them there is plenty of room to spray your tee shot and live to hit another shot. We tee'd it from the whites which was a good challenge for a couple of my group members but would suggest playing blues as it wouldn't be a huge jump with the benefits of modern technology. As other reviews said the bunkers could use some attention, they are sanded with a type of rock, which made me happy that I had rentals to spray out of them. My suggestion is to pave them at least then a guy might get a favorable bounce.
The course as a whole was in great shape and was a lot of fun to play, but if you are looking for a Hawaiian experience I think I would play elsewhere, as the course runs through an Americanized condo village I had felt like I had played this track before in other places I have visited.
Overall we had a lot of fun playing Waikoloa Village Golf Club, we chose it to fit all our levels of play and at the end of the day we shook hands and had some laughs reminiscing wild shots we had hit. Thanks for the play, not everyday I get to tee it in the middle of January!
Great Service!
Best service on the big island so far. Staff were friendly, greeted you at the bag drop, set up the carts, even picked us up after we parked. Greens were in great shape !
Enjoyed the course.
Course was in great shape and very busy which accounted for the slowness of play. Friendly staff; prompt service. Marshall did get play moving along which we appreciated.
Great warm-up Course
this is a great place to start a Hawaii golf vacation, especially if not familiar with bermuda greens and the grain and how it effects putts and chips. The grain is very strong at this course so into the grain quite slow, down grain fast and the grain will pull your put when putting across it. Staff friendly. this is a course with some strong holes and some very easy ones. Recommend it and I will play it again.
Great course for price!
Played course twice in week. Tricky greens but overall conditions were good. Will definitely be back!
course good condition and challenging especially in wind
Wind was like a gale(very difficult to even stand and address ball for most of round) so played very difficult conditions for entire round. would like to play again with much less wind
generic muni's
tough to hit from Kikuyu grass fairways, put on unmowen greens.good designed gc.,fun to play
Great Fun on the Course
We had 3 foursomes and everyone played along briskly in front of us on this lovely island course. Finished in just under 4 hours. Blues are a good challenge for the 1-10 handicapper and whites challenge on the par threes (160-190 yards), but give you enough opportunities for birdie and par to make it fun.
A pleasant surprise and good value
After several trips to the Big Island I finally played the Waikoloa Village GC. The conditions were as good or better than the Waikoloa Resort Beach Course but at a much better price. It was a great layout with beautiful view overlooking the ocean-front resorts on almost every hole. It will definitely be a regular course in the rotation for future trips.
Great all round golfing experience.
This course is a treat to play with a great variety of holes. Wind can make it a real challenge but fun to play with as many wind directions through out the layout. I have played numerous rounds and never bored.
This course has some great views.
The sand traps for the most part are very gravelly and difficult to consistently get out of with any precision.
Good value, nice views
Played here several times. Course is in good condition. For women the course is challenging because of length. Not a lot of trouble otherwise. Not as pristine as some of the other courses closer to the beach, but then again, the price differential is quite substantial.
Fair test of golf.
Easy course. Wide fairways with limited rough. Good way to get the rust off your game before taking on some of the more difficult courses on the Island.
Nice views. Good variety of holes.
Good value and nice relaxed place.
This was the second time we played in three days. Great value using GolfNow. Course is well maintained and staff is very pleasant. Cart girl liked to hang out under the trees and you needed to search her out--different than the prior day we played. Course can be windy, but that's Hawaii golf. Just add a couple of clubs and you'll have no real issues. Fun track!
