Island green on 17 Photo submitted by drksmith on 11/07/2012
We did have a good day but....
First of all, the staff was very friendly, courteous, and welcoming.
My issue was the course preparation. It was obvious that the sand traps had not been groomed for quite some time. I get no rake because of covid, but there's no excuse for allowing debris to accumulate in the traps.
The course needs some TLC in the maintenance and preparation.
Great layout
Good condition, too bad the 18th hole is to a temporary green due to renovation of the pond. Fun course to play.
Big Island, Makani country club
Very pretty course. A combination of both tight and open golf, Fairways are a bit on the thin side, Greens are decent, Yardage markers could be better, The course is in better shape than it was a year age, Would play again because of the layout. Five sets of tees.
Bad check in experience
We've been to this golf course many many times over the past several years. We come to this island a few times a year and always golf there. We have NEVER been told we can't wear a tank top or shorts or anything like that. We know it's on the website but it's never been enforced that we've ever been aware of.
Today we drive an hour to get there only to be told we have to have a collared shirt. They suggested we pay over $100 for two shirts or drive back to our condo and change. Really? A 55 min drive for a collared shirt? The golf course is in ranch country. The only one seeing our shirts would be geese, ducks, goats, chickens, etc. Good grief.
We understand a dress code but we were dressed nicely, just not collared. We've been there SO many times and they have never commented on our attire. So one gal decides today that she wants to enforce a dress code. Why not just say that for today since we drove so far, they let is slide but that we should be sure to dress with a collared top next time. But no, she wouldn't help out in that way.
We were very angry and drove back and changed and got back two hours later because we had a nonrefundable gift card and had to golf or lose out. It was very disappointing and we'll probably not return to this golf course again.
It's also worth noting that it was a very slow day there and we never even came close to any other golfers and they wouldn't have known or cared if our shirt had a collar. It was ridiculous and unnecessary. Never again.
Good test of golf, outstanding finishing holes, wildlife, no houses nearby!
We thoroughly enjoyed our recent three rounds at Makani. Well, one of the rounds was in such fog that we never saw the course much at all so we played it 2x more and it's a gem of a course.
The land surrounding the course is beautiful and the course is carved out of it. Bonus is seeing wild turkeys, goats, birds of prey and a kind of wild feeling throughout though the course is well maintained throughout. I have a lower handicap, played off the "champion" markers and found it moderately challenging with the last two holes being exceptionally challenging. Staff is very very nice.
Upcountry Gem
Return trip when visiting the Big Island. Always a treat, always a bit cooler and the friendly staff makes for a welcome addition to the experience. Limited post-round options but always return for our time in Hawaii. Encourage you to do the same.
Great Find
What a great Course!! The Staff were friendly and Helpful. The course itself was very well maintained and offered challenges on several holes - especially number 17!! I made another tee time as soon as I finished the round.
The only downfall was the club l house is actually a tent like structure. You can get a caned or bottled beverage from the cooler - but that's about it. There was no cart service the day I played - But normally there is.
Fun layout with challenging greens
Played for a 2nd time today and enjoyed it more than a week ago. Interesting layout and never did figure out the breaks on the greens..... In good shape and cooler temos than beachside courses.
Great course but...
The cost was worth it. However, the pace of play was very slow. I think it was over booked.
Nice track; not special
First time playing here. Course was in decent shape. Layout was interesting, greens were challenging. Couple holes had distant views of the coast....nice. No restaurant or bar...... On-course snacks very limited.
Great experience
Very nice course. Friendly and helpful staff. I can only recommend!
Very disappointing
Course in mediocre condition. most of the staff on course showed no respect towards players; not turning down the engines when players are in proximity or stop working. Not true for all, but these are mostly exceptions. No distance markers on most holes. Confusing clots and markers at tee off for different skill levels. Worst was the pro shop, insisting that my shirt was not good enough and forced me to buy one of the overpriced ones they sell. Were not able and willing to refund the prepaid round. I run into exactly one other player, so the dress code enforcement was crucial. Good that there are much nicer courses on the island
RIDER FEE!
First off, why do you charge a rider fee if no extra cart is needed? As a single player when I want my father to come watch, $30 fee to use a cart that i would already be using. I was a single player grouped with no one. I would have an extra seat right next to me. Stupid! Course great layout. Condition was poor, especially for this environment. I would not suggest you go here.
Great golf on the big island
Makani (big island) is awesome ......wild life and an island green......fun elevation changes >.<
