Makani Golf Club

The course is very dry. The conditions are ok but not great. For $71 on a Golf Pass Hot Deal it was worth it. But for full price definitely not. The lakes need to be filled as black plastic on 18 showing ruins the look of an otherwise good hole. The greens are ok but very slow, probably to save them from the heat. No amenities either in the makeshift clubhouse or on the course. Just a refrigerator in the clubhouse trailer with a few drinks and sandwiches of unknown date. Could be a fun course if some money were invested in it.

This golf experience has VALUE written all over it. We got a great deal on GolfNow, especially compared to typical Hawaii greens fees. The course design by Perry Dye is absolutely wonderful. It probably made his father proud. Generous landing zones off the tees and lots of elevation changes to present sight line challenges. Enough course design variance that you don’t feel you played this hole 45 minutes earlier. The fairways and greens were in very nice condition. Personnel were friendly, both in the clubhouse and Joel the starter are welcoming and helpful.

Improvements could be made on the condition of the tee boxes and the sand traps. The practice area needs some focus. Bring plenty of hydration because we did not see a refreshment cart and no water stations after we left the first tee with four bottles of water in our cartridge cooler.

This is an inland mountain course tucked in between Kona and Hilo side on the Big Island of Hawaii…nice course layout but some spots felt tight…great course for the price! 17th island hole is really nice!! Other courses charge for the ocean view rather than course play and challenge!

I enjoyed playing this course on the Big Island. Everytime I come to this island, I’ll be playing a round of golf at this course for sure.

The island green was a bit disappointing. I had hoped it would have been better maintained.

Compared to the other island courses Malani is the best bang for the buck. Course layout is good with elevation changes and undulations. Bunkers could be in better condition as there is tufts of grass growing in them. As well there are areas around greens and fairways (rough) that have seriously penalizing foliage growth that is easy to lose a ball in and slows the pace of play. Having said that the course is fun to play and as I said good value for your money.

Beautiful course with challenging layout. Course was building a new clubhouse so little amenities available when I was there. Golf Now price was $125 on a Monday morning which isn’t great but compared to some other courses it made sense. I would play there again.

Greens were punched around April14. Almost healed now. Rough is very thick in most areas. Stay out to score well . The clubhouse ( tent) was wiped out a month ago and being rebuilt as the same canvas roof. Not sure why a more permanent structure is being built because tent structures had been blown apart in the past here. They are making do with a trailer. Staff are very friendly and helpful. They do a great job keeping nene (there are many geese here) droppings off of the course.Wonder how they do it?

We had such a great golf day today! Had planned on another course for Thursday....changed our minds. Going back to Makani. The course is BEAUTIFUL and the staff is so nice!!!! Can't wait for the Clubhouse to be finished. Will definitely be shopping when it does!

It's less of a drive then you think and worth the time and effort. Staff was helpful and great from the get go. Range is close, although chipping and putting green is closer to hole #1. Course is recovering from drought conditions, but you wouldn't be able to tell. Fairways were green, rough was thick and greens ran true. Sand in the bunkers has been some of the best I've seen. Not too much swag in the pro shop, but drinks and beers are available. Sandwich, coke and Gatorade for $10. Worth the money and the views are excellent.

We have played this course several times over the last three years. Right now it’s probably in the toughest shape. We’ve played it. The greens were punched a little over two weeks ago, but are still pretty slow and bumpy. The punched holes are still not healed over yet and probably won’t be for another two weeks.

The rough is very thick if you go in it’s hard to find your ball sometimes and they don’t appear to be mowing the rough in many areas often.. The fairways typically carry much further too so the rain from a few weeks ago is still impacting play.

The clubhouse was decimated by the recent storms and now in a small trailer is set up to check in. They do have some Golf supplies in the trailer.

Really not worth playing this course unless you get a good deal under $80. But will be worth it in a month from now.

We have played here a lot - the layout is great - they are in the process of rebuilding a club house - staff was great - greens had recently plugged and sand all over them - sand traps have not been touched

poor maintenance, rough hadnt been cut for a week, could be a beautiful course, too bad there is a lack of maintenance.

Even though the greens were sanded and the fairways just punched it was still a challenge and playable. It has been so much improved over the years. Great golf course!
