The course is a great bang for your buck!
Even during a drought the course was in great shape. Everytime I golf here the course gets nicer! Friendly staff.
Best Bargain in Poconos
Beautiful scenic, classic layout - you don't mind playing this 9 hole course twice to get in your 18. Greens were in excellent condition on every hole - not a brown blade or dead spot to be found. Staff was courteous and friendly, course was not crowded and although closed, the views of the inn on the front few holes let your mind wander to what once was probably a nice mountain retreat.
Great potential
I have been playing on this course for the last couple of months. It was recently reopened and the new owners are making a real go of it. The course has improved signicantly since earlier this summer and it has a lot of potential. For $20 to play 9 with a cart or $25 to play 9 twice with a cart, you can't beat the value. Soem of the holes are challenging, especially the long par 5s. Could use some more sand traps (none) and water hazards (one) though to really improve the challenge.
great course
9 hole course that is very family friendly. The staff is top notch. Always enjoy the round when we play here.
good course
Green were beautiful. Fairways weren't too great but can't complain for 10 dollars for 18 holes on a Saturday! Definitely nice 9hole course
good coarse
need some rain hard to reopen with no rain would play here again good coarse
Best 9 hole for the money
The last review incorrectly gives only part of the story. The course was just recently reopened after being closed for at least 2 years. Joe who was the pro at port jervis took over the course late last year and has done a wonderful job trying to restore the course on a shoestring budget. It will take some more time and care to bring it fully back. The reason for the porta potty is that the beautiful cliff park inn was ruined by hurricane sandy and the inn was condemned and closed by the national park service.
Therefore no running water for bathrooms or food service. The fee is only $15 to walk the course and is great exercise . This includes weekends as well. The greens are in great shape. The course has been there since the early 1900's and was the first one to allow women to play. It's challenging even without water or sand traps. The reason for no traps is park service requirements but that may change in the future. The area is part of the national park so there is no development and it looks beautiful .
Play the course for the history/experience alone!
no better value for the money - a true test of golf and course management using every club in your bag - this is the first golf course designed by a women in the US and it's 9 holes, you'll look forward to playing the 9 again for a round of 18 (over and over...) - from the men's tees expect par 3's up to 197 yards and par 5's up to 549 yards - the greens roll true and reading putts is "what you see is what you get" breaks and all - enjoy environmentally friendly areas retaining the natural beauty of the landscape - "parfectly" 35 strokes from the white tees and 36 strokes from the red ones - enjoy . . .
Don't waste your time!
Hadn't played this course for several years. Waited until a year or two after is was reopened. The course was in terrible shape! The tee boxes were overgrown/ not maintained. Couldn't tell where the fairway ended and the rough began. Will admit the green rolled true. After the first nine, we saw a foursome with only two sets of clubs on the first tee. Not good. We decided to jump ahead to find some open holes in order to get out of there as soon as possible. Even at the cost of $25, it was not worth it. Also, no bathroom...just a porta john.
Course has great potential
Had a 7:00 am Tee time and employee was 15-20 minutes late. However Golf Pro Joe showed up as we were on the 3rd hole, apologized for the lateness and thanked us for playing there. That went a long way with the four in our group. Course has a lot of potential, greens were fantastic. Already booked a Tee time for the following Sunday.
Excelent Service Saved My Day
The greens are quite nice for a public course. They are rolling at a 9 on the stimp meter, and are receptive.
The main reason for the review is the headache the staff saved me. When leaving the course, I became distracted by a business call, and somehow forgot to load my clubs in my car. A few minutes after I drove off, they tracked me down, and got my clubs back to me saving me a major headache.
Great Value, will improve
The course was not in great shape. It is a 9 hole course that you play through twice. It is semi difficult. The fairways are full of bumps and runoff from the mountain. It was a lot of fun. The facility is going to be improved and hopefully the course will be as well. I am excited to go back and see it after the $4,000,000 renovations are finished.
Supprised, links in the mountains
This golf course was closed for a few years until last Sept. when a new owner took over, The staff was very friendly, no real clubhouse but a starters shed and a hot dog cart and a row of well keep golf carts. The course is built on top of a mountain so there are uphill, downhill and side hill lies. It is a links style with plenty of tall grasses and wet areas. Second hole is a monster par 4 at 475 yds. the two par 5's are blind tee shots both over 500 yds. The greens were very well maintained, the fairway showed some weeds in spots and the tee boxes in the shade needed some filling in, but when you're done playing and ask yourself and your playing partner would you play here again the answer was a big YES. If you are looking for old school no frills golf this is you're place. Where else do you finish playing and the owner thanks you for playing today?
Large improvement
Seeing the course back open after a few years of being closed is great and in addition the course is in excellent condition. The staff is continuously working to make improvements on the course, bringing it back better and better as they go. The rates are the lowest in the area but the course still offers a quality round of golf. It's a nice relaxed course that's perfect for going out with a few friends and having a good time.
good practice
still developing under new ownership enjoyed the round as practice. tee boxes and fairways need work price is right and very friendly staff.
Cow Pasture
I used to play this course often when I was in school it is my home course where I learned the game. It was always in pretty bad condition but the prices were okay and it was very close to me. After being closed for around 2 years, it recently reopened under a new owner. I figured since they had bought all new equipment, the course conditions may have improved. To my surprise the greens fees are double what they used to be with no work to justify it. The course is in just as bad condition as ever, and you would be better off playing another local course for around the same price. I really would like to see improvements made to this course as it has potential and would be a nice local course if it was maintained better.
