One of Jim Fazio’s first solo projects, Riverchase is a surprisingly tough challenge given its lack of trees and relatively short length. The course runs through the bottomlands of the Elm Fork Trinity River and is loaded with water due to a chain of interconnecting lakes created to collect heavy rains and irrigate the course. While there are no forced carries, water comes into play at least 12 holes, and out-of-bounds is a frequent concern because of the housing community that surrounds the course.

No. 5 is the most difficult rated hole–a long dogleg right par 4 that requires a solid tee shot to be in position to reach the green in two. The approach is long and uphill into a severely back-to-front sloping green with a lake on the right and out-of-bounds and bunkers on the left.

Two holes later, No. 7 is one of the toughest approaches in all of DFW. This hole plays due south into the prevailing wind, and the elevated green has a depth of only about 25 feet. Bunkers line the back, and the slope in front is significant. Ups and downs are difficult because of the slopes in the green. Take a look at the pin placement when you’re teeing off on No. 4.

The good news is that other than out-of-bounds, the course is mostly wide open, so you’ll generally have a shot if you just miss the fairway. The only thick spot for trees is along the creek on holes 14-16.

Getting there : Take the Belt Line exit off of 635 and drive north to MacArthur. Turn right (east) and drive to Riverchase Dr., where you’ll turn left. Look for the course on the right side of the road.

Needs some work

Over the years the course has moved downhill, after reading the reviews I was hoping they were incorrect, unfortunately not, bunkers are horrible (baked mud) fairways are very patchy and in not the best condition for the time of year, tee boxes are bare and dirt ridden, greens were the only light if any, unfortunately will not be back

Riverchase

The weather was great in the low 70's. we had quite a bit of rain earlier in the week so places were still wet in spots. There were places on the course where there was no grass, so hitting off of dirt makes shots more difficult, or you just had to move the ball where you could hit off some turf.

The greens were in good shape, but the sand traps ere too packed to effectively hit out of.

The value for the money was about as good as it gets in the Dallas area, which is why I chose to play it.

Course needs help

Decent layout but they need to put some money into the tee boxes, fairways and especially the cart paths.

Typically Bad Ownership

This used to be a decent muni. Now, somehow the fairways are rock hard and full of weeds, or waterlogged and full of puddle – at the same time. It is 100% evident that if the course owners are spending any money at all on the course, they are spending the bare minimum to keep the course open. The cart paths are not only cracked but have 5-6 inch gaps in them or 5-6 inch jagged edge from soil erosion. Weeds are more common than grass.

The only redeeming feature of this course is that it allows beginners a place to paly without worrying about other golfers. This is a double-edged sword for the beginner because their good shots can end up in bad places because , for example, their isn’t enough grass in the fairway to stop a ball from rolling 40 yards into the water.

If you are looking for a place to take a beginner golfer, this place is decent. The pro shop and staff were very friendly and helpful – unfortunately they are not getting ay help from course ownership.

Course Conditions

Was very disappointed. Course is in very poor condition. Tee boxes awful, fairways have so many dirt patches, and ditches everywhere. Sand bunkers have no sand at all, only hard dirt with water. I thought I was playing in a pasture. I honestly won’t go there again. On a positive note the staff did a good job. This course needs a lot of love…

Course rating explained

Friendly staff, clubhouse, range, and amenities are fine. Course is not very well kept. Fairways have mounds, looks like from the geese, and the grass is in bad shape. Lots of dirt patches in fairway and of course where rough grass is supposed to be. Cart paths concrete all broken up. It’s a rough ride in cart on paths and on the course. Hate to be harsh but I used to play this course many years ago and seems that it has been let go. Very nice older homes around it so too bad. The layout is good, just needs a lot of maintenance to get back in playing shape.

Improving…

I have been playing this course for several years now and it has had its ups and downs. It appears to be heading in the up direction again. The greens were soft and grttable and in better shape than other courses around for similar price point. They have fully turned over their cart fleet which is a big improvement and have made some upgrades to their water management systems. The fairways were not great but coming along. The “rough” was dry hard and terribly inconsistent. All in all it was a pleasant round and finished in 3hrs and 45mins which considering we were playing behind several full groups is really not bad at all. We waited several times, but it was not obnoxiously slow. I look forward to playing here again before the weather gets too ridiculously hot!

The WORST condition golf course I have ever played...

This is by far the worst golf course I've played in my life.. To compare this course to a cow pasture will be an insult to the cow pasture. You're either in the mud or hard pan. They should post a warning when you pull up as to how bad of shape this course is in, they really should be embarrassed by how they maintain it. The greens weren't terrible but they have moved the hole so many times you will be putting over an old hole location no matter where your ball is. The cart paths are in total disrepair and the fairways are full of holes. You will not get any roll due to the mud as they have watered it to the point there is mud holes everywhere and where it is dry it is hardpan. They do warn you that they don't have any water cans on the course but they also don't have any ball washers, so carry an extra towel with you to clean off the mud off of your ball. If I owned a home on this course I would be furious as it is dragging down the values. They advertise their course as being : "one of the cities best kept secrets." ...This is total garbage.

I cannot warn you enough DO NOT PLAY HERE! You will be disappointed.
