The Battleground at Deer Park
About
Created as a tribute to Texas' battle for independence, The Battleground is more of a links-style course that is burdened by the wind and tricky because of the abundance of water (14 holes). Despite its links flavor, the fairways are narrow, and they're lined by thick rough.
Providing sort of a golf experience/history lesson combined into one day, each hole is named after some significant person, item, or event in the Texas fight for independence. For example, one hole is named Sam Houston, while another is named after a pair of twin cannons: Twin Sisters.
No. 8 is one of the signature holes, a 175-yard poke over the water to a green that is shared with the par 5 No. 1. A waterfall accents the edge of the lake, providing a unique aesthetic.
On the back, the finishing hole is fun because you can play aggressively off the tee, free of major hazards in the landing area that is framed by mounding. The approach must carry water, and you'll need to take an extra club because the green is elevated.
Getting there : From Houston, take Hwy. 610 and loop around the city to Hwy. 225 east. Take the first Deer Park exit and turn right onto Georgia St. Next, drive 1 mile to the course, and look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

Battleground A Course Worth Playing
I very much enjoyed my first round at Battleground. The challenges lie in your ability to drive the ball straight off the tee to avoid water and trees that line most of the tight fairways. The other challenge is your ability to carry water hazards that project some of the fairway landing zones and the front and sides of the greens. The only negative were the greens. The transition from the cold winter has left them in fair condition at best.
nice track
If the greens were in better shape and the waterfalls were flowing it would be worth 5 stars. That was the only disappointment. Other than that I would definitely return.
Had a fun round of golf
Course was in good shape. Greens still recovering from the winter freezes. Course has enough water to make it challenging. Great place to enjoy some golf with friends.
What happened to the greens
Fairways were great but the greens were horrible. I've there before and this is the first time the greens were in bad shape. The price was great!
greens need work
pace of play was pretty slow. No starter or Marshall evident. The course was in good shape except for the greens. All of the greens had some damage. Made for a tough putting day.
first time
First time to play Battleground and it was enjoyable. Apparently one of the crew had put Roundup on the course resulting in the killing of grass throughout. The course is on the mend with fairways in good shape, tee boxes mostly good but greens still need a little time and water. Overall a good course. Will play again.
Pace of play excruciatingly slow
Took me five hours to complete 18 holes yesterday, and only because I did the front nine twice. Would have been longer if I hadn't. They had this course waaaay overbooked. Other than that, I like the Battleground, and the price is fair. Challenging water hazards that can not be seen from the tee on four separate holes in particular. I'll be back.
Nice layout
Challenging at times and easy on some holes with a nice drive. Greens are very fast sneaky undulation also a nice tree lined course.
Poor condition, not worth it
The entire course was mud or dirt with grass in between. Very disappointing and not what I remembered.
Good price and scenic holes.
This course had good tee boxes and fairways with several nice views. However, many of the holes had greens that were worn down or bad spots where the grass had died. The club house staff was very friendly and courteous. For the value(we were given the twilight rate, even though the GolfNow rate was higher) this course was acceptable to our standards.
First Time at The Battleground
I liked the layout a lot. The fairways were in good shape. The greens played better than they looked and were rather fast. Lots of water to contend with.
Rumors of good conditions untrue
Course design is very good with lots of water and well placed bunkers. However, the fairways were spotty, at best and the greens weren't even spotty. They looked like they've been overtaken by fungus and did not hold or roll true.
I'd heard a lot of talk about great conditions there, but it must have been from before when we used to get rain around here.
My wife and I paid almost $100 to play on Easter Sunday and it just wasn't worth it. I will come back and play when conditions improve, but not until then and not for a full fee.
Too dry
The course is very dry. No grass in the fairways or greens. It really could be a great course. It was worth the $33 price from Golf Now but I no more than that.
horrible shape
Greens were horrible, they don't hold shots, they putt fair you just can't get a approach shot to stay. Still a bunch of bare spots grass wise especially on the back. And a 5+ hour round even when teeing off at 820. Shame because it's a nice lay out.
Don't bother playing this one
The fairways and around the greens are mostly dirt.
First cart was dead before we got to the number one tee. This was the worst I have ever seen Battleground and it is not even summer. Our group will not play here again.
Nothing Good To Say
This used to be one of the best courses around. Over the years it has slowly deteriorated and now it is just plain garbage. The fairways had little or no grass, the greens were a terrible. They were slow and bumpy. The tee boxes looked like they hadn't been cut in a week. The only good thing I can say is the employees were very nice, unlike the course. I will definitely take my money else where.
JC
I've played this course numerous times over the years. I live in the area. There was little grass in the fairways, it was mostly weeds and needed to be mowed. Way too many greens had bad spots covering a good deal of the surface, with some completely dirt. The course was in the worst condition I have ever seen it. The cart girl only came out when an afternoon tournament started . I won't be back. For my money, I would rather go to Bay Forest, Evergreen Point or Eagle Point.
First time playing Battleground
The course was pretty good and had enough challenge for my first time playing. The course layout was nicely combined with wind direction which made it more challenging for me to decide what clubs to use on certain holes. The greens were in good shape although I like a little faster greens I still had no three putts. If I'm ever back in the area, I'll most definitely play there again!
Bad fairways
I have played battleground many many times. I have always told friends that this is the best golf course for the money. This was the worst conditionj I have seen since I have played the course. The fairways had NO grass. Very slow play and never saw a Marshall. I will play it again and I hope they make some improvements.
