Pine Forest Golf Club
About
Built by Don January in 1979, Pine Forest Golf Club in Bastrop, Texas provides a true golf adventure through sneaky elevation changes and red bluffs, with blind tee shots and holes along the Colorado River. No. 3 is a picturesque par 3, playing 170 yards downhill, with a green framed by the red bluffs. On no. 6, keep the tee shot right to avoid a blind second shot, and watch out for the tough, two-tiered green. The seventh hole plays along the Colorado, and is protected by a massive cottonwood tree on the left. On the back, make note that the highest point on the course is the 11th green. For the home stretch, make the most of the two downhill par 3s. No. 12 plays 180 yards and you'll need to leave it below the hole. The 16th hole is longer at 225 yards and is protected by a beautiful oak tree on the left.

Back 9 is beautiful
Very interesting course.
As the pro shop shared you want to play your approach shots carefully and not be over aggressive or you'll end up chipping from backside (a lot). Every green had lots of slopes and were very small so short game is critical for a good golf score. Some of the par 3's were amazing views looking down from 50 & 60 feet from t box (guess on height).
Staff was very friendly and the area is a great place to visit. My review of the course was based on how hard the ground was and how difficult the blind shots were. I could barely get my Tee's into the ground and the paths to the next holes left me ready to shoot anyone who jumped out of the woods. lol
Several paths took us down dirt roads and be prepared that you hitting right beside the road on a couple holes but the locals would stop to see if you hit it straight or a slice. On one path we came out of the woods and literally rode up on a 6' snake laying across the path.
It was interesting place and as I shared the staff was sincerely great. I'm probably a little spoiled on greener fairways and softer greens. This was my first time to visit the hill country golf course so maybe this is normal playing conditions for the area.
Thanks to the manager at the golf shop for being excellent at customer care! Felt like I was visiting an old friend.
The course that should be great, but the greens don't allow it.
I have played this course off and on for several years. The staff is always great, the lay out is beautiful, but the greens are horrible. They are have been getting worse each and every year and when I played yesterday they were the worst I've ever seen.
Greens Conditions
Greens had been sanded and were cut extremely short which made them extremely fast. Rest of course was in good condition.
Course Needs Help.
I have been playing Pine Forest for years. I have never seen the greens in such poor shape. Two guys leaving the course told me the greens were sand and dirt. I didn't listen to them and played the course anyway. I should have listened. There is almiost no grass on the greens and it is very difficult to putt on them. The fairways are not to bad. I left after nine holes and won't be going back any time soon. Hopefully the course will be in better shape later in the season.
Course in terrible shape
I have played this course periodically for over 10 years and usually love it. Usually beautiful and fairly well maintained. I played it 2 months ago and it was really nice. Sadly, we played this past Saturday and the greens were basically dirt and sand with little to no grass on several holes, the fairways were bad, and even the boxes were in poor shape. Not sure what happened but the course condition currently is plain awful. Worse yet, the guy in the clubhouse never said a thing. He let us pay full price to play and never mentioned that the course was in dreadful condition. If he had said it was terrible, I wouldn't have paid that to play, or would have at least expected a highly discounted rate. Quite sad about this. Good memories on this course. I will not be back for at least a year, if ever.
Great course
Pine Forest is a great course for the money. Only draw back is that it's an hour from where I live. It's a pretty course along the river.
Pretty course
Pine Forest is beautiful. The course is very green and well maintained. The Colorado River is very pretty and spring flowers are everywhere. It has been a while since I last played the course, the greens were challenging.
Letting the course go to waste
We have played Pine Forest at least 10 times over the last 6-8 years and we were saddened when we played yesterday by how much the course had deteriorated in condition. From the tee boxes where you couldn't put tees into the ground to the overgrown fairways to the greens which were bare of grass. The course just needs a lot of work to bring it back up to par. We love playing there and love the staff. The course just needs some TLC.
Enjoyable day
I always enjoy playing Pine Forest, it is a fun and challenging course that offers several elevation holes. The 11th hole is my favorite, every time I play I get so nervous driving up the hill knowing what is to come but at the same time it is invegerating when your ball falls in the fairway after hitting it over a canyon even Evil Knivel would not dare jump.
I also always feel at home when I check in, the young lady working the golf shop is always so friendly, which makes going to the course so much more pleasurable.
Very disappointed
Course was in horrible shape, esp. the greens which was not what I was told by the staff when I called the day before. Practice facilities were in horrible shape including putting green, chipping green, and driving range. There was no monitoring pace of play and when it came time for our tee time, another group stepped up on the first tee and took our time slot. So, we were delayed from the get go. We also had people hitting on top of us which was aggravating (and dangerous) so the course could really use a Marshal out on the course to enforce golf etiquette. By far, this was the worst experience I've had playing golf.
Great layout and views had a blast
Great layout and views had a blast. Very hilly course with incredible views and layout can be challenging on some holes. I would recommend this course. My only issue was I was disappointed in the greens being so rough.
Pine Forest golf
The course layout is very challenging but the course conditions need a lot of work. The fairways are sparse on grass and plentiful on weeds. The greens need attention and the bunkers need sand. Overall this course has a great layout with a variety of challenging holes.
Friendly Staff & Beautiful Course
Finally a birdie on Hole #12. Course is challenging. Requires concentration on sloped, undulating greens. The day we played, front Nine greens super fast. Back Nine greens slow. Layout is beautiful. Staff is ALWAYS friendly in the clubhouse and carts barn. Greens AND fairways in gorgeous condition. Thank you Pine Forest for keeping this course in such playable condition! P.S. Perhaps one day you'll get quiet, electric golf carts. That would be sweet, thank you.
Great Day!
Have played this course numerous times,I am always thrilled for the different elevations.

Beautiful but they need greens! Several beautiful holes. Thanks to golf now for directing me to this course at a good price. Some of the best views in the region. Super nice manager!
Always fun
Challenge with overseeing, but that will be ok in a few days. Greens are still running pretty well. Need to work on the tees. Always enjoy Pine Forest.
Bad Day at Pine Forest
The weather was fine but the course conditions were not. The greens had been over seeded and we're almost unputtable. The course was very wet and slippery. I slipped and fell as I was walking off the 4th green and I was not able to continue the round due to injury. Also, all of the tee markers had been bunched together on every hole, so there was only one spot to tee off from. As a result the turf was very chewed up and muddy, with little grass. The only thing I can say in defense of Pine Forest is that they apparently had recently added signage in some areas about slippery conditions, most of which were in reference to cart paths.
It did not help my attitude that after I booked my tee time in advance I got an e-mail offer from Pine Forest for $15.00 green fees with cart effective Monday, 11/14/16, due to overseeded greens. This offer should have been extended to us on 11/12. We paid $38.00 for the very poor conditions I've described above !!
