Golfer Reviews
Not what I had expected... in a good way
I must say that I had a preconceived notion about what to expect at Gunter's Landing, having never played here before. I had read previous reviews on Golf Advisor and thought the course perhaps was propped up by some overzealous locals.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
This makes twice in the span of seven days that I have fallen in love with courses within a two-hour drive that I had previously never laid eyes on.
The first thing you will notice as you pull in is this is not just another rural course trying to be something it is not. The conditioning is well above average.
The second thing you notice is the first two holes across the street, which ooze a common theme throughout the round: massive elevation change. In fact, the tee shot on two is exhilarating!
The collection of par 3s here are among the most difficult I remember playing. The first one, number three, requires a ~160-yard tee shot over water to a peninsula green that slopes severely from back to front. The fifth and 10th holes require downhill 150-155-yard shots to thimble-sized greens over large chasms.
One of my only constructive criticisms of the course lies with the group of par 5s. All are gentle dogleg rights. Though there was some variety in hazard placement, they played very similarly.
There were a good mix of uphill, downhill, long and short par 4s.
The back nine is more scoreable and more scenic, providing views of Lake Guntersville, the Tennessee River and surrounding mountains. The front nine is daunting, showcased by the difficult seventh.
What I find so intriguing about this course is that there is no weakness in your game that you can hide. You must drive the ball accurately, as trouble borders many fairways. Approach shots must find the right parts of greens, as you must be below the hole. Even the deftest of putters will be tested. The Bermuda greens were ultra fast. You must leave yourself below the holes to score well. Most of the greens are large and severely pitched, and putting across them, or downhill will leave you scratching your head. I three-putted three times, and it would've been twice that number if not for some +10-foot saves.
Knowing how to club up and down due to elevation change is a must. Also, grab a free course guide from the pro shop if it is your first time. You will need it to gauge layup points on the par 5s.
The range was modest, but serviceable. They have a really cool two-hole short course practice area.
In conclusion, Gunter's Landing far exceeded my expectations and will put pressure on all facets of your game. If one part is off, even better players will struggle to break 80.

Course was in excellent shape , greens fast and smooth.
Gunters Landing
This was one of the most scenic golf courses I have ever played !! Course conditions were out standing and the greens were 2nd to none !! It was 4 hours of pure pleasure, but the course was very challenging. Lots of elevation changes. The staff was warm and friendly. If ever in the Huntsville area, this is a "must play" golf course. It will leave a smile on your face !!!
Gunters landing
Awesome course. 1 of the most beautiful rounds of golf I've played in a while. Definitely will be going back and I'm over 2 hours away.
Fantastic Course
This course was in great shape. The greens are FAST and firm and extremely consistent throughout. The staff is awesome and I will definitely be back
Still good, but ...
The course is still one of my favorites in Alabama. It was, however, a little rough this time. Several of the t-boxes were in bad shape. Some of the fairways were a little thicker than normal (lost two balls in the middle of the fairway). Several spots on the cart path need TLC. It did appear, however, that there were some new areas, and I did not check with management to see if all areas were being redone. All in all, I still believe this is one of the best courses in Alabama.
Super Course
If you are up for the challenge Gunder’s Landing is more than enough, but be sure of your athleticism there are between 4 to 5 holes it is cart path only even if it hasn’t rain think maybe it is you are playing in some valleys with mountains on both sides but the turf on the fairways and the greens are spotless and I mean groomed to perfection, so the walking is nothing more than exploring don’t worry you will be leaving just as I was not wanting it to end
Good Day
Always a beautiful presentation of mountain golf. Do your dead level best to stay below the hole on every green. Only real issue being many fairways continue to be a bit thin for the otherwise top notch tract.
great round of golf
our twosome did 18 holes in a little over 3 hours...enjoyed it tremendously
Prettiest course ever
I’ve played many golf courses and the course itself was in perfect shape. The fairways, greens, and collar were in prestine condition. Greens rolled perfectly, fairway lush and even rough was perfect and just the right amount of fluff to hit off of. The vistas were breathtaking in any direction you looked.
There was one hole on the front we did not like and was very difficult for the average golfer to play and some if the par 3 were all carry to the green. Back nine seemed more player friendly. My husband and I liked that the pro shop let us start a little early and play by ourselves. We played in less than 4 hours.
Nice day out
Played Gunner's Landing yesterday. Course is in good shape for this time of year. The bermuda fairways are fully dormant and very thin. Greens are in good shape. Bermuda grass - slow up hill and pretty darn fast down hill. Awesome layout and not crowded at all. Had a great day
Overcharged
GolfNow is stupid and so are their workers. Called to change a tee time and they charged me for two tee times the same day. My brother payed for 2 and they counted him as 1 and then they charged us again for our 5th. The front desk at the course could not have been less helpful.
Just a little damp with dormant grass
Love the layout of this course. Very challenging with lots of elevation change and plenty of water.
Sorry you did not have a good experience during your visit. Would you please provide details about what you liked or disliked about your round/visit.
