Ok layout, SLOW
Played on a Saturday morning. Course layout was nice. Greens in good shape, rolling true, the rest of the course was not in great shape. Patchy fairways, shaggy tee boxes, and lots of dead , dry spots. Overall about what you would expect for the money this time of year.
Pace of play was very slow. Starter didn't seem to have much control and no marshall or Ranger to be seen to keep people moving. After the starter told us "it's moving pretty well, probably take you around 3.5 hours", ended up being a 5 and a half hour round. I'd definitely give it another shot just not on a Saturday.
This course needs work
Being as I live in the golf community, I am able to play this course quite often. Recently I have noticed a major lack in care towards the course conditions. There are huge holes in fairways, sprinklers go off while golfers are playing, and the pins are never all in the same positioning for the day. To add onto that, I've noticed some things with the workers that shock me. One guy rides his maintenance cart erratically, cutting across fairways while golfers are in play. I believe this man is head of maintenance for penderbrook. And for the first time ever, I had a very nasty experience with the man in the pro shop who gave myself and the golfers I was with attitude when asking about rain checks. Overall, if you end up having to pay the full $50 to play here, I would suggest saving your money or spending $10-$20 more on a nicer course.
STARTERS NEEDS TO BE CHANGED
I played here on sunday the 11th of june. THe gentleman at the check in desk was nice enough but seemed pretty busy. Course was in great shape and has improved over the years. But who the hl hired the starters this year? The gentleman in the pro shop pointed to two kids who were both talking on the phone blatantly ignoring golfers who needed assistance. The pace of play was horrible. With 2 starters not one could do a marshall lap and try to speed up pace of play? Instead i see both of them laughing and giggling inside the cart barn. Wish i could give this course a better rating its in great shape.
Great course
We played here on a Tuesday, thinking maybe it would not be busy but we were wrong. It was about a four and a half hour round, though so not too bad. The course itself was in pretty good condition, some construction taking place, but nothing that affected a tee box or green. There were two holes that here pretty unforgiving - one was a par 5 that almost U-turned, making it pretty difficult. The other was a par 4 that did a complete left turn, which was also hard. That being said it was our first time playing here, so maybe now that we know that, it won't be so bad next time, and there will definitely be a next time. The only real drawback for this course was the staff. While extremely friendly, I had to go back and ask if there was a starter because I didn't see one and people seemed to be firing at will, teeing off whenever. The guy in the pro shop pointed at the "starter', a young kid who was moving carts and talking on his phone. I never saw him speak with any of the golfers, so I had to go to a foursome that was waiting to tee off and tell them we were actually in front of them, something the starter should have done. Then, on the 17th tee, a cart came driving towards us, which turned out to be the cart girl. Even though our playing partner was mid-swing, she did not stop and kept barreling towards us. I feel that she was never taught, but for own safety as well as golf etiquette, once she realized someone was teeing off she should have pulled over.
Always a great course to play. Some challenging holes and price is great.
Friendly Staff and Great Course
Saw a hot deal and had to take it since I had the day off work. Went out as a single, arrived a little early and was allowed to just get out and get going which was great! Only one other singleton about 4 holes in front of me. The course was in pretty good shape, some work being done on a few holes but I thought overall it was much better than some of the reviews indicate. The guy in front of me was playing as if he was a PGA pro taking multiple practice swings, measuring and walking around the ball for every shot. Ended up catching him on the 7th and had a slow grind the rest of the day but other than that it was a great time and will be going back again with some friends!
Greens were not Green
Some greens were in pretty good shape while others look like they had not been gotten to yet. The entire course appeared to be going through renovation-lots of work all around. Lots of debris throughout the course...ie fairways around the greens at the tee boxes. I would strongly like to recommend that options to take advantage of military and seniors discounts when making tee times online.
Fun to Play
I'm from Texas. DFW area. First time I played this course. Our courses are already in good after winter shape. Courses up here have another month. That being said, overall for this time of year the course was okay. Fun to play because of the shortness of the course. You can actually drive a few greens that, by the way, are a little slow but putted true. Loved the elevations. A few blind shots but no big deal. Makes it more fun. No need for anyone to be critical of this golf course. Stars above the goat track Patuxent that I played last week. That course would be much better after being bulldozed.
I stated my handicap was 0-4. That was before the back surgery I had in December. Felt pretty good on Sunday. Should be back to normal by summer.
Course is in POOR shape!
The management company needs to spend some money to maintain the course, since it looks so bad---roads are crumbling, weeds are everywhere, bare patches around the greens are plenty, etc. Overall, the course is decaying. I won't come back!
Revisiting an old favorite
I had not played this course for over 10 years when the league I was in switched locations. Back then, course conditions had fallen off drastically. I have monitored reviews since then withi very few good ones posted. I decided to give Penderbrook a try on April 5th. As I played, good memories of why I used to enjoy this course came back. Layout is very playable and not so long that it is unforgiving. That said, conditions have improved somewhat but not greatly. Tee boxes need real grass, not weeds & dirt. Fairways are fair. There are a few areas of irrigation disturbance that need attention. I always putted well on the greens and yesterday was no disappointment. Not Oakmont or Augusta, but definitely worth a play if you can get a good deal.
Overall Good Course
Overall, I really enjoyed this course. The greens were not the best, however, I did played in the middle of winter so I did not expect them to perfect. I plan to play again hopefully during warmer months and I will see how conditions are then. The course layout was fun and interesting to play.
get what you pay for
This might be one of the worst-kept courses in NOVA. Greens are inconsistent and fringe/first cut vary from bare earth to grab grass.
Penderbrook
Greens in bad shape, like putting on concrete.
Thank you for playing Penderbrook. Unfortunately, the extreme heat and lack of good rain has left some of our greens in rough shape these first weeks of September. With milder temperatures and some re-seeding in the weeks to come we should see a quick rebound in green condition. We look forward to your comments on your next visit. -Management
Seen Better Days
I haven't played Penderbrook for about 15 years. It struck me as average back then, and it has gone downhill since then. This course needs some maintenance. The greens were in good shape, and for the most part the fairways as well, but the tee boxes and the fringes around the green were what I'd consider unacceptable for a golf course if the management of it wants to remain competitive in the market. The tee stands and fringes were mostly crabgrass, and the ground was too hard to even insert a tee properly. I do like the course layout, and the amenities are terrific, but some basic course maintenance would go a long ways to improving the golfing experience and my overall impression. I will play here again because I generally did enjoy the course, but it is pretty far down my ladder of local courses.
Thank you for playing Penderbrook. We certainly appreciate your long time loyalty to the course. This summer in particular has been a difficult summer for many Northern Virginia courses. With milder temperatures in the near future and some re-seeding in the agronomy plan we should see a quick rebound in the weeks to come. We are glad to hear that you appreciate the layout. Thanks again. -Management
Challenging course design
Challenging course design, but poor maintenance. A lot of bold fairway, lots of devots in the green. But the course layout made me focus more on attacking the course than the condition of it.
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
Thank you for playing Penderbrook. This summer has been a very challenging summer for many golf courses in Northern Virginia. We have been very proactive in executing our agronomy plan which included a pre-emergent fungicide in the spring. Unfortunately the incredible amount of rain we experienced in May and again in July caused this pre-emergent to break down and lose its weed prevention properties. The majority of courses in Northern Virginia have struggled to maintain their greens with the climate the state has experienced this past August. We have begun re-seeding areas that we lost grass in the fairways and the greens. We have seen a good rebound on all of our playing surfaces in the last week and expect to see a surge as overnight temps lower into the 60’s, perfect weather for cool season grasses. Please accept our apology's and know we are working hard to get Penderbrook back to the conditions that we feel you will enjoy. – Management.
