Don't waste your time or money
I played on a Sunday morning and was extremely disappointed.
First complaint: The place didn't have anyone working their concessions area so you couldn't take anything out onto the course. They didn't have the snack shop open at the turn nor did they have a cart girl. Smart choice on a busy and warm Sunday.
Second complaint: The course did not have any form of a Marshall or any type of employee monitoring the pace of play. This easily could have been a 4 hour round but the lack of monitoring led to a couple slow groups (one of which was a 5 some) to take their time and hold up many others. How do you allow a 5 some on a busy Sunday?
Last complaint: the starter, and only visible employee besides the girl in the pro shop, was incredibly rude, pushy and completely unprofessional and unaccomodating.
I realize that the round was only $60 but considering the other problems experienced you better have one great course to make up for the rudeness, pace of play and lack of F&B options, and they most certainly did not. The course is decent at best. It is not maintained well, dying fairways and beat up greens. Take your money elsewhere until this place reads a manual on how to run a golf course.
Last Saturday
The clubhouse closes at 7 pm. Not the place to stay and have a after game beer. The bartender cleans the kitchen and doesn't wash his hands before providing a beer with his fingers on the part of the cup from which you drink from. We had to remind the guy about that. Clubhouse is kind of filthy and dirty.
Good Deal if you catch a Hot Deal
Its a little overpriced for the regular green fees, but I played on a hot deal which made it worth the visit. The course is tucked away in a community which presents houses lining the fairways. Very beautiful and relaxing scenery. My only complaint is that the greens are very small and don't hold very well, making GIR very difficult. Other than that, its a nice golf course to play.
good features
Pleased w condition and layout of course.
It was a bit slow in play but great course for price.
Golf Now Rip's Off Seniors
Good course, good conditions, plenty of challenge, makes you think, or if you don't you will add strokes, nice staff. But, if you are over 60 yrs. book directly. Golf Now cost $47.30x2 - if I had booked direct cost would have been $35.00x2 so I spent $24.60 extra for NOTHING. Golf Now does not book Senior rates...too bad. And, the course would not refund anything...I don't blame them.
Pleasantly surprised
It has been several years since I last played Penderbrook and was very happy with the course. The course was in pretty good shape and the pace of play was good for a Sunday morning. I will play it again soon!
Good changes for Penderbrook
Although I rated most average that is a huge upswing in how things were a year or two ago. I heard there was vast improvement and I gave it a try. Glad I did as things and conditions are much better. Still some "gimmicky" holes but you better hit it straight.
Poor Management
Management told us that they were in the process of putting water in the coolers before we started playing. By the 14th hole and 6th empty water cooler, we finally called to complain and needless to say they still didn't care to address the issue. Hot day in August with no water in the coolers and no beverage cart available, not good at all!
Pace of play was poor due to close tee times with large groups! By the 2nd hole, we were already waiting to play with four groups on the 1st hole waiting on the group in front of us.
The course should be more taken care of
I hope that American economy should be recovered as soon as possible. Then course fairway would be much better than now.
Best Condition in years!
fairways and greens were great! Best in years...rough was thicker than before....will play again!
Good Deal
Overall course conditions were good,. Tight fairways added challenge. Greens were in good shape -- rough needed mowing. Facilities were good - no locker room to speak of. Staff was great. We'll be back.
OK course
Ok course for the price.................................................
Headed downghill
I have played Penderbrook a few times over the last 18 months. The care and upkeep given to the course is rapidly declining. This is not a $65 course for Northern Virginia. The Tee boxes are in poor shape as are most of the greens. The best thing you can say about this course is you can get a decent tee time on a last minute basis because there are much better choices out there for the golfer that plans ahead.
Course Looks Good
First time playing this year at Penderbrook. Fairways and greens look good with minimal spring areation impacts on greens (almost recovered completely. roughs were pretty rough but we have had alot of rain over the past week. Looking forward to playing here the next time. The twilight rate is awesome at 25.
Worst customer service!!
I reserved my tee time through Golfnow.com with $25 remaining balance to pay the course for a tee time at 2:40. I was a single player and checked in about 1:00 because my schedule cleared up earlier than expected. They tried to charge me a doubled the amount until I showed them my email confirmation. The course was wide open where I could have teed off with a 2 some right away until they radioed the starter that they wanted me to wait until at least 2! By the time I waited from 1 to 2, there were only 2 groups (less than a 4 some) that went off. Were they trying to teach me a lesson for paying a low price or coming too early or just bad management?!?!?
Just OK
Short track with small, challenging greens. The course would have been way too short and easy, had it not been for the conditions. The rough was long and thick. The greens were small and hard. I play a high ball flight and can spin my short irons a bit, but I had difficulty holding some of the greens. Some of the fairways were in pretty bad shape. Three good drives down the middle ended up with bad lies due to divots and poor grass growth in the fairway.
As far as putting goes, the greens were immaculate. The ran fast and true. Some of the nicer public course greens I have played in this area.
The course is appropriately priced. $65 on a Sunday morning was completely fair for this course. Because of the fair price, I will likely play this course again.
The course is in excellent condition
I really enjoyed playing my round of golf. The service is always excellent and the staff is extremely friendly. The greens and the fairways are in great condition. I love the par 3's which are beautiful and exciting to play. I keep coming back to play every week since the green fees and the twilight fees are very affordable.
Good Location???
I try to be fair in my reviews so let me start with the positives - one of a few public courses near the main DC metro area, great uneven lies with different holes, really friendly staff, and an excellent price with free replays (loyalty card makes it worth it if you play there several times). The negatives of the course start with the length of the course but reaches its climax with the pace of play. It is a very short course but that could be a good thing too for shorter hitters and beginners. The biggest downside of the course is the pace. Due to the rate of the course, there area lot of beginners and others who play at a slower pace so there is a lot of waiting between holes. If you want to get a decent paced round, be there before the post-work crowd gets there. There is also no driving range at this course so warm-up on the first tee.
