Overrated compared to other local courses
Got on as a hot deal and had a relatively disappointing round.
I’ve played the old course before (regularly in high school as it was a tournament course for our team). They’ve clearly invested a great deal of funds into the course and area surrounding it, but my interactions with staff were extremely negative. One guy working the pro shop, too busy being rude to folks over the phone to check us in in a timely manner (took almost 10 minutes for our group to check in).
Once checked in, the starter stared at us like we were crazy people until we finally took the initiative to ask which carts he’d like us to use (he seemed disappointed that we interrupted whatever he was doing on his phone)
The fairways were gorgeous from the tee, and we were finally off. The fairways are about the only positive thing to say about the course. The rough was extremely deep and clover ridden (like lose your ball after a drop thick), and it seems everyone who plays the course is allergic to fixing divots on the tee box or the green. Multiple tee boxes contained more mud than grass. Greens haven’t been rolled since dinosaurs ruled the earth and were EXTREMELY slow. (Along with being laden with ball marks, I mean millions of ball marks)
I always really look forward to playing when I come home to visit, but I’ll visit any number of the other courses in the area for a better experience. Hopefully if you chose to play here you have a better time than our group.
Scorecard mismatch
Really nice course, especially for the money. Pace of play was pretty slow, but they did have marshals out regularly, which I appreciated. Only con was that as a female, I chose the golds to play -4900yds, but ended up playing from white distances most of the day which meant 160+ par 3’s. Several really long 4’s. I suspect we probably had an additional 400-500 yds. When I nicely (yes, really) said something to the guy in the pro shop after the round as an “FYI”, he literally rolled his eyes at me and said nothing and went back to putting putters back. A simple, “oh we’ll look into that,” could have been nice. I just wanted them to know the scorecard didn’t match. Apparently they’ve had some tournaments so moved them back (a different guy told me that). Will play here again because it’s beautiful, but I could have done without that interaction.
Fun Course
Fun course to play for golfers of all skill levels. Course is in good shape, greens roll well with some tricky hills on some holes. Pace of play can sometimes be a little slow, and wish they would put more sand in the green side bunkers on some holes. Course has no water hazards but can definitely still be challenging. Staff is friendly and have a pretty good food. Would recommend to anyone.
Updates to course
Switched front and back 9s. Makes more sense. A bit more work to get something on the turn. Course was in good shape. Pace of play quick, was out early which I’m sure helped
Solid Course
Rolling Hills and trees make this a solid course. Well maintained and easy to find your ball if you aren’t the best golfer.
WOW! Best experience at SVGC ever.
First time out at the Old Course this year. It was very serene to say the least. Joined up with another single. Our skills were comparable. No group behind or in front. Took our time and enjoyed a great round of golf. As always, the staff is pleasant and welcoming. The golf shop is now at the barn- you could mistake it for an upscale bar! The grounds crew is hard at work getting the course in shape to be one of the best in the area. Can't beat the hot deals on GN. Can't wait to come back.
Beautiful and challenging
Amazing condition, super professional and polite staff
Enjoyable Course
I have played this course since the 1980s and have always enjoyed it. Today it was in excellent shape and not crowded. I look forward to playing again in the near future.
Great Place for a round!!
Fun course!! Great people!! Halfway House is a nice addition. Cold Claws!!
Old course in great shape
Really enjoyed this course, had not been here since pre-Covid.
A little slow
Personally, i found the pace of play to be really slow. Felt like we were waiting at least 5 minutes between holes. Most of the time, the group behind us were waiting at the tee box before we could tee off. We were stacked up at every tee box. I did not have a good time because of the excessive waiting.
Very nice course and staff
Course was in good condition. Grounds crew was busy which shows they are taking care of they course. Greens were fast since we haven't had rain in a few days. Some tee boxes could use water. Very welcoming staff. Will be back soon.
