Top 25 Public Golf Courses in Virginia - Golfers' Choice 2025

With so many top public golf courses, Virginia is for golf lovers.
Omni Homestead - Old Course - first tee
This first tee on the Old Course at the Omni Homestead is the oldest continuously operated first tee in America.

Did you know that Virginia is home to the golf course with the oldest continuous first tee in America still in use today?

Yes, the Old Course at the historic Omni Homestead Resort & Spa made our list of the best public golf courses in Virginia.

GolfPass releases a Top 25 Public Golf Courses in Virginia every March thanks to YOU. We create our annual Golfers' Choice lists by curating the reviews submitted by everyday golfers. We use GolfPass' Ratings Index logic that weights newer reviews and combine it with a course's subcategory averages.

Each course needed at least two reviews and at least some public access to qualify. Famous courses like Royal New Kent (which didn't make the cut), the Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club (which didn't make the cut) and the Highland Course at Primland (which hasn't been reviewed on GolfPass since 2021) aren't part of our list. Private clubs like The Virginian Golf Club and the Kinloch Golf Club weren't eligible.

We make our Golfers' Choice best-of lists user friendly. Simply click on the photo of each course to learn more about the facility or to book a tee time (in most cases).

    48

What they're saying: "I have played all of the Strantz courses in NC, SC, and VA and this is by leaps and bounds ahead of all the others. First (the) price the MUCH cheaper than the rest. Look at the price for Tobacco Road - that's crazy. Stonehouse has all the quality holes that Tobacco Road has and saves yours tons of money. If you can only play one Strantz course. THIS IS THE ONE BLOWS ALL THE OTHERS AWAY. This has the same shock factor as the others but with some of the best staff of all of them. Play this one over the rest. You will not be disappointed." - GolfPass Reviewer

I love the ham sandwich they sell, and the women in the snack shop are always friendly. I want to give JT, the course pro, a shout out for his professional-ism and great courtesy. JT is very enthusiastic and great to talk to. He makes you want to come back." - Louis8243709

What they're saying: "This course is always a pleasure to play. Played after rain and the only issue was range was closed due to rain. Really should consider relocating the range or raising level as it will always flood because of the lower elevation. All in all course was great to play as always." - daniel4050658

    53

    Green fee: $44-$65
What they're saying: "Great greens, excellent fairways. True mountain golf. Have your straight game. The only suggestion I would make is more definition of hazards to speed up play in the woods. Stake it out, give options. Great course." - bustycan912

  23. Twin Lakes Golf Course - Lakes Course

    Clifton, Virginia
    Municipal
    4.0960191913
    274

What they're saying: "This course was recommended by several people I have played with in recent weeks. The layout of the course is very eye catching and fun to play. The rough was 4-5 inches deep and several times my playing partners and I lost balls which should have been 10 yards off the fairway. The exceptionally long rough would be my only criticism. Tee boxes, fairways and greens were all in excellent condition." - Rtfd515

  24. Stonewall Golf Club

    4.4795250547
    1128

    Green fee: $90-$120+
What they're saying: "Beautiful course, well maintained and challenging. Lots of blind tee shots, if you like those. And the Snack shack needs more choices…like when the group ahead of you buys ALL the cheeseburgers and hotdogs, at least have something else…snickers, chips, something!!" - Jill5773855

  25. The Old Course at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club

    Front Royal, Virginia
    Semi-Private
    4.3754395022
    454

    Green fee: $35-$75
What they're saying: "The tee boxes, fairways and greens were quite good; the bunkers were only okay and the rough was sketchy. The course was interesting and a fun layout. The pace of play was not good due to the starter not pairing players up - there were several twosomes and threesomes - we paired up with another twosome after a few holes and that helped, but it was a 4 and 1/2 hour round. We stopped for a light lunch and it was excellent! We will play here again when in the area." - maddog54541
