Course Has Really Gone Down Hill
I have played Shenandoah Valley before but it had been a couple of years. The staff was fine. The greens were good, held well, and were mostly smooth. The issues for me were the fairways and the rough. The fairways were very thin. Many places there was little to no grass and very hard. The rough was just the opposite. It was very thick and the height was very inconsistent. There was no intermediate cut at all. You were either on the fairway or in deep rough. Weather here was been great with plenty of rain so the fairway condition kind of mystified me. I was very disappointed with the overall condition. It has deteriorated over the last several years. Also if you play here keep your head on a swivel. A lot of blind tee shots and the fairways are very close. One gentleman got hit in the head while we were there! There are better values in the immediate area.
What a treat!
An absolute favorite of mine. Great winter course as well, for those die hard golfers like myself. These three nines are always in tip-top shape. If you leave here without playing all three nines, you have done yourself a disservice.
Great as always
Played with buddy in under 4 hours. Conditions were fine. love this course
Enjoyable course
Great course to play. Im fairly new as a golfer. Good challenge. Great layout. I enjoy when I have opportunity to play this course.
Shhhhhhhhhh--keep this a secret!
Golf Now had a steal of a deal on a beautiful Saturday. I've always enjoyed this course as you feel like you've escaped. It's green and well maintained. The scenery in the area is an added bonus. Nothing but praise for this place.
Fun Course
The course has a great staff and makes you feel welcome. The pace of play was excellent (2 of us played 18 holes in less than 3 hours.) We'll will be coming back often!
Lovely, well-maintained course but slow play
This course is always in good shape. It is very playable, but not without challenges such as some blind shots and narrow openings. The greens are fairly straightforward but subtle breaks can confuse the read. Great staff and a good value. There is no water on this course but sand bunkers and thick rough add to the challenge. My complaint this day was the glacial pace of play, which is perhaps unfair as I was a single and did finish in four hours. That said, there was a group of three older players (and I am 69) in front that were painfully slow, holding up a twosome in front of me, myself, and a twosome behind me. No one was in front of them and they did not invite anyone through. At one point all three of us groups were behind them on one hole. No marshall there to scoot them along. Regardless, I recommend this nice course.
What an awesome course -- Worth the drive (no matter how far)
We had passed on playing the course a few times before because of the location, and what a mistake on our part. This course is beautiful, in EXCELLENT condition, and the people working there were all awesome.
It took about 50 minutes to drive there from home, and like I said was worth it. Would have played all 27 holes but the 3rd 9 (Red course) was already full, so only played with White and Blue courses (this time). I will be back as it is so beautiful.
No water hazards on the White and Blue (they have a cistern you can see from #1 on Blue, which is cool).
This course needs to be on your must play list, if it is already, move it to the top!!!
I will go back in October when the leaves have changed!
Great course, slow pace of play.
This is a really good course, nice Amenities. The only issue was slow play which could have been alleviated had the ranger did his job. Waited on each hole, saw the ranger once he was behind us the issue was ahead of us he tuned around and went in the opposite deriction.
Nice Track
Great course for a family. Not too difficult or long. Traditional layout with tree lined fairways.
Excellent golf course!
This golf course is a hidden gem. Immaculate fairways and greens. Worth the 40 mile drive. I will be back next weekend!
Love this course
My husband and I always enjoy playing at Shenandoah Valley. The course is always in great shape with lovely landscaping, and the staff is very courteous and friendly. Since it's a 27 hole course we can play different combinations of 18 holes, so it never gets boring.
Fun Course, Great Pace of Play
Another enjoyable day at Shenandoah Valley. The course was in perfect condition, as usual. The course is 60 miles from my home, yet I make the trek about once a month to enjoy the fun layout and fantastic pace of play. If I can find a bargain (like I did on this day), it makes it difficult to pass up.
Fantastic Conditions Demand a More Interesting Layout
I played Shenandoah Valley GC for the first time in a few years today and was pleasantly surprised. I don’t remember the conditions of this course being as pristine as they were when I played. I had just finished a round at Blue Ridge Shadows and was very impressed that SVGC had noticeably higher quality conditions all around. The relatively soft greens were immaculate with little or no ball marks, scuffs, bare spots, or signs of heavy traffic. Putts rolled much smoother (though a bit slower) than they had for me during my earlier round. Bunkers were raked and looked great, fairways and even rough were even and lush.
My biggest complaint about SVGC is subjective and not something that can really be changed and that is the layout of the course. I like that there are 27 holes so that even when there’s a league playing (like there was when I was there) pace of play isn’t disrupted too much. But there isn’t much character or inspiration in the design or layout of the course. Certainly Blue Ridge Shadows and even Bowling Green next door offer a more interesting course design, whereas many of the holes at SVGC run together and don’t offer any particular challenge. This is a relatively short and flat course, with no water hazards that I can remember, no forced carries, and only a few blind shots. This is a very “see the fairway, hit the fairway/see the flag, hit the flag” kind of course.
The upside, of course, is that this is a great course for beginners. The greens are not overly sculpted, the fairways have few undulations in them, and the presence of just three sets of tees often in the same tee box means it’s easy to know where to go and how to play. Just watch out for that rough because there are some areas where it is really thick. I didn’t have a hard time finding my ball but on a few holes I had to hit out of the rough with a wedge to get back to the fairway.
The off-course amenities are pretty good though I haven’t tried the food there yet. A final word of caution for those who like to play in the rain: bring a covering for your clubs, the carts do not have rain hoods on the back.
Overall I enjoyed my third visit to SVGC, and would definitely recommend the course to some (but not all) golfers. The excellent playing conditions alone are worthy of a good GolfNow deal.
Beautiful
All aspects of the course were great. Great are quick but true. Fairways were smooth. A pleasure to play.
