Makray Memorial Golf Club
About
Makray Memorial Golf Club (formerly known as Thunderbird Country Club) is a public course that has been open since 1962. To commemorate 40 years of great golf, the course was remodeled and revamped in 2002. The renovations improved its playability and also made it more challenging. The championship-caliber layout features strategically placed bunkers, including some Scottish-style sod-faced ones, and tricky water hazards on several holes. The hilly terrain offers both challenging elevation changes and scenic views. The golf course finishes with a long par 5 that plays across a canyon of berms to a narrow fairway. Further accuracy is needed to reach the well guarded green surrounded by high berms, a pot bunker to the left, and a deep, steep bunker to the right. In addition to the course, Makray Memorial G.C. boasts an extensive practice facility with 1 1/2 acres of grass teeing ground, two putting greens, and a short-game area.

Unfriendly staff
Unfriendly staff with smart mouth. Did not enjoy my round. Will not return again.
The course is well maintained
I had a really nice time with my inlaw would recommend to anyone.
Great place
Played on a Saturday morning, Course is in excellent condition, even with the amount of rain we've had lately. Greens very fast and fairly severe conturing. Overall, excellent condition and quite challenging. Option to walk is nice, and pace of play was 4:12, without seeing a ranger all day. I'm sure it takes longer later in the day, but at 8AM the pace was fine, although not really fast.
Firm but Fair Golf Course
Played as a twosome early on a weekday. Course was in excellent shape. Did not encounter the speedy green issue mentioned in many reviews. If you put shots on the green in the right place, putting should not be an issue. Good variety of hole configurations. Fairways are pretty wide, but the holes tend to narrow as you approach the greens. I shot an 88 on my first visit, and that is consistent with my handicap. Therefore I would rate the course as a fair test of golf.
Makray Memorial
Fantastically designed course with challenging and fast greens, undulating fairways, and a well manicured course all around. While the price of the course is higher than what I am accustomed to paying, the golfnow price was tolerable, and I would recommend playing here to anyone who is looking for a challenge
Bring your A game
The course is in very good condition. This course can be very challenging. The greens were lighting fast today. Faster than usual. You must shoot to spots on the green. Don't get caught above the hole or you will be three putting all day . I would not recommend this course for the high handicapper.
nice public track
Course is a real good public track with a lot of elevation changes for the Chicago Burbs.
Worth $70 for weekends
Good... but not Great
Sort of felt like I played two different golf courses. Front nine had some intriguing, very difficult holes, and was well conditioned. Whereas on the back nine, there were a few places where the grounds were not in the best shape, even bordering on being an eyesore. Overall though, the tee boxes, fairways, sand traps, and green complexes were in real good shape. The bunkering was well-designed too. The greens were surprisingly quick for this time of year. Difficult course. Pricey. Would play again for under $40.
Great Experience
What a fantastic place. This was one of the most beautiful place I have ever ben to.
Makray Memorial Golf Club
The Good: Formerly on the grounds of Thunderbird CC, this beautifully manicured public course was completely renovated in 2004. Parkland layout, yet expansive off the tee with extremely small, challenging green complexes. Great course conditions and super slick greens. Top-notch clubhouse with superb restaurant, banquet area, and pro shop. Nice driving range and multiple putting greens. Very strong Par 5's, particularly on the closing nine. Decent value for quality of course and conditions. GPS on carts!
The Bad: Greens can be so fast and undulating that the average 10-handicapper will have nightmares. Service is only fair for a nearly $100 price tag. Par 3's are relatively boring and limited dogleg variation with the Par 4's. Peak season cost be a little steep compared to other courses in the northwest Chicago suburbs.
The Verdict: Makray Memorial is an upscale golf facility in many ways, except having an exceptional course or service. A strong option in the North suburbs, but there are more fun options for less.
Best Hole: The long Par 4 #11 is a devilish hole that requires a long drive over water and an uphill approach to one of the smallest greens on the course.

This course has great.
I had great time to play I want to play all winter .
Great course
great design. Well worth the money. One of my favorites in the northwest suburbs.
gimmickie
Greens in late fall were in avg condition. Stay below hole because putts from above hole will never stop; sometimes unfair..Nice looking course but some holes are gimmickie.
Not bad
First time playing this course, (as a single). Started paired me up with another single and made us share a cart. I was not happy. I was there to play golf not listen to some guys life story in a golf the entire 18 holes. Total loss of concentration made me not even want to finish. If I don't have a buddy to go with next time I'd never take the risk of being forced to ride with a stranger. In addition the course layout is nice, but every hole everywhere is extremely hilly. I'd say 90% of my shots were played from awkward stances which made it difficult and just annoying. Sand, fairways, rough doesn't matter, your leaning down or choking up on the club. Tip for #2 don't hit it more than 25 yards past the 150 stake in the fairway from the tee.
Excellent Course
Very well conditioned. Little or no leaves on the greens or fairways. Bunkers had just the right amount of sand. Greens extremely fast. Maybe one reason for the 4.5+ hour round. Very friendly staff. tough but fair. rewards good shots, Would definitely recommend to a friend.
Gorgeous but monsterous
Beautiful golf course that I'm glad I finally played. That said, it was way too tough for an average golfer. The layout was tough enough, but the greens and pin placements made it beyond challenging and were flat out unfair.
Will play it again but only with a discount. Otherwise I'm throwing my money away since it's almost not enjoyable.
As good as it looks
Driven past this course many times and finally played it. It was tougher than expected and greens ARE fast as predicted.
Beautiful, great condition, challenging greens
It is now a regular course for me. Virtually no homes on the course, quiet and beautiful. Nice practice facilities and good food and views.
Greens are challenging, a good putter would do well. I'd "move forward" one set of tees more than normal. One problem they are now solving with "combo tees" is that between the front tees and next tees is too big gap. Something like 5100 to 6300. While 6300 is short for many golfers,as the course is a little tough, 5800 or so would be nice. And they are doing that.
Challenging course.
The course was in great shape, it had been a while since I had played Makray - decided to play and was not disappointed. Let me say, the greens are extremely fast especially if you are above the hole - to other reviewer - if you can't handle the heat stay out of the kitchen!!. A little pricey but great course.
Makray
This is a very tough course. You need to hit a long ball and be accurate. Rough was deep so being in the fairway was more important here than at most courses. Greens were lightning fast but true and in good shape. Greens are also quite sloped and missed putts would run by 6 feet or more.
