Makray Memorial Golf Club
About
Makray Memorial Golf Club (formerly known as Thunderbird Country Club) is a public course that has been open since 1962. To commemorate 40 years of great golf, the course was remodeled and revamped in 2002. The renovations improved its playability and also made it more challenging. The championship-caliber layout features strategically placed bunkers, including some Scottish-style sod-faced ones, and tricky water hazards on several holes. The hilly terrain offers both challenging elevation changes and scenic views. The golf course finishes with a long par 5 that plays across a canyon of berms to a narrow fairway. Further accuracy is needed to reach the well guarded green surrounded by high berms, a pot bunker to the left, and a deep, steep bunker to the right. In addition to the course, Makray Memorial G.C. boasts an extensive practice facility with 1 1/2 acres of grass teeing ground, two putting greens, and a short-game area.

Course has good practice facility
Greens fast, fairways good shape. Pace of play ok for weekend. Food at the turn just average.
Good layout, unfair greens
All I will say is that good luck if you aren't below the hole on every green. Putting sideways and down slopes that cannot possibly stop a ball is only reserved for Augusta. Again could be one of the best layouts in illinois, but unless they flatten out those greens, this will always be a terrible value for your money.
Country Club for All
This course has some of the best green in the Midwest. Even after an hour rain delay mid-round they were still rolling true and quite quick. The white sand bunkers are consistent throughout the course and make the sand somewhat fun. The course has up hill holes, down hill holes, down hill 1st shot to a elevated approach what else do you need. Best Public Course in the Northwest Burbs
Greens too fast, food service too slow
The course is in excellent shape, but more for single digit players. The greens are exceptionally fast for there pitch, leading to many three putts in our group. The rough is VERY THICK with no intermediate cut. We called ahead on the course phone for food from the ninth tee but when got there we were ignored by the bartender when we told him we called in and eventually left without food or drink.
Dybo's Take on Mak
Really a nice course, but someone has an extremely bad sense of humor regarding their greens...one should never play to underneath the hole only to put to it and find your ball back at or further from where you started...if you enjoy a mix of mini golf with your round, but all means check it out...fast greens no problem...pin placement with slopes added...poor decisions that take away a great experience.
Great track
One of the best courses in Chicagoland , great practice facility for your warm up before the round , driving range, short game area and practice bunkers, putting green by the club house and another one by the first tee . They have the best greens in Chicagoland , they always run around 11--12 , word of advise - keep your ball below the hole or you may find yourself 3-4 putting . Pace of play is always good, intervals are every 10 minutes so even if you find yourself in trouble you can make up time plus the rangers keep an eye on the course and if need to they will politely tell you to try to speed things up . After your round you can enjoy food and drinks on the patio and watch golfers "struggle "on 18th green . Be prepare for $92 weekend rate (around $70 weekday)
extremely good course
The greens are so good and fast. All courses are challenging. First nine were so difficult to make par or birdie even not easy to make regulation. It was fun and great time.
Good fun
Really had fun playing this challenging course. For a public course the conditions were really good. The bunkers had great sand, better than the private club I belong to. The fairways were in great shape especially since it had not rained much lately. Would definitely play here again.
Most challenging course in the area
The course is beautiful and challaging, starter put 4 singles together with no one else on the course which I didn't like, slowed us all down
Putt Putt Golf
I found that this course was in great shape with many scenic holes. The putting surface is, to put is simply, stupid. The greens are a zero on a fun or playable scale. On one hole on of our players was 10 feet below the hole put the ball 3 feet above the hole and it rolled back down into the back of the cup. If the cup wasn't in the way it would have been back where he started or below. On several greens the approach shot hit the front of the green and rolled off the back. It made for a very frustrating round as we were not trying to hit the green we were trying to be short so we could be under the hole. I would not recommend this course as it simply took the fun out of the round and attacking greens. The poor rating is obviously related to the greens. The golf course is nice from a scenic perspective and great if you like putting on a sloped pool table.
FAST greens (too fast), S-L-O-W Play
Course was in good condition. Greens were fast to the point of being unfair/not fun/ridiculous (and I like fast greens, by the way). Yes, I understand you want me to leave the ball below the hole but when I'm 30 feet above the hole and touch (not strike, push, tap but TOUCH) my putt and it rolls 30-40 past the hole down the hill...not good. I'd expect this on a mini golf putt putt course but not a regulation golf course I paid good money to play. Makray should put in the windmills and the clown's mouth to make the experience complete. No thanks, I won't be back
always like this course
well maintained considering players i have seen do not fix their ball marks, etc.
Super fast greens
I've never played on greens this fast. There's fast and there's ridiculous, these greens are just that. Course was in great shape but approach above the flag stick and you're lucky to three putt. Great course but challenging. Play the appropriate tees for your handicap.
Poor customer service
I've had problems with the employees numerous times. I would recommend stonewall orchard over this course because the course conditions are similar and stonewall has a better layout. If you are going to spend the money take it elsewhere to a place that is going to appreciate your business.
Quickest greens in town!
This is a gem of a course. Usually pricey, but got a good price through Golfnow hot deals. The course is pristine in conditions and just absolutely picturesque. The lightning quick greens we're almost too fast. It's ridiculous when you can't stop a putt on slopey greens and your ball easily can run off the greens where some of the pin placements were especially tough. You could only hope the hole would get in the way. Fairways like carpet made me understand why I saw so May walkers. The clubhouse is gorgeous and easily accommodated two weddings, a fiftieth birthday party, as well as the many golfer with no problems. Didn't eat there this time, but last time the food was great and judging the number of people there just for the dining, it obviously hasn't changed. I'd go back in a heartbeat!
The staff bring down the experience
The course was beautiful but I was treated poorly and disrespected by more than one staff member.
Shotmaker's course
Love this track. The strength of the course is in the slopey and speedy, tour quality greens. You really need to think about what side of the hole you want to putt from which makes for a much more interesting and demanding round of golf. The course can play pretty long and has mildly generous fairways. The front nine has quite a number of large trees that can come into play with shots off the fairway while the back is a little more open. The course is a great test of your skills and I highly recommend it.
No Customer Service
No help. Clubs were still at bag drop after I parked my car and checked in. It seemed to be an effort to get a cart and then I had to load my clubs on the cart. Not a big deal, but emphasizes no customer service. As I was checking in at the Pro Shop, the attendant couldn't be bothered to stop his conversation with his friend; it was as though I wasn't standing there! It took until Hole 17 teebox when a course official recorded my cart number; I didn't have the cart that was 'assigned' to me. Since I was not given the cart (see statement above) I selected the cart closest to my bag at the bag drop.
The course was in good shape despite the torrential rain 2 days prior; carts were 'cart path only'. Greens were very fast. Perhaps I would have putted better if the Starter did his job; as I was driving to the 1st tee, the Starter was in his cart, checked my receipt; no advice, NOTHING, except to talk with his buddies; which seems to be the theme here. The 4-some in front had some connection with the course. They were very slow, did not have any idea how to play cart golf; one would be in the cart as the other went to their ball then after the player returned to the cart, the next golfer walked to his ball. There was occasionally a 5th person in a cart (not a player) who rode with them on and off throughout the round. As a single, I waited on almost every shot and was never asked if I wanted to play through. I never saw a group in front of them!
Outstanding track. Very tough
One of the most challenging courses in Chicago golf. Excellent playing condition. Top notch facility. Extra credit to the guy at the turn who made me the best cheeseburger I have had in a while, perfectly cooked!!! My only complaint: If you are going to offer cold bottled water in coolers out on the track, those coolers should actually have ice and water bottles in them. Thanks again to the staff at Makray for a great day out on the links. We will be back for sure.
Challenging Course!
Do yourself, and everyone else a favor and don't play here unless you can drive the ball > 240 yards and score in the 80's.
The course plays fast and long. It's not like any other course in the area. You've really got to think about every shot...especially from the tee.
The staff is rude and act as if they're doing you a favor by allowing you to pay 90$ to play golf. But that really isn't a factor for me. I just laugh and imagine all of the bozos they probably have to deal with every day.
The range situation is also annoying. If you're paying with a credit card, don't let them dissuade you from purchasing balls, just because their antiquated dispenser only takes cash.
