Golfer Reviews
In great condition
My buddies and I play Blue Mash a lot because it is pretty centrally located for all of us and it's a great golf course. They hired a new superintendent this year and the course is in the best condition I've seen it in many years. I've played 4-5 times this year - a few times the greens have been a little slow and the tees a little shaggy, but the last few times everything has been immaculate. This is really great to see because we love the layout and location. Bottom line - awesome course that is in great shape right now.
Great layout horrible conditions
I love the layout of this course and have played it many times. My problem is that the greens are always running at a cool 8 (horribly slow for those who don't understand stimps). The tee boxes are unplayable and super soggy wet as most are 2-4 inches long depending on which combover you are playing off of. They grow the tee boxes long then lay them over to create an impression of more grass. The fairways are wet and 1 to 1 and 1/2 inches long. Very hard to compress the golf ball. I will say the staff is very attentive and try very hard to do there best. The course seems to be cut only once or twice a week. Not nearly enough for a course that touts itself as a daily fee and charges $95 on the weekends. The problem seems to be with the management of the course. There needs to be a change at the top as this course is too good to be in such horrible shape. I have also seen the equipment used to maintain course and it is ancient. Could this be the reason why it is in such poor shape. I have played many "daily fee courses in the area and this course is by far the worst". Please do something to fix this mess as this course is too good to remain in such state of lameness. Either fix it or drop your price as it is not worth the price of admission right now. Too many other choices in the area. The carts are terrible, old squeak and bounce. Please get new carts to reflect the cost of the course. No gps no rain hoods just old junk.
Poor course maintenance
I've played this course many times but this was the worst I've seen it in a while. Shaggy fairways, uncut tee boxes and dreadfully slow greens. The bunkers are scruffy and not edged. For $85, I expect a lot more. I would not recommend the course, unless something major changes ASAP. I don't know what's wrong with this place, sometimes its okay and then the wheels fall off.
You will not believe how much the course has changed in two days since you played, and how perfect and beautiful it is today. And the greens are rolling great. He did not mow greens on Tuesday because of the rain, and tee boxes had not been cut in a week because of the July 4th weekend and the rain on Tuesday. It won't happen again. The course is absolutely beautiful. I know what you mean because just a few days ago the greens WERE dreadfully slow and the tee boxes WERE shaggy. It was a temporary setback. But the turf is beautiful everywhere and everything is going to stay tight! Thanks!
Close to Great
Staff could not have been nicer, layout is excellent. Hit every club in the bag. Condition of fairways and greens was generally very good, but tee boxes were often poor. Read alot about pace of play in other reviews, but rangers did not seem too concerned about a foursome holding up play from about the 7th hole on. 4.5 hours isn't bad, but should have/could have been better. Need to bring range finder/GPS. Definitely returning.
Hi, thanks for recommending the course. The tee boxes were probably pretty shaggy on Monday after not having been mowed over the long weekend. Sorry about that - we'll work on that next time and try and get a mow in over labor day weekend! And we will also review with the player assistant on duty that day - pace of play is a top priority at Blue Mash.
Cheers!
Great layout too much play
It's the classic story, great course with not enough maintance. If you are in the area or have never played there it is a must play. I drove an hour and 1/2 and will probably not be back. Great layout with every type of hole you can think of,; tight holes, long 4's, short 4a, water, etc. My one complaint were the the tee boxes, they looked like they used the same ones for a week straight. Especially the par 3'a. At one point I had to tee off a yard behind the markers. Just to find an area without a divot.
Hi James,
Thanks for recommending the course - an hour and a half is a long way to drive!
We have very large tee boxes so we will try and do better moving the tee markers around. I played the day after you did and there was no problem with divot wear, though sometimes on the par 3s and a busy day it can happen.
Cheers!.
Great course for the money
2 days after the storm, it was still dry on the green, but had few puddles in the bunkers and fairways. Otherwise, great green speed, course was in pretty good shape, great value for the money spent. Played on a saturday and did not have to wait much for my next shots. Will visit again later on
Hi, thanks for the review. Hope to serve you again soon!
too long, or too short
loved the course. as a 12 handicapper, who is about 225- 240 off the tee, the tees at 6500 were too long. and the tees at 6,000 are too short. Why not a happy middle, like Waverly, of 6300? Par threes at 190 - 200 are not my cup of tea either. So, just a suggestion. I will be back. Several tee boxes were a mess , shaggy, and the greens had been beaten up, not enough people repairing divots.
very nice design, you cannot quit on any shot , that is for sure
one comment, something that rubbed me wrong, and that was paying to hit warm up balls. twilight, late afternoon or not, you don't pay $5 or more dollars and then have to buy balls. did not like that.
our group will be back, that is for sure! a tough challenging course, very nice layout.
Dear Michael,
Thanks so much for submitting a review of your round at Blue Mash. You bring up some good points. We actually could take a look at adding 100 yards to the white tees: Waverly Woods difference is 360 yards but the Blue Mash difference is 500 yards even though Blue Mash has one less stroke to par - so you have a good point there!
Second, in the past we have set up the blue tee par 3 yardage a little shorter on the weekends, however, we have a new superintendent this year and we may have forgotten to review that with him.
Third, that is our bad on the shaggy tees. Whatever the reason - a mower went down or an employee did not show up - the super admitted they were not up to snuff for the weekend.
With regard to range balls, after 2pm we offer a significantly reduced rate in order to accommodate those who want to enjoy Blue Mash at a lower price point. We maximize that discounted rate by not including range balls, as we know from experience that many golfers are not interested in hitting balls before their round. I hope that makes sense upon further consideration.
Thanks again for playing, and for your comments. We look forward to serving you in the future at Blue Mash!
Great course very fair
Really enjoyed the round. I played a few weeks after aeration. The greens were really good. I can only imagine what they are like mid season. I will definitely be back.
Hello,
Thank you for the nice review. We are so happy you enjoyed your round - it makes all of the staff efforts worthwhile. We look forward to serving you again.
Cheers!
Highly recommend
It's been awhile since I had played this course and I'm glad I got back to it. Greens had been recently aerated, but putts rolled well. The course is challenging from #1 through #4 but then balances out to more than fair. The layout offers a nice mix of water and treelined fairways. Can't wait to play here when things are in bloom. Pro shop and starters were helpful and friendly. Highly recommend this course.
Hi, thanks so much for the nice review - we are really glad you enjoyed your round, and look forward to serving you again.
Cheers!
punched greens
We like Blue Mash as a golf course. They punched their greens a few weeks ago (big holes) and they have yet to fill in. The course is in pretty good condition. Well worth a visit.
Hi Ballybunion72,
Thanks for the review. Cold weather has slowed the process of filling in, but we are rolling the greens every day to keep them smooth. Hope to see you again soon!
Really nice layout
A fun layout with a little bit of everything. I played the day after aeration, so I can't comment on the greens apart from some of them seeming like they'd be devilish under normal conditions. Otherwise a really enjoyable round.
Hi, we are really glad you enjoyed your round. Thanks for commenting!
Raw
It was a raw day and the course didn't have its spring coat on yet. Fun course, greens rolled well. Some sicker pins were set because of a preceding tournament.
Definitely recommend.
T. Woodsly
Thanks for the recommendation Mr. Woodsly. We are looking forward to a great year - new #1 fairway, new back tee on #7, new superintendent, and newly renovated bathrooms to boot! It's the new Blue Mash celebrating its 15 year anniversary!
Golf in January - Hard to beat
Really good course. Challenging. Bunkers in play on all holes. One of my favorite courses in Montgomery County. Hard to lose balls.
One negative - both my son and I got sick from eating a hot dog at the turn.
We'll still go back, but it didn't end well.
Thanks for the review and so sorry to hear about the hot dog! That is a gourmet hot dog and we will find out what happened there.
This course can be hit or miss
I've played this course countless times as I only live a few miles away from here. The conditions on any given day are very different and I've never really understood that. Some days everything is in pristine condition and the next many of the greens have dead spots and the rough/fairway transition and bunker areas are horrible. The 2nd and 3rd holes are very tough long par 4's to get the round going. Course can be narrow at times and has some nice holes and all in all is an OK course around the area. Play here when you can get a deal online and I would not recommend paying prime fees for this course. One course though to keep in the rotation around MoCo to switch it up.
Thank you for your comments. We share your concerns about the past inconsistencies, and in fact we will be hiring a new golf course superintendent in the coming weeks. We expect 2016 to be much improved and our goal is to return Blue Mash to its full glory week in and week out. Thank you!
Merry Christmas to me at Blue Mash
This was a great course on a great day. All I can say is I ACED the 13th hole. Best Christmas present I have had in quite a while.
Somewhat challenging but in the end not all that much to it
This is a good course, though a bit on the expensive side for what it is. Certainly the greens are not all in good shape, not by far, some of them are really ragged. It's about half a links course and half a woods course, not a bad-looking course, definitely a decent layout, but still a bit on the cheezy side. The really tough part of this course is the play on and around the greens. While the greens are spotty they do not really hinder play...the greens are just tough to putt, with a lot of action and medium speed. Greenside rough is hit or miss and many of the greens are tabletop greens surrounded by deep bunkers. The course places a lot of emphasis on playing in regulation, with a strong penalty for missing greens and taking long putts. But other than that it's not too bad even from the gold tees. It's not that long, not that tight...not too bad. A decent hitting, chipping and putting exercise on a course that is fairly decent looking, fairly flat, decently wide-open, and not too long. But still a good challenge. I would not say that this is one of the top 5 courses in the DC area, not at all, but it's certainly a decent course. A good one for the rotation.
Blue mash
A couple of greens had hydraulic fluid damage but it did not hinder too much. It was 48 degrees with 25 + mph winds but had a cart cover so wasn't too bad. Worth the golf now price for sure.
Thanks for the review - glad you enjoyed round despite the wind!
Great layout but course needs some loving
Blue Mash has always been a great place to play, but the conditions this time around were awful. The staff appear to be addressing the issue since we saw a number of maintenance crew out and about fixing tee boxes and greens. I would give it a month or so for them to get things right before going back.
Thank you for your feedback, we are hard at work getting all of the playing surfaces back to pristine condition.
One of my favorite courses
I definitely recommend this course, the only bad thing was some wet spots which is something that can't be controlled other than that I love playing here the staff is friendly and it's beautiful
Thank you for your feedback. We are working on eliminating the wet spots and we are happy to be or service!
i love this course
If you are looking for a great time on a golf course, this is the course for you.
I shoot in the mid-low 90s and am pretty wild off the tee at times but this course eliminates all of that. A lot of the fairways around the course are separated by hills which serve as a line of demarcation between adjacent holes.
It is very hard to lose balls on this course. Because of this, i splurged and bought Pro V1s for the first time and had a great round. Lost 2 balls the whole day. T
The greens were super fast and challenging. Fairways were great. This course was just so much fun. I love it
Thank you so much for your kind comments. The staff at Blue Mash works so hard and it is gratifying to hear that you enjoyed your round!
Glad you like the layout. It's an Arthur Hills gem. Greens were stimped at a 8.5-9 the day you played (our target is 10 - 10.5 and we will be there soon) and tee boxes and fairways cut to 1/2 inch 2-3 times a week (our target is 7/16, but we have a little extra thatch at the moment that will take some time to address. Tees and fairways will be cut 3 times a week going forward as we have just purchased an additional tee mower and fairway mower.) Dozens who played the day you played will attest to immaculate conditions, nothing too wet or too dry. Every inch of rough cut to 2" the day you played, using four rough mowers. We do need to tighten up the tees and speed up the greens - this is an accurate comment - and this will happen soon, but we have to be careful with the weather with how aggressive we can be. Almost $200,000 in capital improvements in the last year alone - new #1 fairway, new #7 back tee in process; renovated bar, bathrooms, and patio; new mowers, sprayers, tractors all purchased in the last year. Bunkers playing firm and have perfect depth of sand. Original bunker shapes are being re-established one by one, and slower draining bunkers are being updated one by one. Staff and management work overtime competing with County government/taxpayer subsidized courses and other courses that have gone bankrupt and sold for 20 cents on the dollar. No one works harder than this group here at Blue Mash, successfully in business for 15 years, and no one cares more, management included. Thank you!
My exact sentiments. Terrific layout but conditions are terrible. Again, shaggy, soft fairways, tee boxes and painfully slow greens. Golfers: expect more from the facility and do not play there, until major changes occur...look for alternatives. The course lacks detail and is run on the cheap. It's officially an over-priced muni.
