Golfer Reviews
Course is tough, a little beat up
Course certainly got a good deal of use during the year, and was beat up when I played in early Sept. Can be a tough layout on certain holes; either long and wide-open or short and tight on the par 4's.
I would play again, but earlier in the season to see if the course is in better condition.
New Experience
I am new to the game of golf but I truly enjoyed the layout of the course!
Thank you and welcome! We look forward to serving you in the future!
Turned into a dirt track
I've played here for the last four years. Every year, the conditions have gotten progressively worse and worse. The course has drainage issues, tee boxes are in bad shape, course is all burned out. I know it's end of season, but condition is the worst. To boot, they had the nerve to charge $79 per round. It's $40 at best. Go to Whiskey, Worthington, or Musket
We are sorry about the recent conditions. We are working to turn that around. The drought has not been kind to us. We hope you will give Blue Mash another shot in the future.
An enjoyable round of golf spoiled by slow play.
Every Staff Member we met was extremely helpful and friendly.
The Starter explained the problem areas on the fairways and was extremely helpful with his guidance on how to play the course.
The Course Marshall was very apologetic that the round was slow and he tried many times to speed up the groups in front but as soon as he was out of sight they reverted to all four going to each ball, watching the player hit the ball, having a chat about it and then all four zigzagging across the fairway and rough to meet up and play the next ball.
The round took nearly 5 hours and we waited on every single shot for up to 5 minutes at a time.
Some of the fairways were in poor condition due to a lack of water and the majority of the greens had in excess of 50 unrepaired pitch marks. Neither of these factors were down to the Course Staff who had done a very good job under difficult summer conditions. It was evident that the Greenkeepers were looking after the course where they were able to.
The course is well laid out and certainly makes you think about club selection rather than blast away with your longest club, the bunkers were in very good playable and were maintained to a very high standard.
Out saving grace regarding the slow play was having Max and Jarrod join us for the back nine, excellent company.
Thanks for the feedback. Staff has been working hard on the problem areas and the course looks much better. Greens are rolling great and the pitchmark problem is much improved.
Blue Mash Golf Course
This course has the best practice facilities in the area! Grass driving range, chipping green, bunkers and large putting green. Really good. The course from the 'blues' is approx 6600 yds. The toughest 6600 ive ever played! Water and sand await missed tee shots. The course staff is extremely friendly. The person at the counter made it clear to me that they did not like players using GolfNow! He told me they have internet specials just like GolfNow, but when he asked me what I'd paid he was super suprised when I told him $31! They're lowest price was $47. He was rude but I overlooked it especially when the outside staff could not be friendlier and pleasant.
I'll be back....but only at GolfNow prices
Thanks for letting us know about the rude sales person - I think I know who it was and were are working with him on that. Glad you enjoyed Blue Mash otherwise!
Great Layout. Walkable!!
Play was a little slow. Course was in excellent condition. Greens run very true.
Thanks - we work really hard on slow play but every once in a while a group gets away from us. We'll keep trying to do better on that.
Staff and Starter Aside, What A Beautiful Course
Course Review: This is what a review should really be about. This is a very well designed course that offers just about everything you would want in a fairly challenging round of golf. Greens were a little pitted with un-repaired ball marks, but that really falls on the patrons and not the course. Outside of that the greens were firm and quick and the undulations made you really think twice about speed and break. Course is fairly open even with the trees most balls are findable outside of landing in the tall grass and the few watering holes. But if you don't have accuracy issues like I do you just need to avoid a few well placed fairway bunkers.
Staff Review: So a few reviews touch on this about this course and that is the how the staff and starters are pretty poor. Don't get me wrong they are friendly, but there intelligence level is questionable. A twosome we were suppose to be paired with joined up with a foursome infront of us and got past the starter, despite the fact 5 minutes earlier you would've thought we committed robbery stopping 20 yards from the first teebox because the starter thought we were going off early and aggressively tracked us down. The starter then was unsuccessfully to break up the group of six through 2 holes, which didn't bother us because they were playing best ball and not slowing us down at all. But they were a little strict on upholding their rules to care. They should've of been a bit more understanding, oh well.
Very sorry about the problems with the starter. We do have a few new people that we are training to perform better in such situations. Greens did get a little soft during the heat wave as we had to water more - and that led to more ball marks than usual. Thanks for your patience and for your review!
Worth the money!!!
Course was in great shape considering it's the middle of summer and many golf courses are in rough shape. Greens rolled nice and pin placements were very fair. Well worth the money.
Thanks for your comments - we are glad you enjoyed your round! We will keep working to make the experience even better next time!
Great course
It was a little slow and a little wet from all the rain but we expected that. Very challenging course.
Mixed bag, but mostly disappointing
I booked in advance for an outing for 2 business colleagues who were going to be in town. The gentleman I spoke with on the phone was excellent. He was helpful, and arranged to reserve a set of golf clubs for one of my vendors. He was honest, and said that the set wasn't great. It ended up being a decent set of irons, with terrible woods, all of which were surprisingly dirty. Even if they're beat up, I would have expected them to be cleaned, but they looked like they hadn't been cleaned in years. No big deal. When I got there early that morning, the young gentleman in the pro shop was again excellent. Friendly, helpful, and even carried the rental set out to the cart. He directed my vendor to the restaurant area, and said there were complimentary breakfast items and coffee. As my vendor started to pour coffee from an empty coffee pot, the young lady barked -- yes, I said barked -- "that'll be 2 bucks." My vendor was clearly offended, and told her that he was told by the young man in the pro shop that it was complimentary. She corrected us, saying that they were for a specific group, and that the coffee was $2. I wasn't happy about her attitude, and since there was a misunderstanding among the staff, and the coffee pot was empty, she could have been nice and apologized or attempted to fix things, but she didn't. I would suggest to the GM there that she was in the wrong line of work. The starter was very nice, as was the Marshall. The practice range faces directly into the sun, so on bright sunny days, it's tough to hit range balls and see where the balls go to gauge your hitting, but it is natural grass, a plus. Some of the course was in okay shape, but the greens were really rough. It may be the most ball marks (and unrepaired ball marks) I've ever seen on a course, and I've played a ton of courses in 40 years. Pace of play was really slow for a weekday morning session. Even though we had an "almost beginner" in our group, we kept pace with the twosome in front of us, and they were slooooow! A foursome with a beginner should never have to wait for a twosome when there's no one in front of the twosome. After our round, we sat at a table in the restaurant area, and waited, and waited, and waited for someone to give us menus or offer to take our order. Since no one ever came to our table, we finally got up and left and drove to a real restaurant. The friendly pro shop guys, the starter, and the Marshall, were the only highlights of our golf day. The lousy condition of the greens and the slow pace of play, and the unfriendly girl in the restaurant area, along with no service in the restaurant area, were the unfortunate lowlights. Two to two and a half stars.
So sorry for our shortcomings that day. I'm actually most disappointed that the rental clubs were not cleaned - that is inexcusable. We've had quite a bit of rain every night and lots of play so the ball marks have been a problem - we will get on top of that. Food and beverage service is usually pretty friendly so I'm sorry you got a bad apple or two and some bad communication, and we will address that. The pace problem is unusual for a weekday morning - we must have been missing a manager that morning. Thanks for letting us know. We'll try and do better!
A course that should not take beyond 4 hours.
Got a great reduced deal on golfnow. Otherwise, too pricey for me on a regular basis. I was feeling the 90+ weather, an only finished 12 holes. Wish I could have finished.
Great Track
Paid $44 per player on a GREAT deal from GolfNow. At that price the course is a steal. Unfortunately the normal price is just too high, which is why I rated the value is average. The greens were very fast and the course conditions were really good.
NICE TRACK
Nice track. Fairly generous target areas, but with water often challenging aggressive target lines. Greens in good condition and relatively fast. Played in about 4 hours. Reasonable rates. Would definitely return.
good but need a educated staff
course was in a good condition.
I was in trouble with chipping and putting because of mowing guy who never stopped engine for 9holes out of 18holes. I was complaining about this during(by call-2times) and after (in person) but it was never corrected. staff did not react with this issue (maybe it always happens to them)
plus no flag on 18th hole.
Hi, both our manager and superintendent were aware of your play that day, and of your complaint about the maintenance crew. Apparently, you were playing as a single early in the morning, and given the speed at which you were playing, the crew had a hard time getting out of your way, and that is also why the flag was not in on 18. Sorry about that.
Sorry to hear your round was compromised by maintenance staff activity, and that we failed to correct it during your round. We will find out why that happened and correct it.
US Open qualifier course.... and played like it
This course will be a qualifier for the US Open and it was truly challenging. Pin placements were a bit unfair for the average golfer, being just a few feet off the green in difficult locations. The greens were very hard and ran fast. Rough was a "sticky grass" that grabs your club and the side grasses and fescues were way high. The course was in great shape- no complaints, but demanding for the average golfer. Maybe things will be eased up after the qualifier. The rating for the blue tees should have been 136 not 126.
Great course
First time playing this course, but had heard a lot of good things from buddies. It didn't disappoint. First off, the staff - esp. the GM Jason - were very friendly and accommodating. I had originally booked a tee time for four, but two of my buddies backed-out last minute (after the 24 hr cancellation window). I called the course that Friday and was politely asked if I would mind moving to a tee time 20 min earlier to join another two-some to open up my slot for those on waiting list. They even offered to give me $5 off (since the two-some we were to be paired with had received a discounted round). Fantastic customer experience.
As for the course, they make a point to emphasized pace of play, from the starter to the marshals, it's obviously important to them that people aren't playing 5+ hr rounds on their course. This was a breath of fresh air! We played a full 18 in 4hrs 5 min (!!). Incredible for a public course in the DC area.
The course was in great shape. It's a tough links-style set-up (with some trees and water) and a lot more fairway bunkers than I'm used to. It was good though b/c it forces you to hit different types of tee-shots than usual. This is certainly not a pull driver and rip it on every hole type of course. I did not hit driver once b/c I wanted to avoid FW bunkers at all cost and I still broke 90 (I'm a 14 index). The greens were difficult, but fair and typically rolled true. Basically, good shots are rewarded and bad ones punished... but unless you are in the water or high grass, a good shot (even if it's from the adjacent fairway) can salvage your score on most holes, given the course's links style.
I had a great time and it's not too far from the DC area (took me 35 min from Northern VA at 8am). It's a bit pricey (~$90 w/ a cart on the weekends), so that will limit the frequency at which I play it, but it's certainly going into my rotation this season and future seasons.
Cheers!
Good views
Good layout but greens were punched and very
Spotty.
Pace was slow.
Overall a challenging venue
Beautiful Day and a Beautiful course
It was a great deal at 40 bucks on GolfNow, the course was in excellent shape considering the February we had in the region. The staff were very helpful and attentive. I highly recommend the course as a place to play in Montgomery County.
Thank you for your feedback - we did have some problem areas this year starting in August but things have improved quite a bit. Soon we will be back to pristine conditions!
