Discovery Bay Golf Club

About
Opened in 1925, Discovery Bay Golf Club, formerly known as Chevy Chase Port Townsend Golf Course, has the distinction of being the oldest public golf course in Washington. Besides its long history, it has also garnered acclaim as one of the best golf courses on the Olympic Peninsula. Situated on the shores of Discovery Bay, the layout enjoys panoramic mountain views spanning the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges. There is more to the course than scenery though. The classic design is challenging enough to appeal to low handicappers while still being accessible for beginners. The course's back nine is more challenging than the front, featuring challenging elevation changes and some tricky lies. Be sure to bring your camera for the breathtaking view on Discovery Bay Golf Club's 10th tee.

Truly historic ambiance
The front nine truly has a historic feel about it, and is comfortably walkable. Everything is out in front of you, with a very pleasing variety of holes. The back nine departs somewhat dramatically from the front with terrain changes that demand the use of a cart for old guys like me. As with the front side, the variety of holes present you with one beautiful visual after another gorgeous scene.
Beautiful setting in the trees
The course, particularly the back nine, has a secluded feeling. It seems like it was carved out of a piece of northwest forest with lots of the original trees and undergrowth remaining. An errant shot seldom ends up in another fairway--it's more likely to be gone forever in the undergrowth. I've played the course twice and really couldn't draw even a rough map of the back nine--most holes seem to be isolated entities. When you finish the 18th hole and find yourself near the clubhouse, you think, "Where did that come from?"
Difficult Back 9
All fairways on back 9 sloped left-to-right or vice versa and were quite narrow with trees lining both sides. Also, the greens, while in outstanding condition, were undulating. I enjoyed playing there, but the back 9 was too difficult for my skill level. (Front 9 was less difficult and basically flat.
Turn for the worse
Played this course a month ago and loved it. Came back to play and the course is literally horrible. Greens are patchy and mostly dead. Tee boxes are slippery and muddy. A complete turn for the worse in about a months time.
Best Value on the Peninsula
The greens were excellent. Unlike other courses on the Peninsula the fairways were green. Great staff, easy relaxed atmosphere. Considering price, conditions and alternate venues on the Peninsula, Discovery is the best value going...
Great Shape Considering This Hot weather!
Played here a couple of months ago, I have always enjoyed the layout of this course. Conditions then were not bad, but I was completely surprised at how despite this brutal weather for growing grass the condition that they have the course in now! Fairways are not parched or dead and the greens are beautiful and rolling nice. They were out aggressively watering on this 90 degree day, good job to all.
Fun Course wth Friend Learning The Game
Perfect low pressure, forgiving course to enjoy a round with a friend learning. Flat front nine out and back. More character to the hillside back. Fairways were adequate. Greens were maintained well. Early Sat reservation found low pressure making for a comfortable fun round from the up tees
disappointed
very disappointed with the course conditions, many parts of the course was burnt with fertilizer. plugged and reseeded, plugs left in place, making it very hard to chip in places around the greens. Should be marked as ground under repair and free relief afforded.
greens are so hard that a good approach shot from 100 yards just bounces of the greens. then to add insult to injury, they just raised their rates. DISCOVERY BAY GOLF just dropped to the bottom of my list of golf courses. Its a shame because the course has so much potential to be the best
Some condition issues....
Many sections of fairways were browned and dead. When I asked about it I was told there was a weedkiller application "mishap" . Greens in good condition overall but many are way too hard. A sky high shot onto the green should be rewarded with more than a skip off. There were also a few areas around green fringe I would label ground under repair that were so soggy and mushy a couple of my approaches perfectly placed to release onto the green ended up plugging .Putting surface was very fast and smooth. Some new tee areas look great. I think once the kilt grass recovers and other early season issues are conditioned, it will be much better. My round was a great value @ $22 for 18 holes with a lower cart booked at 1pm on a Friday I had one play thru (i was single) and No delays after completing 18 in under 4 hrs time.
"great deal in the Burb's"
18 holes of fun in the sun, great green's , a ball hit off the fairway is in deep trouble! It reminded me of playing as a kid in the neighbor's cow pasture! Great fun ! Well worth the drive & you can't beat the price!
Friendly staff and inexpensive
The staff are very friendly and the course is not overrun by golfers. That said the front 9 is country golf in that the fairways and paths are very muddy. The back 9 is much more interesting but even then the conditions of the fairways gets in the way of an overall enjoyable day of golf. After losing my second ball in the fairway due to the ball plugging immediately and subsequently lost we decided to just play a best ball round and I dug out the cheap balls to not be upset over losing something that honestly should never be lost. I suppose this course would be much more fun in the summer when it is less wet but then I hear the course gets way more busy. Not worth the hour drive for me to play here again.
marsh golf
We played our round on a dry day but this course, apparently does not drain well. It was very very wet and mushy from tee box, all the fairways. The only exception was the greens which were dry and fast. Hard to make the change from marsh to cement. The only consolation was that we got an ultra cheap through GolfNow. Made up for a pair of wet pants and shoes.
Be prepared to get wet and muddy
Discovery Bay is often wet--excessively--in the Spring, and its no different the year (2015). The front is passable with care, but the back nine are in bad shape. Cart path only, but some of the fairways are swampy messes. Slipped and fell into muddy sod twice, not a happy camper. Wet feet after hole 2, but it was warm enough that this wasn't a spoiler. I complained and suggested closure of the back nine, but this idea didn't get any traction. If you play their, stay on the flatter front nine.
Great shape
I couldn't believe how great the course was considering how bad the weather has been! Beautiful course in the fall!
good value/scenic
Great value to play this course. Greens are in great shape. Will play again.
Like a beautiful walk in a lovely tree lined park
Beautiful condition. Fairways mowed and green. Some long holes. Front nine -- the old nine -- lined with a variety of trees planted a long time ago. Back nine with the best views of Discovery Bay and the most hilly. Great round of golf with a chance for lunch on the deck watching tee offs on hole #1 and the green on #8.
Like two courses
This is a good course but the first half is totally different then the back course. The front nine is fairly easy but then the back nine is a challenge and has absolutely beautiful views.
A Good Course for Beginners
Our group played the front nine. Both wives were beginners, but they didn't find it too difficult for them.
Discovery Bay is a gem
Great layout and the greens were in nice shape. Very challenging to walk.
