Discovery Bay Golf Club

About
Opened in 1925, Discovery Bay Golf Club, formerly known as Chevy Chase Port Townsend Golf Course, has the distinction of being the oldest public golf course in Washington. Besides its long history, it has also garnered acclaim as one of the best golf courses on the Olympic Peninsula. Situated on the shores of Discovery Bay, the layout enjoys panoramic mountain views spanning the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges. There is more to the course than scenery though. The classic design is challenging enough to appeal to low handicappers while still being accessible for beginners. The course's back nine is more challenging than the front, featuring challenging elevation changes and some tricky lies. Be sure to bring your camera for the breathtaking view on Discovery Bay Golf Club's 10th tee.

This course keeps getting better!
I should note that the 5 on condition is truly a superb statement on the effort of the current management in the context of where this course was a few years ago. The first time I played this course was about 3 1/2 years ago and loved the layout and green complexes but it was early spring and fairway conditions were not good...even to the point of where I would not have played it again if i didn't subsequently hear what was happening there. New owners are trying to make up for years of mismanagement and neglect and it is truly wonderful to see it progress! Didn't try the food and beverage, but it is nice to see that they have added it in...something to try next time (5 stars due to good-looking menu). Only complaint was that the greens were a bit slow but that could probably be due to when I played it relative to their care cycle and after a weekend of heavy play. Late afternoon on a Sunday.
Worth it even at full price
This is a great place to play. Golf the way it should be. If you want a perfectly manicured and sculpted course, choose somewhere else. If you want a great value on a scenic and challenging course, play here. You need every type of shot for the variety of holes and challenges. Some narrow holes, some aide holes, short par 4s brutal par 4s and even a "dogleg" par 3 if you play from the back. If you can play here, you can play anywhere. Walkable though back 9 is a tough walk.
Great Time
We like this course because it is dog friendly. Our small dog rides with us in the cart and loves being outdoors. The course is usually in good condition and it isn't crowded. They now have beer, wine and other drinks plus sandwiches. The folks that work the clubhouse are always very friendly and accommodating.
Great value for the money
I found the course to be easy to find and the course very fair and challenging the greens are very receptive and fast and true,a great value for the money.
Good bang for your buck
I've been golfing for 50 years and encountered a first during my round. Someone in a group ahead of us had their dog with them. It didn't appear to be a service dog, they just had it out for a walk during their round? This course is very rough. If you ride in a cart be aware of all the dips and holes throughout the course it can really jar you if you aren't paying attention. The back nine can be very difficult if you don't hit straight you will be looking for balls in the woods. This is an ok place to play if you are looking for an inexpensive place to bang the ball around but don't expect anything more.
6-21
Course is in excellent shape! This course should be on every golfers "must play" list.
30 min from hood canal bridge - worth the drive
Hidden gem
Great faiways and greens
Course very well maintained
Dog friendly
We really like this course. Also we get to take our dog and he loves it. Good burger! Dan is great! Golf now gives a really great value. Will be there often.
A hidden gem -- and you can bring Fido
Excellent golf opportunity. Mid range challenges with more open front nine and more elevations on back nine. Course is in great condition this year -- much drier with drainage improvements made. Greens are very good.
Can walk or ride, with the added benefit of allowing dogs on leads to join the fun.
Nice
Wet on the course from early rain but the day had little rain.. No one else on course so we had it to ourselves. Improvements in design since I played a few years ago. Nice
FunCourse
Great day, fun course, Ill definitely be back. beautiful setting close to the ocean. We visit Port Townsend twice a year and I will make golfing here a priority each visit.
Could be so much better! Potential is there
First off, this is a course my dad and I used to play when I was growing up. The cheap green's fee's and the 9 holes that were there made for a good time. They made another 9 and it was so enclosed that it wasn't as much fun. After not playing it I went up the other day. I actually loved the course. It was better then I remembered. The greens were irragated but that's why I got a cheap green fee. The MAIN problem that makes this course so much worse then it should be was the white flowers.. They are everywhere. I spent more time losing and looking for balls in the rough and fairway then I would of liked. If they took care of this problem my rating would change to a 4. It's not joke either. There is so many white flowers/weeds that you ball gets lost in the rough and fairway so much.. Carthpaths could also use some dirt to fill holes. It is a nice course if they fix these issues.
What a difference a year makes!
It has been almost a year since the first time my wife and I played at Discovery Bay. Since that time there has been a huge transformation. Not only on the course itself, but also on the clubhouse and pro shop. New drain fields put in. Grass is more evenly cut. Overall appearance is phenomenal.
As for the clubhouse huge changes have occurred with the restrooms, and other areas. They will continue to make improvements along with opening up a restaurant soon. My wife and I had a great time and Dan was just awesome. He is the type of guy you need in almost every pro shop. Knowledgeable, courteous, and willing to make sure you have a great time.
We will be back.

A good day
The course was a bit wet on the front 9.It looks like they are trying to fix that.It was still a good day
The Golf was good on this beautiful fall day. 10/14/2013
I found the course tobe ingood condition. The 90 degree rule was in place do to much rain the week befor my play. The Greens rolled true and again because of the moisture held well on approach shots. I had some good shots and some bad shots, it was an enjoyable round of golf.
great value in a beautiful serene setting.
This course is beautiful year round, although can get mucky after weeks of rain. It was in good shape yesterday in spite of recent aeration. The staff is friendly and helpful. The prices are very fair. I especially enjoy the casual rate of play . . . usually not pushing folks or being pushed by folks.
Great course and excellent value.
Enjoyed the course and the staff. The course is well maintained and the holes are varied and challenging.
Fun to play. Great rural setting
The front nine at Discovery Bay is the oldest municipal course in Washington. An additional nine, which winds through a forest, was added in recent years. It is a great course for the recreational golfer. Quiet, pristine area. Friendly staff and affordable golf.
Course needed some work
Played discovery bay on a vacation week where I hit a bunch of courses. I played it at 7:30 in the morning. I was the first one of the course. They were mowing the grass and other maintenance on the course.
The greens had moss or another disease.
Couldn't get the tee into the ground on the tee box.
Fairways were fine.
The course has a great view and a unique feel. I would recommend you play but don't pay too much.
Nothing to discover here.
An average NW course. The greens were overly moist and the fairways were pretty dry and brown on the fringes.
Play was fast and not overly crowded for mid-week play.
One item I felt should be at some of the tee boxes is drinking
water - there was none available.
