Opened in 1925, Discovery Bay Golf Club, formerly known as Chevy Chase Port Townsend Golf Course, has the distinction of being the oldest public golf course in Washington. Besides its long history, it has also garnered acclaim as one of the best golf courses on the Olympic Peninsula. Situated on the shores of Discovery Bay, the layout enjoys panoramic mountain views spanning the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges. There is more to the course than scenery though. The classic design is challenging enough to appeal to low handicappers while still being accessible for beginners. The course's back nine is more challenging than the front, featuring challenging elevation changes and some tricky lies. We played our round on a dry day but this course, apparently does not drain well. It was very very wet and mushy from tee box, all the fairways. The only exception was the greens which were dry and fast. Hard to make the change from marsh to cement. The only consolation was that we got an ultra cheap through GolfNow. Made up for a pair of wet pants and shoes.
Be prepared to get wet and muddy
Discovery Bay is often wet--excessively--in the Spring, and its no different the year (2015). The front is passable with care, but the back nine are in bad shape. Cart path only, but some of the fairways are swampy messes. Slipped and fell into muddy sod twice, not a happy camper. Wet feet after hole 2, but it was warm enough that this wasn't a spoiler. I complained and suggested closure of the back nine, but this idea didn't get any traction. If you play their, stay on the flatter front nine.
Great shape
I couldn't believe how great the course was considering how bad the weather has been! Beautiful course in the fall!

Great value to play this course. Greens are in great shape. Will play again.
Like a beautiful walk in a lovely tree lined park
Beautiful condition. Fairways mowed and green. Some long holes. Front nine -- the old nine -- lined with a variety of trees planted a long time ago. Back nine with the best views of Discovery Bay and the most hilly. Great round of golf with a chance for lunch on the deck watching tee offs on hole #1 and the green on #8.
Like two courses
This is a good course but the first half is totally different then the back course. The front nine is fairly easy but then the back nine is a challenge and has absolutely beautiful views.
A Good Course for Beginners
Our group played the front nine. Both wives were beginners, but they didn't find it too difficult for them.
Discovery Bay is a gem
Great layout and the greens were in nice shape. Very challenging to walk.
This course keeps getting better!
I should note that the 5 on condition is truly a superb statement on the effort of the current management in the context of where this course was a few years ago. The first time I played this course was about 3 1/2 years ago and loved the layout and green complexes but it was early spring and fairway conditions were not good...even to the point of where I would not have played it again if i didn't subsequently hear what was happening there. New owners are trying to make up for years of mismanagement and neglect and it is truly wonderful to see it progress! Didn't try the food and beverage, but it is nice to see that they have added it in...something to try next time (5 stars due to good-looking menu). Only complaint was that the greens were a bit slow but that could probably be due to when I played it relative to their care cycle and after a weekend of heavy play. Late afternoon on a Sunday.
Worth it even at full price
This is a great place to play. Golf the way it should be. If you want a perfectly manicured and sculpted course, choose somewhere else. If you want a great value on a scenic and challenging course, play here. You need every type of shot for the variety of holes and challenges. Some narrow holes, some aide holes, short par 4s brutal par 4s and even a "dogleg" par 3 if you play from the back. If you can play here, you can play anywhere. Walkable though back 9 is a tough walk.
Great Time
We like this course because it is dog friendly. Our small dog rides with us in the cart and loves being outdoors. The course is usually in good condition and it isn't crowded. They now have beer, wine and other drinks plus sandwiches. The folks that work the clubhouse are always very friendly and accommodating.
Great value for the money
I found the course to be easy to find and the course very fair and challenging the greens are very receptive and fast and true,a great value for the money.
Good bang for your buck
I've been golfing for 50 years and encountered a first during my round. Someone in a group ahead of us had their dog with them. It didn't appear to be a service dog, they just had it out for a walk during their round? This course is very rough. If you ride in a cart be aware of all the dips and holes throughout the course it can really jar you if you aren't paying attention. The back nine can be very difficult if you don't hit straight you will be looking for balls in the woods. This is an ok place to play if you are looking for an inexpensive place to bang the ball around but don't expect anything more.

A hidden gem -- and you can bring Fido
Excellent golf opportunity. Mid range challenges with more open front nine and more elevations on back nine. Course is in great condition this year -- much drier with drainage improvements made. Greens are very good.
Can walk or ride, with the added benefit of allowing dogs on leads to join the fun.
Nice
Wet on the course from early rain but the day had little rain.. No one else on course so we had it to ourselves. Improvements in design since I played a few years ago. Nice

Great day, fun course, Ill definitely be back. beautiful setting close to the ocean. We visit Port Townsend twice a year and I will make golfing here a priority each visit.
