Great convenient track for NYC locals
Booked an early morning round on a Wednesday to avoid pace issues. Course is in great shape especially for this time of year. Always enjoy coming here due to the convenient location and friendly staff. Not a long track but I wouldn't consider it walker friendly. Riding is advisable playing here due to the layout and design. Lunch was tasty and enjoyed eating outside on the rear porch overlooking Van Cortland Lake.
Can't Believe it's the Bronx!
I discovered VCP 2 years ago when my wife asked me why I kept driving to CT, where I used to live, to play. When she told me to try VCP, I laughed, but tried it.I thought it would be a cow pasture. It was a Fall day and I couldn't believe I was playing on a beautiful course, IN THE BRONX, no less,, with the most unbelievable colors of the trees and a well groomed course. I never have trouble booking a time and the staff if great. A great bargain, especially the senior rate of $33. And I can even take an easy subway ride from the Upper West Side. It is a hidden gem!
Great Golf in NYC
I've lived in New York all my life and have been playing golf for over 25 years. Most of the time, I drive North to courses that are well maintained and I can play in 3 1/2-4 hours. I knew of Van Cortlandt Park, but until this year, never played the course. I assumed it was an overcrowded city course that was beaten up by the number of rounds played there each year. Boy was I wrong. I've now played the course 6 or 7 times and have been amazed at how well maintained it is and the efficiency of the staff in moving play along. The course, itself, is in excellent condition and appeals to players of all levels. There haven't been any long waits like you might find at other public course...in fact, most times, I got out right on time. Overall, this course is a lot of fun to play. Already looking forward to playing it throughout the Fall.
Shotgun start after outing or tournament
Started on hole 4 @ 2pm. Very fast round, 3 1/2 hours. Felt rushed by the two players assigned to me and my son to make a foursome. No burgers or hot dogs at midway, should have eaten lunch beforehand. Really like the cheeseburgers they serve.
Course is in good condition. Greens could have been rolled better, tough to get a true roll.
Starter always friendly, pro shop were professional as usual.
Disjointed layout, nothing special
The clubhouse and the history are cool, but the course itself is quite basic with a very disjointed layout. The course is split into three sections with a parkway running through, which makes it a very difficult walk. There are a few nice holes in the middle and a couple at the end of the round with some big elevation changes. But mostly the holes are basically straight back and forth, with flat greens and tree-lined fairways.
Fair course
I've played the course before and pace was much better. My group and I stopped playing and left the course after taking 3.5 hours to play 11 holes. Rangers were literally useless, it appeared they were just driving around.
Very Disappointed!!!!! Should be issued a credit or replay.
Fairways and greens in very good conditions but wish it was better marked for distances with devices such as 150 yards marks more visible.
Carts do not have gps screens.
Overall it is an enjoyable course.
Convienent local track in NYC
It's been a couple years since I last played Vanny. Since then the clubhouse is finished and course conditions improved drastically. No pace issues due to an early tee time on a Friday. Playing here during the weekend, slow play is definitely a factor. The course is very popular amongst NYC players because it is reachable by subway. Teeboxes and fairways were definitely lush for NYC standards and greens although considered slow rolled pretty well. Over the years it's nice to see funds put into improvements on this track. Although not considered a long track, walking is a little awkward due to the course being separated in three different areas. Indeed golf course design has changed since 1895 but it's great for any golfer to play on America's first public course at least once. With the location convenience and friendly staff, any golfer would appreciate this track.
Played 9/15/17, beautiful conditions just like last time. Greens seemed a bit slower from a week prior. Early afternoon round stuck behind two slow foursomes. Total round at 5 hours and 5 minutes.
Played 9/10/17, beautiful weather and great conditions on a Sunday. Pace was surprisingly great with a 4 hour 15 minute round.
Best round in years
I booked a tee time at the last minute on a whim and shot 77. My best round in 27 years. A lot can be attributed to the good course conditions, especially the greens, which were slowed by the early rains but ran smoothly. As always the staff is great and I'm a fan of the clubhouse.
Pleasant Surprise
I never played this course before a week ago and I was surprised how well it was maintained. It was a fun course...especially the back 9. I look forward to playing it a lot more frequently this summer.
Best in town
This course has only gotten better with age. The course has slower greens but have plenty of slope to challenge any golfer. Always finish in 4hrs or less on a weekday. I steer clear of public golf on the weekends and you should as well. This is also the very first public golf course in the U.S.1895 which makes it a must play for any golf historian.
Tried & True
Van Cortland is so reliable and close to me it is my go to public course, although Skyway in Jersey City is making strong run at it for me and my playmates. The condition of Van Cortland is as good as it's ever been and I've been playing there for more than 20 years. Greens keepers are doing an amazing job. Other than what Robert Moses is responsible for, the course is great. I stay away on the weekends so pace of play is not an issue for me.
Very Nice Piece of Property!!! You dont realize you are in the city!!!
Nice course and well maintained, its short but some
holes play longer than they appear. Overall a pleasant
place to play, can get a little crowded at times!
The course is good
Good course poor communication with staff. Booked a tee time asked if any outing that day was told no then get to course had to wait because there was an outing. Tee off late then required to play with stranger who couldn't hit a softball if it was on the tee
I completely agree. It is a minimum of a 5 hour round. The golf shop always inserts other groups between tee times. I live in NYC and will never play this course because it's way too long. It's not a bad course layout, it just takes way too long.
