After half the groups had teed off and there was still 4 or 5 in front of us. And we were on time. Photo submitted by null on 09/25/2014
Van courtland
Other then being a little cold outside everything was quite good. Many tee times available course was in great shape and the price was great.
Great day.
First time playing here. Will definitely be back. Place was packed, totally booked, yet played 18 in 4 hrs.Pro shop guy was very friendly. Course was in good shape. It is still Feb. I think where they missed the boat was, the grill/ restaurant was not open. They could have made a lot of money. But it is only Feb. Looking forward to playing there again.
Not bad for the middle of February
Course was packed at 1pm when we teed off. There was still snow on the ground in spots. It was surprising how good the course was for this time of the year. Don't expect Augusta, but if you want a place to keep up your game while waiting for spring Vanny is perfect! I made 3 birdies on the bumpy greens and shot -1. Love the challenge of this short but formidable track.
for the oldest course around in great shape
mid-January golf in the northeast. what more could you ask for. considering it was cold the course was in good shape and a pleasure to play. with not many courses open in area, a little busy but still done in 4.5 hours.
Fun time in the Bronx
Although a cart was included in the price, we decided to walk. Except for 15-18 hills, the holes are relatively easy to walk. The course has 5 sections with grouped holes, and the walk between sections is long. It is the oldest public course in the US, but some holes had to be redone when the NY State Thruway was built in the 40s/50s. Thus the "sections". Enjoyable course with fairways in good shape, greens a bit bumpy but to be expected at this time of the year with freezes and defrosting.
Good conditions, Interesting Layout - Bad pace of play and unfriendly pro shop employee
After making the move to NYC and living on the upper west side Van Cortlandt is the only golf course I can easily get to in under an hour without a car. I have played it several times now. The first time I showed up I was excited to play a track with so much history but was frustrated from the beginning. I showed up an hour early hoping to putt and chip before my round and was told by the pro shop employee - Show up closer to your tee time next time, we don't do that here. So, I sat around for an hour and then had a relatively enjoyable round but was still annoyed at that comment. The next couple of times I played I met other staff in the pro shop and they were all very pleasant but as I keep going back every single time the rude staff member is in the proshop I am put in a bad mood due to his rudeness in every interaction we have. At this point I have had enough. I like to play often and this is literally the only course I can get to in a reasonable amount of time but at this point I will make the hour and a half trek to other courses.
Pace of play is a nightmare here as well.
That being said, for a public course with a high amount of traffic the course has been in fantastic shape every time I have played it and my only complaints have been the sprinklers randomly going off on a green while you are trying to putt.
this course is very popular in the area , but management don't take care properly
this course needs more care and more signaling
One of the Best
The best old time golf experience
In the New York area.
Better than ever
The course has been improved but it is still slow. Wait on first tee was 45 minutes after posted time. The course conditions were very good. The putting service was good but slow.
Terrible course
Boring course, took 5+ hours to play, had a 9:45 tee time, didn't tee off until 10:15, the staff was not helpful or friendly and for the price they charge I wouldn't recommend playing here unless it's the last course on earth. Horrible time.
In great shape
Yes the greens are still kinda slow, but Vanny is in great shape right now. Played a nice 4 hour round (it was a weekday) without having to wait or feeling rushed. You gotta love how you have 3 opportunities to pass the food/drink hut. This course used to be a dump a few years ago but has been getting better and better the past few years.
Greens Are Too Slow, Pin Placement Stinks
I want to be fair since it's a city course. So if you're a resident like me and can't get out to a better course, VCP works well enough on a weekday afternoon. But I couldn't imagine getting stuck out here on a weekend in a 6 hour round. It's a really short course with no real challenges. I can appreciate the history so it's worth a play maybe once. But I wouldn't recommend it to an experienced golfer with hopes of great views and interesting hole placement. Every green is slow, round, and you can bet the hole has been somewhat damaged by previous golfers. It's an easy train ride though off the 1, so no real reason not to give it a try.
Excellent local track, able to commute via NYC public transportation
With one of the first groups out on a Tuesday morning, pace was quick at 3 hrs 40 minutes. Previously play on the 4th of July and the course conditions are still better than decent considering the amount of play this track gets. I enjoy this place because holes are classic designed. Not a walker friendly track so golf cart is a must. For NYC residents that do not own a vehicle, this place is popular because it's reachable by subway. Just like my last review, its nice to see funds we put in the new clubhouse and course.
Good Course Near the City
The course has some unique history being the oldest public course in America. The layout isn't anything special but the conditions are good. The greens are in great shape but roll extremely slow. If they can cut it a bit shorter, it would be more enjoyable. A good option if you need something close to the city.
Pleasant 4th of July round
Conditions and pace was great. Finished the round in 4hour 20 minutes on a holiday. Nice to see the renovated club house finished. Last time I played here (couple years ago), it was night and day compared to today. Glad to see funds were put in to improve this track.
Outstanding Links!
"Vannie" is a great, challenging track for all golfers. The playing conditions are outstanding showing the results of excellent course maintenance. Grab your sticks, get on your car or get on the subway - you will not be disappointed!
Holiday weekend golf
While this is New York and a holiday weekend the Rangers could have moved the course of play along.
A Bronx Jewel
I've played this course since 1981, and it's never been better. The fairways are in excellent shape, and the greens are as good as I've seen them. It's got some quirky holes but it's got history and great vistas.
