Clifton Highlands Golf Course
About
Clifton Highlands Golf Club, just north of Prescott, enjoys a scenic location overlooking the St. Croix River Valley. The club offers a championship 18-hole course as well as a par-3 course. Dr. Gordon Emerson, Wisconsin's most prolific course designer, designed the Championship Course. He considered it some of his best work. The golf course has enough diversity to appeal to both low and high handicappers. The layout is fairly tight with mature trees framing many of the holes. The undulating greens and fairways are meticulously maintained. A combination of water and sand comes into play, providing a fair amount of challenges without being too punishing. In addition to the 27 holes, Clifton Highlands G.C. also has a driving range and practice greens that are adjacent to the first tees of both golf courses.

Green Are Too Undulating
Given the course slope and rating the greens seem too tough. Having to be underneath the pin on every hole seems ridiculous in this era of golf. Expect many more 3 putts than normal for that yardage and handicap rating.
Nice course
The course was in good shape. Large, tricky greens.
great value
The course was in excellent shape, what a great price for this type of course.
Beautiful course!
This course is well maintained and very scenic. We had a great time playing this course. We will go back many times!!
Excellent Course
Playing this course was an excellent experience. The course was in magnificent condition and the staff was kind and friendly. I would play it again without hesitation.
Nice course
Very nice course for the money would diffently play again
COMFORTABLE TRACK
COURSE IS ALWAYS IN NICE SHAPE, SOMEWHAT CHALLENGING, BUT FAIR,
Clifton Highlands
Great course, nice track, in excellent condition. Played this course several time and pace of play has been very good to excellent.
Coarse is in great shape.
First time I have played this coarse and the layout is a little confusing but staff was very helpful. Speed was good. Finished in 3 hours as a single. Started a 12:40.
Poor staff reaction to a legitimate complaint
The course is very fine and the price is very reasonable. We would like to play it again. But we ran into a difficulty. On the third hole we, a twosome, ran into a fivesome, who had no one ahead of them. We were surprised: very rare does a course allow a fivesome. But I said to my companion, "They surely will let us through." But they didn't. So we waited on holes 4, 5, and 6--on every shot. At the sixth green, a young woman driving the food cart came up. We asked her, "Are fivesomes allowed on this course?" She answered, "Oh, they're members; and yes, they can play as five." We said, "But aren't they instructed to let a faster twosome play through?" She said, "I'll tell the club manager. Maybe he will send a ranger out." I said, "Thank-you. We really like the course, but we don't want to wait on every shot behind a fivesome. We are new at this course: it will cost the course money if we don't come back because of slow play." We did not blame her for the problem; we did not ask her to solve the problem. We were irritated, but we were not irritated at her, but at the situation. She drove off.
On the sixth hole the club manager drove up in a cart. He was very irritated with us. He accused us of mistreating the food cart driver. In addition, he said, "You don't know the rules of golf. As a twosome you have no preference over a fivesome. Besides, these five are fast players." We said, "We are playing faster that they are. They should let us through."
He said, "The food cart girl said you don't like the course. I will refund your fee and you can leave the course." We said, "We like the course. We would like to come here again, but we don't think we should have to wait on every shot behind a fivesome." He said, "I will go up and ask if they would be willing to let you through. They could do so after the ninth hole. If they wish." Well, as it happened they let us through on hole 7. We thanked them. They did not respond to our thanks.
Within a half hour we were almost 4 holes ahead of them (from the 13th hole we saw them going down 10th hole).
We found the whole matter disconcerting. It is clear that at this course there is a members' privilege that allows them to play a fivesome. It is further clear that a members' fivesome feels under no obligation to follow well-establised golf etiquette and let a faster twosome go through. It is further clear that the club manager supports this members' privilege, even in the face of unmistakable evidence that the twosome is moving faster. And finally, at this course, a complaint like ours is treated as trivial and unwarranted, indeed, as proof that we, the twosome, do not know the rules of golf!
The members who insist on this privilege, the club that allows it, and the manager that backs it so as to disfavor nonmembers, are making a serious business mistake.
Sad. We liked the course!
Great value
C.H. is perhaps the best value (price, condition, pace of play, etc.) in SE metro. Also very walkable. Course is straight forward. Greens & fairways in great condition & you can play out of the rough. Course would be considered easy if it weren't for the greens (lots of contour & slope). Some are impossible to hold your chip or putt if you are above the hole (depending on pin location). Stay below the hole on your approach.
Pleasant surprise
This was a very fun and fair course. If it's your first time playing, it would benefit you greatly to have someone who knows the course go with you. Fortunately I paired up with some members who helped show me where to hit the ball. I felt this course was in as good a condition as any top notch course I've played this year. Greens were a bit slow, but in very nice shape. Fairways were in great shape, also. If you're in the area, would highly recommend trying Clifton Highlands out. You won't be disappointed.
Hidden gem
Was not expecting too much. Boy was I wrong. Some of the best conditions I have ever played on. Superior to many private clubs. Greens were fun, fast, and perfectly manicured.
Not the toughest course but, an incredible value.
Challenging Layout-issue with greens
Clifton Highlands is a well laid out course with one serious shortcoming. The greens are difficult to read because of the various undulations and difficulty of staying on once hit. I hit numerous shots close to the pin only to have the ball bounced to a unpredictable position.. The course from tee to green was enjoyable, but, for anyone counting on their chipping and putting to provide ian advantage will be disappointed.
Nice course, no frills
If you want to play a nice course with no waiting, this place is great. No gps on carts and bring cash if you want any food or drink, don't take cards.
Solid Course, Can back up big time when busy
Overall Clifton Highlands is a solid course and is in good shape. The greens are in good shape and the overall course is a mature with a nice challenging design. There's a few extra opportunities (besides at the turn) for players to hit club house and grab a beverage or food, which impacts the pace of play. I would recommend it as a value course, however its not in my favorites. I was recommended Clifton Highlands over Clifton Hallow, however after playing the two I would say I prefer Hallow.
Quite a challenge.
The greens. The course was in great shape, but those greens are challenging. Don't go over any holes! Some of the trees have grown and make it difficult to approach some holes, even from the fairway. Putting from the wrong side of many holes is very challenging, and the greens are huge and undulating.
I would like to return to play the course again.
The golf course is interesting with nice views of the surrounding countryside and well maintained, with one exception. The greens had been punched and top dressed, so were not in good condition on the day we played. Had we been aware of the green conditions, we likely would have played elsewhere.
Play was not heavy at the time we played, and the pace of play was excellent.
Diabolical greens!
This well maintained course has some of the toughest greens I've ever played! Approach shots must be hit perfectly for any chance at a two-putt. The over all length is rather short, but you'll have your hands full with the flat stick, for sure.
Great course but play was slow
Golf course was in great shape golf carts were very clean and the club house was very neat and clean we would definitely play this course again it was a great bargin
