Clifton Highlands Golf Course
About
Clifton Highlands Golf Club, just north of Prescott, enjoys a scenic location overlooking the St. Croix River Valley. The club offers a championship 18-hole course as well as a par-3 course. Dr. Gordon Emerson, Wisconsin's most prolific course designer, designed the Championship Course. He considered it some of his best work. The golf course has enough diversity to appeal to both low and high handicappers. The layout is fairly tight with mature trees framing many of the holes. The undulating greens and fairways are meticulously maintained. A combination of water and sand comes into play, providing a fair amount of challenges without being too punishing. In addition to the 27 holes, Clifton Highlands G.C. also has a driving range and practice greens that are adjacent to the first tees of both golf courses.

always tough to score
beautifully maintained w/ the best fairways I've played this year (my 8th round)...speedy, undulating greens make for tough chipping & testy putting...hard 90* doglegs on #8, 11, & 12 will take some getting used to... played behind a 4-some of first-timers & the greens wore 'em out!
A surprisingly challenging but fair course, in excellent condition and fun to play.
The course was in great condition, well manicured. The fairways are plenty wide and the rough wasn't much of an issue. It's a mature course with tree-lined fairways but it's open under the trees so finding your ball in many cases wasn't an issue. There is some OB, some water and some more densely forested areas but overall it's not too tight. The greens are very large with a LOT of slope in most cases; it's very important to position yourself below the hole. Greens were quick but reasonable. A mix of longer holes and shorter ones. Very much a strategic course where you can shoot well if you think your way around; or you can shoot much higher if you don't! Sand was good in the traps, too. Overall it's a bargain and a gem of a course.
Nice course for the money
Was ignored at the pro shop, as attendant was talking on the cell. Barely made it to the tee on time. Bad feeling to rush to the first shot. Fairways were in great shape. Fun course to play. Less expensive than MN courses.
Greens were the best I've played on this year.
Clifton Highland's is always in great shape and is playable for every level of player. The fairways are tree lined so if your tee shot strays you may be punching out and taking your medicine. I played the course with my wife who is a high handicapper and she was thrilled to get 4 pars on the back nine, including the par 5 #18 . I can't remember the last time she made par on a par 5.
Great day on some of the toughest greens in the region
It had been a decade since my last trip around Clifton Highlands. The course was in top notch shape and the pace of play was great. I brought my 12 year old son along and the great deal made it very cost effective. The staff from the pro shop to the bar/grille were extremely cordial, adding to the pleasant experience
Worth the Drive
Course/greens are not flat so on almost everything but your drive the ball will be above/below your feet if you're in the fairway. Greens are in great shape and roll true. Fast enough to be challenging but not too fast that you can't control the ball.
Fairways are mostly tree lined so be prepared to hit your tee shots straight.
The course has a great senior rate that makes the drive from Minneapolis a good value. Most of the fairways are tree lined but you can still find your ball when you stray. Fairways and greens are in top shape. Personal GPS recommended as fairway yardage makers are scarce. 1/2 a mile of gravel road to club house so plan on a car wash when you're done. Pace of play was okay.
Every hole had a different layout, fun to play
Was our first time playing this course. Would play it again having played it. Alway hard playing a new course and not knowing how to play the course and what to use for each shot.
How we play some holes would be different with what we used in club choice.
great shape for the winter we had.
Always enjoy the course and staff. A little slow the day of play due to member appreciation day but, free lunch off the grill was delicious.
Many narrow dogleggs that allow you to take a shot at cutting them
Staff was very friendly from the pro shop when we checked in, to the starter to send us off. It was the second day the course was open for the season, but everything was very well groomed. There were no leaves or pine needles, under the trees off the fairways, allowing chances to make par after stray first round shots. I will definitely go back for more rounds this year. Might even look into membership next year.
Great layout and fast greens...even though it was a bit wet out.
Couldn't be more pleased with the course...I hope to get a corporate membership next year.
always in great shape. Shorter holes well protected by design
This course is off the beaten path but well worth the drive, as it always seems to be in great shape. Its shorter length is decieving as the short holes are protected by either tight landing areas for drives, big dog legs, or smaller undulating greens sometimes 2 of preceeding. Friendly staff and very reasonable rates. I golf on weekdays and got around in 2:45 as it is usually not crowded at all. dont know about weekends.
