Grey Hawk Golf Club
About
Grey Hawk Golf Club is a challenging but playable course that is a Cleveland area favorite. It brings resort-quality golf to a remote location in LaGrange that is seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The rolling landscape is the ideal terrain for links-style golf. The course demands accuracy with lightning fast greens surrounded by bunkers and be sure not to stray from the fairways or you'll almost definitely be left with an uneven lie. Unlike a typical links golf course, there are water hazards coming into play on several holes on this layout. The 11th hole features a tricky island green while the third hole has an equally challenging "island green" that is surrounded by sand. Grey Hawk Golf Club is a formidable but fair test with interesting and diverse hole designs.

I pray to GiR #11 Island Green Photo submitted by DAB4par on 08/15/2017
Great course. Very fun and challenging.
Played the course for the first time today. Due to recent rain it was pretty wet. Because of that it was cart path only. If you play with it cart path only be sure to keep track of where your ball is off the tee. There are a lot of mounds between the cart path and fairways making it very hard to see where your ball i . The par 3 11th is a very cool hole with ano island green. Overall the course is outstanding and I can't wait to play it again.
Course is falling apart
I know it's early in the season but I've played other courses this spring like Thunderbird, Mohican, and even Forrest Hills, and they are in great shape in comparison. This course is in trouble. I'm guessing money problems have led to issues maintaining the course. Greens horrible, fairways, bunkers, etc, all terrible. This used to be an awesome course but it just keeps going down hill. Too bad. (I don't remember the exact date we played but it was a couple weeks ago.)
Nice and challenging
Weather was great, course was in good condition for December, people were friendly, definitely a course where you need to be strategic with your misses.
The times, They are a changing.
In the begining, Grey Hawk was excellent in every way a golf course could be. The lack of care has taken a toll. If this course falls by the wayside, like Blue Heron, I will miss it more. The layout is in the top 10 of northeast Ohio, in my opinion.
Not What it Once Was
Grey Hawk was designed by the Von Hagge group. It was an amazing transformation from flat farmland to a challenging links style course. The bunkering was phenomenal, water comes into play on quite a few holes. Hole numbers 7&8 can be card wreckers. If I could routinely play them @ + 2, I would be a happy man. I've birdied 7 twice, but more often than naught, I've doubled it. Nonetheless, the layout is a nice variety of looks and terrain. Here's the bad news...since originally built as a private club, it went onto hard financial times. I know that there has been more than one owner and it's been a daily fee course for a number of years. That was actually a good thing until they basically stopped maintaining the extensive bunkers. Some have been allowed to grow over and become grass bunkers. The ones that are left are basically dirt with a sprinkling of sand that gets dragged by a four wheeler every now and then. The long bunker that runs along the right side of the 18th fairway and green has been allowed to grow wild weeds and crabgrass and is now a "waste bunker". The overall maintenance has deteriorated dramatically, and is really a shame because the layout is/was fantastic. Oh, and the greens that were once lightning and tricky to read, are now pretty pedestrian #maybe 8 to 8-1/2?) and bumpy.
needs more water
course was bone dry and rough around the edges, need to water
Great course fantastic layout super club house,Ohio's dry summer did some damage.
Grey Hawk is a grea course lots of water and not one but two island greens one in the water and one in the sand. We drove over an hour to play this golf course and we have now done that twice. The dry weather this year was not friendly to this course, not much shade out there. The course uses water and sand to line fairways that do not have trees, it really makes for a great challenging round of golf. I love this course!!!!! We look forward to playing Grey Hawk again.
Nice Course for the Fall
Played here a few times, once in the spring when conditions were a little rough around the edges. Some things still aren't great (most of the sand has not been maintained well enough to consider playable) - but overall the shape was decent.
The course provides a good test and the links style makes it nice to play in the fall when you don't have to search through leaves for a ball not the fairway.
As the other review mentioned, they did aerate the greens recently - which every course is currently doing - and I think that $30 still presents a good value with that in mind.
Played as a two some on a weekday and only had to play through one group (who was very nice about it). Range is nice as well and overall facilities are good. The only negative for me is the state of the sand.
Like The Course
The second time we have played this course. The fairways were green but the course had just been aerated the past week so the greens were rough. I thought the price they were charging should of been even lower since the greens were in such bad shape.
course needs lots of work
the golf course was in terrible shape, the weather has been great for the past month. thanks golfnow for deals you offer, I would never pay full green fee to golf here. last year after hearing how great the course is I booked a golfnow tee time last Oct. a wet Fall last year, even with the golf course being wet the course look great and played well. fairways were well maintained and greens were smooth (ball rolled true). pace of play was good, no holdups. I decide to play this year in dry conditions, mistake, even though the price was good thanks to golfnow, I am not an expert on how to maintain a golf course, but I due take care of my own lawn. large patches of grass missing on most fairways, black ball marks all over all the greens (no grass growing on old ball marks). pace of play, we skipped the last three holes. we caught up two golfers on tee 12. we notice they did not tee off until the foursome walked off the green. then they looked for lost golf balls along the way.we asked twice if we could play through, no answer. we quite after 15 holes. courtesy they lack. we complained to (different person) the man at the counter. I let him tell what he wanted to, then I said "a ranger would help alleviate some problems". it seems that the clubhouse is the showcase and not the golf course.
On decline
I use to love this course but it seems to be on the decline. It just isn't as nice as it used to be and seems to be neglected. The greens and the sand traps needed some TLC. I would only recommend this course if you can get a rate deal.
Apology review
I needed to apologize to the front desk at Grey Hawk. Although just last week said "no more" I begruglingly played it today with my neighbor ($14/ea with promo code!!) and it was a delightful 18 holes!! Perfect weather, great pace (less than 3.5 hrs) and the course was in nice shape (except "waste" bunkers). Doesn't hurt that I shot 38 on the back. :) Staff even called me tonight to say the found my missing driver head cover!
I was upset last week and still feel Golfnow's Hot deals are risky if you have non-rain raincheck needs (infrequent but possible). But Grey Hawk folks and facility are great vakue at Golfnow's discounts.
Beware of hot deals and the possible need for rain checks.
Just got back from horrible experience here. My adult son and I were told front 9 was wide open so we teed off a few min early only to find very slow threesome on 1st green (even greenskeeper didn;t know where they came from). They finally let us begrunglingly play through on 4 but then ran into single on nine who was fishing balls out of lake for 5 minutes, unaware of us on the tee (even though we yelled fore a few times and son hit drive far left of him). I hit near lake and yelled "fore" but upon approach he had words with us and told my son I had bad golf etiquette (yet admitted to trolling for water balls and never saw us on tee). We were upset at the whole un-supervised nine hole expereince and asked at desk for raincheck. They said no because we had paid through Golfnow! A customer-friendly approach would be to give us 9 hole rainchecks regardless (as Golfnow funds will eventually funnel there).
Hot deal (as in hot under the collar).
BTW, bunkers were void of sand (more like waste areas), and greens were pretty beat up. Even though we were regulars there, we are done (and told them so...like they care). Bye Grey Hawk. Life is too short to be dealing with this.
Ted
P.S. Range is still nicest feature of property; good grass tees.
Burned out fairways and greens that needed work
This course was one of the best...now it needs a lot of work
Great Layout
This is a very good layout with challenging holes. Not in as good condition as usual. Showing signs of stress from the weather. Greens are very good
glad i got it cheap
nice layout but that's it. fairways dry and cracking up greens were bumpy and those sands traps are like cement. if a course is going to have traps, try maintaining them
Horrible experience
We double booked tee times for a bachelor party of 6 guys. We were rushed thru each home by rangers because , and I quote " the guys behind you are regulars and okay here all the time and play really fast". We were actually playing ahead of schedule but we were being rushed. They were verbally rude. We called the next day to complain and the female I spoke with kept interrupting me and wouldn't let me speak as soon as she realized it was a complaint. Also THERE IS NO SAND IN THE SAND TRAPS! Horrible experience -very rude staff and horrible course itself. Way overpriced
Terrible staff and fairways
We booked earlier this week a double tee time for 6 people and were not told about a golf outing. Initially we were told we needed to be on hole 6 by a set time no issue which we did. After that the ranger was on us every hole even though we were playing faster than pace. Also the fairways were garbage and not maintenanced. I will not be back.
Always a good day at Grey Hawk
Grey Hawk is always a good course to play. Yeah they are letting the course go a bit. Lots of divots and ball marks, and the sand is now hardpan but that doesn't matter. The layout is great and challenging. I wish they had 100 yard markers. It's a return destination year after year.
Disappointed
For years this course had always been one of my favorites and would drive almost an hour to play. No more. The course is in horrible shape. Greens are pocked up, tees are divot ridden, and fairways are barren. Simply inexcusable. So sad.
