Grey Hawk Golf Club
About
Grey Hawk Golf Club is a challenging but playable course that is a Cleveland area favorite. It brings resort-quality golf to a remote location in LaGrange that is seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The rolling landscape is the ideal terrain for links-style golf. The course demands accuracy with lightning fast greens surrounded by bunkers and be sure not to stray from the fairways or you'll almost definitely be left with an uneven lie. Unlike a typical links golf course, there are water hazards coming into play on several holes on this layout. The 11th hole features a tricky island green while the third hole has an equally challenging "island green" that is surrounded by sand. Grey Hawk Golf Club is a formidable but fair test with interesting and diverse hole designs.

wonderful day playing golf
I would recommend good value for your money. it was a beautiful day. And my golf game was even better than normal. ALso a wonderful terrace with a view to enjoy after your game.
Fading away
Fabulous track in need of a cash infusion. Bunkers becoming overgrown weeds sprouting up every where, greens declining. The darn trains rolling through are pretty annoying. This grande concept of a golf course in the middle of no where is dying a slow death.
Great course, great challenge!!
This is one of the most fun courses around in my opinion. It is really hard, specifically 7,8, & 9. But with two true island greens (one sand and the other water). It's long, lots of water and sand. And there is always good deals to be had.
Great Potential
This course has the makings to be great. Unfortunately, it is either too young or they are having money issues. The layout is one of the best and most challenging that I have played. The holes are all different and it honestly felt like we played several different courses. The condition was disappointing. Bunkers were not maintained, fairways were filled with weeds and not mowed down - the greens were not too bad, but far from perfect.
If they put a year of hard work into this place, it would be a really great track. Regardless, I feel like the price was fair for what it is.
Tough to rate...
Played with a buddy in the middle of day on a holiday. Round was slow, but was to be expected playing as a twosome.
The course appears to be making a comeback, but still has a lot of work to do. Multiple bunkers are nearly unplayable, which wasn't the case 2 years ago. The greens were really chewed up. They seemed to have been aerated within the last three weeks or so, but it's more than that. They rolled relatively true despite the appearance. The other issue besides the bunkers and greens was just the general condition of the outlying areas. I understand letting some of that go due to cost and water conservation, but multiple areas are infested with weeds and it's in playable parts of the course. Tee boxes also needed cut.
Overall, the layout is one of the best around, but hope condition improves. Worth the drive to play a challenging and wonderful layout. Just don't expect too much from a conditioning standpoint.
Very good course and value, cart attendant a bit frosty
I played Grey Hawk years ago, and honestly forgot how nice it was. It's 'almost' like being on vacation with several holes very well sculpted and unique. I'll def. be back.
One problem that was disappointing,... when I arrived and paid for 18 and a cart around 5-530 the person at the counter was friendly. He gave me a cart key and told me to enjoy the round.
The pace was a touch slow due to weather, but not bad. When I briefly stopped at the clubhouse around 7:30 to make the turn, a crabby cart attendant said 'YOU'RE GOING BACK OUT?'. I brushed it off and said 'yes, I paid for 18'. He then barked 'CARTS HAVE TO BE BACK IN BY 8:15'
Um, not cool. There was no way I could finish the back 9 in time (even though there was plenty of daylight at 8:15 to keep going) so I only played a few more holes and turned my cart in. I lost out on half a round after driving 45 minutes to get here.
The lady in the restaurant was sympathetic when she asked how my round was and said the cart attendant should never have told me to get back in by 8:15. 'People golf after 8:15 all the time, and when they are finished they leave the cart near the garage'. So, I'm not one to kill a place forever for one bad experience, but in this case a cart attendant in a hurry gave my experience a bit of a bad taste.
As I said though, I'll still be back. I'll bring that guy a cupcake maybe it will cheer him up.
Oh, the clubhouse and restaurant are darn good. = )
Disappointed
Some holes don' t even make sense. Dandelions everywhere, aerated greens, way to pricey for the conditions!!! The island hole was fantastic, but the lone highlight. Extremely challenging for the weekend golfer. It almost felt like it was designed for pro's but then they just quit building it.
Enjoyed
Nice welmaintained . Staff were friendly . enjoyed very much . will play again
The course is challenging.
The course has some really nice aspects but the greens need attention.
Challenging course with well placed water and sand.
Course was in surprisingly good condition for mid-April with the long winter we had. Didn't have ball washers or trash containers at enough holes but maybe that has changed. Our foursome paid 32.00 each as winter rates were still in effect. Very challenging and cant wait to play in the coming months when the course should be in even better condition.
Greens are excellent
Course drains very well. Greens are smooth and fast considering all the rain we had that day. Great layout.
unprofessional ranger
Starter had no idea what was going on. Ranger was very rude and disrespectful. Clubhouse staff was friendly. I golf here several times every year but will not golf here again due to unfavorable experience. Was criticized by staff for playing a solo round and being put between groups (starter's idea).
Great shape for the time of year!
Course is in great shape for this time of year! The greens were in very good shape. The staff has always been outstanding at this course.
Hold on to your hat when you get to no. 7,8 and 9! tough holes, bring your "A" game for those three!
Great course
got an excellent deal on Golfnow.com for a course of this caliber. the course was in great shape but very wet due to the rain that came overnight and made it a little tougher to play. only complaint was the 20 minutes it took to get a hot dog and then the bun was burnt. other than that it was a great experience.
Great layout; course needs improvement
The layout of this course is challenging and each hole has its own character. For the winter we've had, the greens were in decent shape. But over the years, the maintenance of the overall course has steadily declined. I will return because I enjoy the challenge, but wish the maintenance crew would get it up to the 5 star rating a great layout deserves.
One of the best in west of Cleveland
It's flat, cuz it in west of Cleveland, but one of the tough one. a lots of water. 7th 8th 9th are always tough, if you play good on these holes, your score will be pretty good on most case. Then you have to be good on 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th - every hole involve Water. It could be easy par or easy double par,
Better than last year ..
Course in good shape .. was very windy 30-40mph .. hopefully they water this summer and don't let the place burn out in June/July
Great course. Play the white tees in the wind.
Would have gave 5 stars but greens need a haircut and pins need changing. Awesome course, and nobody in our 4 some lost a ball in the leaves. Very few leaves to deal with this time of year at grey hawk!!!
Very windy there, dress warm!!!!
Grey Hawk is becoming my favorite course on the west side of Cleveland
I kept hearing about Grey Hawk from random people I've played with over the past year. I finally decided to give it a shot, and the course is awesome! I've only been playing for about a year, so it was very challenging, but not enough that I wanted to leave my clubs in one of the hazards. It is a gorgeous course. Don't let the fact it is pretty open fool you, there is still plenty of places to lose a ball ha. advice: on the island green, whatever club you usually use to hit the distance, drop at least 1 club if not 2. The wind will catch it once it is in the air.
I played May 25th and there was no dandelions out there and they greens were back to normal. I doubt the conditions will every be perfect, but the price and conditions are better at Grey Hawk than most of the other courses in the area.
