Berkshire Valley has a scenic location in the Highlands region of northern New Jersey. It is known as one of best public golf courses in the area. The course is perched atop the ridge of Green Pond Mountain, providing a dramatic topography for a challenging round of golf. The front of the golf course was carefully carved from a hillside, featuring narrow fairways that place a premium on accuracy. The first five holes are particularly scenic as well as formidable. There are some open holes that play along the cliffs, subjecting them to the prevailing winds, one of these is the intimidating par-5 third. The Berkshire Valley golf course finishes with its signature hole. This hole can be deceiving since it has a generous fairway, but the second shot is uphill to a tough green.

Must play

My friend and I played a very early round and only had one guy in front of us. So our round was played at the pace we like. The first four holes are the hardest on the course running along the ridge of a hill. After that it opens up. The course was in impeccable shape and was a joy to play. The par threes are very challenging all of which being 200 plus from the skins. Over all it's a great place to play, the view is awesome from the top holes. I recommend it to anyone who is somewhat of an experienced golfer.

Decent for August

I've played this course a handful of times before but this course never seems to get any easier. The course was in decent condition for August some of the tee boxes were being worked on so it shortened the course by a good 500 yards give or take. The greens were not rolling as true as I have seen in the past but all in all its a good course and worth playing any chance you get.

Gorgeous County course

Built on the side of a mountAin the views are fabulous. Bears can be seen crossing fairways. Greens are not true.

Greens were unusually fast for this course due to sand application for aeration

Beautiful day, a bit more challenging than usual for this course, due to sand on greens; we were offered a discount due to the aeration on the greens which caused some undulation. This was a very business-savvy decision. Koodos to the staff for that!

Great elements

Varied options on holes makes it interesting - elevation changes, water hazards, straight holes and doglegs. Challenging, yet fair. Greens are diabolical, but fair. Some local
knowledge required - play it once to know carries and target lines.

Berkshire Valley

I joined a 3-some for this round and played from the white tees in an attempt to keep our pace of play reasonable. It was a picture perfect golf day (full sun / 71 degrees / very low humidity) and the course was very full. I do not recall seeing a ranger at any time during the round. I have played there a number of time and always enjoyed the layout and degree of difficulty as you move to tees further back. The course is generally in good condition, although there were numerous bald spots on fairways (they seemed to have been cut too short) and a few greens were littered with significant amounts of goose dropping, However in spite of these issues I would recommend Berkshire Valley.

Ccourse in great shape, white tees TERRIBLE!

The majority of the course was in great shape, unfortunately the white men's tees were abominable. Most had very little grass at all, apparently due to the extremely hot conditions in the past few weeks. What a shame.

Hard for beginners.

Cannot stop by the club house after the 9th hole. But overall nice courses. First 9hole is difficult.

Nice course, fun and fair layout

The course has a nice layout, with few blind shots. Open fairways with some tee shots that make you consider how much to bite off. THe greens were scuffed up by players dragging their feet, but that is common on public facilities. Lots of bail out options that challenge your pitch and chip skills.

I like courses that put a stripped stick in the middle of the fairway to give first time players a line and distance.

Great practice facility that allows work on all aspects of your game.

Great course worth playing

I play this course 1x per week after work. It's only $23 to ride 18 after 5PM. At this time of year, I usually get all 18 holes in before 8:30PM. Great value for the money. The course is challenging -- especially the first two holes. You're up on top of a ridge and the wind is usually blowing which makes for a very difficult tee shot. After that, it opens up a bit and becomes a little easier. Carefully placed shots are still a requirement if you plan on scoring well. Nicely maintained course and friendly staff.

Great layout and views!

This was the first time playing Berkshire valley. It is quiet intimidating, but you once you start playing it is a lot of fun. The driver needs to be straight and the putter needs to be on and you can score. Go play this course, you will enjoy in its entirety.

One of the best places to play in New Jersey

If you can't get to Ireland, Ballyoween is the next best thing. This is a great course but it's very difficulty. This course was a pleasure to play but it would be torture for many people. This course is not for everyone. It is very challenging, but for people who desire this kind of course, it will offer everything that a person could ever want. The course is wide open without trees but there are other places to get into trouble. The entire course was in great condition. The greens were tricky but fair. The golfnow, com prices vary. It is a great experience at full price but there are always deals on this discount site. This was one of the best places I have played in New Jersey.

Strong Rulewich course

The first four holes are daunting, once you get through them it's a fun track to play through. Conditions were good, hot day so there were no issues with waiting for slow foursomes. Definitely recommend for a challenging round, will return again this summer.

beautiful county course, cart policy if it is a policy is bs though

everything was great except that i guess because of cheapness, my threesome got stuck with a single. i understand that happens in golf on a busy day but on a day hardly anyone is playing, and a single went out on his own probably 20 minutes after us, why couldn't he go on his own? ruined our day. he wasn't overly friendly, was a very good golfer, and seemed to look down on us because we are 90s type golfers. the guy hit a bad tee shot ob on 18 and actually once he got near the green with my friend in his cart, took his bag and walked off the course! didn't even finish his round and shake our hands, only the guy he rode with. very uncomfortable. i will not be back unless i have my own foursome which is a shame
