Sunset Valley Golf Course

About
Sunset Valley Golf Course is consistently ranked as one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is one of four golf courses in the Morris County Parks system and it's considered the toughest. Located in Pompton Plains, the course is nestled in a wooded valley. It has a dramatic topography that provides plenty of ups and downs throughout the golf course. Golfers can expect a variety of elevation changes as well as a few blind shots and forced carries. Strategically placed bunkers come into play along the fast, undulating greens and mature trees line the rolling fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes too. Sunset Valley Golf Course's final three holes present one of the area's toughest finishes. The trio begins with the uphill par-5 16th and then finishes with two long par 4s.

Extremely Rude Starters
I got to the course at 11:40am for a 11:50am tee time. I understand that's not ideal timing but things happens and I got there before my tee time. The starter walked out to the parking lot to hurry me up and then was extremely rude to me. He felt the need to explain to me that I should have already been on the 1st tee box and that I should have arrived 20 mins early. As the last person of staff that you see before you start your round, I don't think there is any harm in being kind and friendly before you send someone off. This is not the only starter that is extremely rude, there is another woman and she has a TERRIBLE attitude. On top of all of this, the green slopes are insane, most of the fairways are dirt and the tee boxes are the worst!! This course used to be great and friendly but now they are overcharging for the customer service and overall play.
Challenging muni course
If you live in Morris County, do yourself a favor and pick a county card. The normal 90+ they charge here exceeds the quality of the course. The woman inside the pro shop who checks you in is always very friendly. I’ve had some weird experiences with the starters here. (If you’ve been here, you know the guy). Overall though, it is a solid local option with an interesting layout and some tough greens. You can’t really hack your way around this one. My one real complaint is that the pace can be very slow at times. Not sure if it’s overbooking or just people not playing ready golf. But, I’ve had a few 5 hour rounds here.
Enjoyable experience
One of those courses - after playing the first tone, you want to go back out and play it again
Friendly and challenging course.
Course was unfortunately very brown due to lack of rain. The surface was very hard creating unusual bounces.
Overpriced course for what you get
Rocks everywhere, and I mean everywhere. A great place to destroy a nice set of clubs.
Tee boxes were mix and match some good others not so great. Greens were the worst I have seen around north jersey. Zero divet fixes, odd pin placement and greens are either super fast or super slow.
Sand traps dont have enough rakes as mentioned by other reviewers. The one thing that makes me not want to return is the other golfers on this course. Other players will steal your ball constantly causing you to have to drop balls or lose them, pick up your ball and walk off with it. Just not a great experience overall. I wont be returning to this course. There are soooooo many other better options for the 80$
Sunset Valley - Summer 2025
A great course that allows you to use every club in your bag.
Meadow, Mountain, Open and Narrow, never fails to give an unexpected challenge along the way!
Best 3 finishing holes on any course I've ever played.
Tee Boxes in rough shape, several areas of grass damage and for some unknown reason NEVER ENOUGH RAKES for the bunkers!!
Me and my buddy went to go play there for the first time. As soon as we get there the starter immediately asks us how old we are. We are both 18. When I say my age he does not believe us that does not allow us to get a cart (we both have our licenses). After that he asks what tees we are playing from and he says we have to play from one tee up. I am a 8 handicap who drives it about 270. When we get to the first tee box the started drives up to us accusing us of having the wrong time when I had proof on my phone of having the correct time. The course layout was tough to walk with many hills since we were not able to get a cart. But the course was overall in decent condition. The starter making us not feel welcome makes us not want to come back.
I’m coming back
This was my first experience here at this course, and I will say that the greens were absolutely enormous, and there was very rarely a straight pot. The greens have a tremendous amount of slope and break to them, which made it extremely challenging. I personally didn’t think that it was as fast as the horse said they were going to be, but they still rolled pretty good. Pace of play was OK. I think we could’ve done better. We waited for quite a few holes around took us four hours and 35 minutes. Some spots on the horse were burnt out given the extreme heat that we’ve had so I understand that but overall Definitely one of the nicer courses that I’ve ever played in Jersey and for the money it’s really not bad. I think it’ll definitely get my business and I’m gonna bring a few friends next time. The staff was extremely pleasant, very accommodating and informative about details on the course which helped quite a bit
Very good condition. Morris county needs to put money into Berkshire Valley like they did to this place. Sunset Valley worth the trip.
Course layout ok. Greens in great shape. Traps not bad . Pace of play good. Cart girl was around often. Tee boxes good. Place is really shaping up. Way better condition the other Morris County NJ courses.
