Berkshire Valley Golf Course
About
Berkshire Valley has a scenic location in the Highlands region of northern New Jersey. It is known as one of best public golf courses in the area. The course is perched atop the ridge of Green Pond Mountain, providing a dramatic topography for a challenging round of golf. The front of the golf course was carefully carved from a hillside, featuring narrow fairways that place a premium on accuracy. The first five holes are particularly scenic as well as formidable. There are some open holes that play along the cliffs, subjecting them to the prevailing winds, one of these is the intimidating par-5 third. The Berkshire Valley golf course finishes with its signature hole. This hole can be deceiving since it has a generous fairway, but the second shot is uphill to a tough green.

All around good
Greens were rolling extremely nice, downhill putts could make any man cry. Fairways were in very good condition. Only thing that really made me shake my head was most of the bunkers were not raked.. and the amount of ball marks on the greens. That's just public golf I guess?
Good condition quick greens
The course even though it rained the day before was in great shape. The greens were faster than normal which gave us some trouble but and overall good round
Windy day - poor score
Very nice track tucked away in Northern NJ. Scenic views from the opening holes and a fair test of golf. Greens were in great shape for April and the fairways, tee boxes and rough were all on their way to firming up and being in great shape.
The wind on the day I played proved too much of a challenge for me to challenge a good score. However, it was a fun day regardless of my 5 OB penalties.
This course is slightly closer than the crystal Springs courses and offers similar quality at a competitive price.
If you live in Northern NJ and are looking for a new track to play, give it a try, but bring a few extra balls as there is trouble both left and right on many holes.
Great NJ mountain course
One of the best in the metro area. Will play again.
Nice course.
Bad day to book this one...the first 8 holes were closed.
Good course
Due to weather conditions had to play the back 9 twice rather than the regular 18 holes, but still very enjoyable. Seem to always get matched up with some really nice people which makes the round even more enjoyable.
Gorgeous course! If it wasn't for the 5 hr round this would be a 5 star course.
Enjoy this course for the scenery and it's kept pretty nice. Very challenging too!
Interesting variety of holes and challenges.
Great idea to use a shotgun start format in the fall. Allows a single wave a players for a mid-morning start, avoiding frost delays and round completions by mid-afternoon. Only issue was the lead group played slow which extended the round for everyone to 5 hours.
Awesome layout with a rough start but a great view of the finish line
Conditions: Overall - 8.5
Fairways - 8.5 - Lots of divots but still great overall
Greens - 9 - Still rolled pretty fast but kinda beat up by this time of the year.
Bunkers - 7 - A bit muddy and inconsistent.
Rough -8 - Looked a little patchy here and there and gave some tight lies but no bald patches.
This course probably has the toughest first 4 holes in NJ that I've seen. They are up on the mountainside and you're dead left or right off the tee and you have a monster par 3 mixed in there (230+). But the view from up there is amazing. The track kind of reminds of Wild Turkey but a bit more packed together and the views are equally impressive. Overall it's still in great shape for this time of the year and is a fun place to play.
Interesting Challenging Course
This course was actually very enjoyable to play. The front nine is a little tight but tree lined fairways more like the old traditional courses. The back nine is a lynx style wide open, array of verdant fairways, pristine bunkering, and wheat-yellow native rough grasses. The green complexes on all eighteen holes are quite challenging as they are big with lots of anjulation, fast but not rough. I really enjoyed playing this and would strongly recommend it to avid golfers.
Challenging for all levels.
Great course. Course features challenging holes for average and skilled golfers.
Place your tee shots well
With the slopes of some holes and the risk of water on others it's important to place your tee shot to have a chance at par. The course is very challenging on some holes, the par 3's are an example. As this was my first outing here I look forward to returning.
Beautiful landscape surrounds this course and with the leaves turning color in the hills made for a very nice view.
Scenic Course, worth playing
This was the first time I was playing Berkshire Valley and I enjoyed my round at this county owned course.
I had an 8:20 a.m. Tee time on Tuesday, September 24, 2013, and my group actually teed off ahead of time. The staff was extremely friendly and cordial, especially the starter. As a single, I was paired with a three-some who were exceptionally friendly and helpful.
Berkshire Valley is not overly long (5895 yards from the Whites, 6353 from the Blues and 6810 from the Black Tees), but most of the holes, especially on the front, demand accuracy off the tee. The back nine is more open and somewhat more forgiving. Reading some of the online reviews (and the tips given by the staff) stress accuracy for the first four holes, which are narrow with trouble on both sides. I did not find them particularly difficult, however, given the fact that I teed off with a long iron off number 1 (378 yards from the whites) and numbers 4, and 5 (365 and 328 yards respectively). Number 2 is a long par 3 (240 yards), but plays downhill.
Overall the course was in very good condition, especially for a municipal course in late September. The greens are a touch on the quick side, but far from being unmanageable. Sadly, Berkshire Valley, like most public courses, plays host to a particular group of 'golfers' that simply do not care to repair ball marks, replace divots or rake bunkers. This problem was evident on the day I played. But as mentioned before, this is more an issue with thoughtless hacks, rather than would appear to be a management or maintenance issue.
Berkshire Valley is a wonderful layout with beautiful holes. There is a fair amount of water and waste areas that come into play, but with good course management and some local knowledge one should be able to navigate the course and have an enjoyable round. Although there are some easy holes (the par four 11th and 14th, for example), I believe the course design presents some challenge for the advanced player, but the higher handicapper should enjoy it too by simply playing from the proper tees...
The pace of play was excellent - just about 4 hours
Very nice course - extremely slow play...
Course is well kept, staff very friendly, played as a single and even the 3 other people I played with were easy going and mindful of pace of play. However, very little ranger activity and we ended up playing over 5 hours on the course. Played the last hole in the shroud of sundown making the 18 difficult to see. Put a real damper on the entire experience...
This Course is always a challenge to play !
This course is not a hidden gem - too many people know about it now so it's only a "gem" ! You do need to bring your A game to this well maintained cours and be in the right position to score !
Beautiful setting.
Great Course, we will play there again. Very challenging first 5 holes. Something for every player.
Loved the water holes
Great course, great views, great time. Nice and close to my home for easy access. One thing I would change, you need to have the beer girl more available.
Great course with challenging layout and fast greens.
Although this is a county course, the quality of this course is on par with other semi-private courses. Since this course is located in a valley, wind is almost always a factor. If you can survive the first 5 holes, then you can shoot a good score on this course. The greens were fast and in good condition. It is always a pleasure to play this course. Strongly recommended if you love a challenging and good quality golf course.
This course has beautiful views.
Well maintained greens and fairways. Very forgiving fairways make for a more manageable round. Moderately challenging undulated greens. I played my best at this course.
County Course that reminds you of a resort.
Played around noon on a Friday. Course was somewhat crowded (being a perfect sunny day with temps. in the low 70's), so play was slow, more a product of lousy players ahead than lack of supervision by the staff. Course is all up & down, but forgiving, wide fairways, with a handful of water-carry holes. Even though I'm an absolute hack, I managed to get through the round losing only a few balls. Fairways were great, greens in GREAT shape, slick and undulating, bunkers well sanded & pristine. Countryside was gorgeous, with great views. About 20 min drive n/w from Parsippany. When I finished my round, there was even a couple of college kids collecting the carts & wiping down my clubs- at a county course!!! I'll be back for sure. A real gem.
