Terrible Greens
Greens need to be better taken care of. Ball marks and leaves all over
I love this course
This is a great course. Interesting layout. You have to hit the fairways. Tall fescue will eat up your ball. Pretty nice advantage from the forward tees. Fairways in great shape, greens run true. Staff very friendly. Can't beat the price for after 5PM super twilight was only $18 with a cart. Played 18 in 3 hours, plus it has a driving range and real grass putting green for warm ups. Club house is nothing to write home about, and the ladies bathroom needs a good scrubbing.
A Must Play
This is one of my favorite courses to play. A classic Links style course which, without a doubt, lends itself to longer hitters but won't punish shorter shots. The course is fairly wide open and leaves almost every pin accessible with a ball in the fairway, or far enough to get a close shot to the pin across a few fairways, should you find yourself in that situation. However, if the wind picks up when you get there, hold on because that's when this course's claws come out. Overall, a well kept course with interesting hole set up and a classic links style feel.
Great conditions, questionable layout
I've played High Bridge in the past, but it had been a few years. I remembered liking it more than I did this time around. Though the course was in great shape, the layout just didn't do it for me. HBH is billed as a links-style course, and while some of the holes certainly are just that (I'm a big fan of #10, the fescue lined fairway off the tee feels very much like links golf), many don't feel all that linksy. In fact, in my personal opinion, a good handful of the holes just seemed gimmicky.
The par-3 4th is fantastic because of the beautiful view of Spruce Run Reservoir, but the two other par-3s on the front nine are maddening. From the back tees, No. 6 played 81 yards - for me that's about a half lob wedge. No. 8 is incredibly frustrating because it plays well down hill (probably a good 150-200 feet) and it's near impossible to judge the distance without being a course regular.
In addition, there are quite a few blind shots. Adding to the frustration is the fact that the most severe of them comes on No. 5 (making for a stretch of three questionable holes over a four-hole stretch), which plays almost straight uphill off the tee before going back downhill to the green. Blind shots in and of themselves are not necessarily a problem, but some of them are so severe that they really require a forecaddie to help players out.
It's not a bad course by any stretch, just not for me. I will credit the staff for doing a great job maintaining the course and for being friendly throughout. Maybe I'll give it a chance, but I'm not quite sure.
Very Good Layout
Course had an excellent layout for a links-style and it was in great shape. The greens rolled true and the pace of play was spot on.
Nice course, good price
$18 for after 5:30pm is a good deal for this area. The course was very nice, somewhat challenging, but the GPS on the carts helps alot.
So slow!
The course was nice enough, but the pace of play was brutal and completely ridiculous (almost 5.5 hours for the round!) That alone will not make me come back, at least on weekends. Making money is important, but spread the groups out a little bit please!
lack of management
I played the last 2 Sundays, four and a half hours guest time, five the next, with 915 and 1000 tee times. No real ranger working so self managed. Too many par 3 too soon on front demand speed if play management. Will not return.
Short but very solid track
A really nice course for the money. The course is quite short - about 6600 from the tippers - but it's a good layout. There are some good risk-reward shots, especially on the par 5s, all of which are reachable. The par 4s are very short - you really only need driver on #2 and #5 (and on 2 you could even rip a FW since it's quite far down hill). Two of the par 3s are very short (~100) and two are very long (210+). The one-shotters were my favorite holes. On many holes the greens are the best defense - there's a large valley in the middle of the course, and many of the breaks run deceptively towards it.
The course was in good shape - the fairways were pretty firm and the greens were rolling true - not particularly fast, maybe 7 or 8. The rough is light, although if you really spray a shot, there's quite a bit of fescue/native grasses. One thing that is a mild stroke-of-genius is that almost all of the wooded areas are marked as lateral hazards - it definitely sped up play.
The practice areas are also pretty sweet. The have a grass range with targets from 60 to 270 yards (big hitters beware - you can pop range balls onto the 2nd hole with a long drive). There's a nice putting green right by the first tee that's actually joined to the 9th green - old-school links style (although I almost gave someone a heart attack when I dumped my approach deep right and almost into one of the practice holes). The clubhouse/pro-shop is nothing special, but this place is basically all about playing golf.d
good course - moderate difficulty and well kempt
staff was friendly, course was well maintained
course was pretty tough (for a beginner at least)
course was wide open (no trees segmenting off holes) which i usually dont prefer
people were slow ahead of us so it was a little annoying have to adjust our pace
overall, a nice course close to NYC at a fair price
Very nice scenery. nice rolling course
Very nice links style course . Bring some extra balls LOL
Challenging Course
Challenging course. Lots of blind shots, rough is very thick, helps to keep it straight. Beutiful views of the Reservior. Staff was fantastic
Great, fun round
The clubhouse is underwhelming when you arrive, but the course was in excellent shape and pace of play was decent. Lots of very interesting holes with a fair number of blind shots. Not a long course, but fairly narrow fairways and protected greens make it challenging. Lots of fun, would definitely recommend.
A must play
Great links style course. Excellent condition. Greens are in great shape although a bit on the slow side. Fescue is treacherous. Definitely going back.
Great value for the green fees.
Pro shop/club house could use an upgrade but the course was very nice and well worth the green fees. There is a practice range but it is irons only. Played from the middle tees and we still had some challenging par fours (distance wise). Fairways were in great shape and first cut of rough made it the challenge it should be. There are a couple of really nice well protected par threes with changes in elevation making club selection and accuracy a possible game changer. Greens rolled true and were in nice shape. Fall green fees made it a no brainer given other courses in the area are still trying to get summer rates. even summer rates are 20-25% better than courses in the surrounding area.
All around good.
Nothing amazing and nothing to complain about (i.e. better than 75% of courses around).
Nice links course off 78
very nice course..challenging par 3s. fariways well maintained. pretty views
Brutal Rough
I've been a member of High Bridge for three seasons now. A good course, where your tee shots need to be in the fairway. Primary rough is not bad, but secondary rough is foot high fescue. Easy to lose numerous golf balls if you are challenged off the tee. One needs to be straight. A good test of your game when playing from the tips.
Wind can whip up here and change club selection +/- 2 clubs. Course plays cooler due to wind....which is not a bad thing in the dog days of summer.
Greens are in good shape, and are consistent and fair. Iron shots hold. Course plays much longer when wet.
Challenging but fair
I enjoyed playing this course,it is in great shape and the greens rolled true but very fast. Their is lots of fescue grass so if you are not in the fairways it could be a long day and high scores. Their is no Starter at the first tee box which is kind of strange and no ranger that we saw. This course has great views, but it is not meant for beginners.
Fun course and a beautiful day!
This is a fun course to play. Conditions were great and we got our round in a day before they were set to aerate the greens so we got lucky. A lot of blind shots, though, and on some holes you really need to know where to hit your drive or you could really get into trouble.
