Great public course
Well maintained course. Easy layout. Greens are in nice shape.
Good experience at affordable price!
It's first time to play at this course and I really enjoyed the round with beautiful weather. The course were well-maintain and none of mud area to bother my golf even though there were heavy thunder-storm in early morning. This place must go.
Mercer Oaks
The course was in great shape and booking through Golf Now got me an incredible deal.
I would play here again if the opportunity presents itself.
Windy challenge
The course was a windy challenge and a complete enjoyable experience. Lots of sand and variation of hole designs was very good. Number 17 was a little out of character for the rest of the course and a pretty tight fit between a tight tree lined fairway, but it was only 360 yards from the white tee so no need to hit driver.
Very pleased
For a County corse this is one of the best I've played in New Jersey and I played a lot. The only problem that I could think of was the greens were a little slow , maybe because of the rain we've had they couldn't get out there to roll them , but I would recommend this course to anyone in the area to play .
Great track
Not your up and down holes that most dislike. Good mix of looks. Whites play 131 slope - all you want
wet course
was surprised how wet it was, it did rain the day b4. we went out late afternoon, should have been cart path only. Also we caught up to players in front of us and had to constantly wait, very backed up even in front of them. Usually have a better experience here, will be back just have to wait a few days after it rains.
a good track in good shape
The course was wet today as it rained all day yesterday so it was little mushy. However, there was No standing water in bunkers.
The fairways are in great shape. The greens are terrific as they aerated about a month ago and are rolling very true.
If you want to use the GRASS driving range it is NOT open every day.
The course is walkable if you like to walk
Fun Track w/ few surprises
Overall I'd say this course was enjoyable to play. The conditions were great and they kept the greens surprisingly firm based on the amount of rain we've had recently. Pace was solid but the course was not very full when I played. My one complaint is that the course is almost too straight forward. There are very few tee shots where trouble comes into play and overall I'd say the course rewards aggressive behavior because of it. The guys I was paired with played the whites so I joined to make things easier, but I wouldn't recommend that set of tees to anyone with average distance. I am by no means a bomber and often had a wedge in my hand to many greens, which is great for the scorecard but can get boring after a while. Other than that I'd say go enjoy this course and bomb away1
First time playing - will go back
Course was in good shape, fairways could have been a little better given the rain and sun we have had this spring. Greens were excellent and pace of play was great (we almost never waited). Friends ate in the bar, said it was good. Lots of room on the driving range with both grass and mat options. Would definitely play there again.
Hard to believe this is a County course!!
I learned to play golf on this course when it opened in the 90's back when they had a portable trailer for a clubhouse. I'm not a County resident so "get" to pay double, thus I don't play it as often as I'd like. But when I do I feel like I'm on a high-falootin' private country club. GREAT JOB by everyone involved....
home course
this is my home course but being objective.
Today the greens actually rolled like putting greens. 3 weeks ago after aeration they rolled like sandpaper.
Course played in 4 1/4 hours on a Friday could have played faster but the people in my group...
If you have never played here, it is a good track for a municipal course.
Hole #3 is sneaky long unless you can draw the ball.
Hole #4 is a short par 5 if you can fade it.
Hole #9 is the hole most golfers will tell you they hate.
Hole #17 is a great hole-choose club off the tee wisely or your first shot will be wet.
The fairways have tight lights. They should let the grass grow a little longer. Bunkers are good for a muni course as well.
No blind shots pretty straight forward with only tee shot on #9 and #17 you need to choose wisely based upon what tee boxes you are hitting from and your length
Disappointing Overall Conditions
As a bachelor for a weekend, I was looking to find courses a little further away than my usual radius. I came across Mercer Oaks (about 45 Miles away from my house) and read very positive reviews. I decided to make the trip and go out and play.
Staff friendliness from Pro Shop to the Starter was excellent! Pace of Play was very good and we moved quickly at our own pace throughout the round.
However, the overall course conditions were very disappointing. The Tee Boxes were in bad shape and the Grass was longer then some rough areas on other courses. The fairway and rough on the course was in ok shape although there were quite a few bare spots.
The greens were extremely slow which I didn't expect from such a well rated and reviewed course. Many downhill puts would stop above the hole. In addition the greens were pretty bumpy although aeration had been done a while ago.
I understand that this time a year course maintenance can be a challenge. However, I plaid Neshanic Valley the day before and the course there was in much better shape. I paid the same amount on both courses but the difference was quite significant in course condition.
Mercer Oaks (West) Course
Great course and layout. Well maintained, with excellent off-course amenities
Nice Links Course
Played on a rainy windy day so the course was fairly empty and we played at our own pace.
Course was in very good conditions with two exceptions: 1 the greens had recently been aerated so they were bumpy and 2 the sand was like concrete due to the rain. But both will be much better within 2 weeks for the greens.
I played the white tees which was a little long for me being in my mid 60's but I played with three young guys. So there were some long par 4's.
Nice combination of par 3's and par 5's.
Liked the 17th and 18th closing holes as 17th can be a game changer as it was narrow and tree lined, the only one on the course and the 18th was a long par 5 easily making score of anywhere from a 4 to 8or9 possible.
Nice club house and snack bar area, with a covered patio. Employees all seemed very friendly.
What a rip off!
No water in the ball washers. Hitting off matts. Matts without tees. One cart girl for 2 courses. And none of that is as important as course conditions. I don't mind paying a top rate if the course delivers top conditions. None of those other issues would've mattered had the course been in great shape. But it sucked. It's a disgrace to the game of golf that courses like this one get away with charging $80 to play 3 days after aerating the course. What miserable conditions. I don't care that it's a "muni" course. NJ county courses in general are not very good. They are geared towards residents who get great rates to play. As a result, courses are over played with little concern for guests without county cards. Avoid this course. It's an absolute dog track.
Solid Muni Course!
I have moved to the central NJ/Mercer County area last year and have played this course a few times already in 2017. I play often in Atlanta when visiting the in-laws and wherever I can play.
First, the course is fun to play. The holes are all different from the White tees (71/131) around 6100 yards. Most tee shots are straight with several dog legs and blind landing areas. The only thing I wish the course had were more hills. Mercer Oaks East has a bit more undulations on the fairways. For reference, I shot high-80s the first couple times, then shot 76 the last time around.
The wind was rough the last few times I played this course and each time it was blowing from different directions. For example, Hole 6 is a straight par 4. First time I played it, I hit a solid drive down the middle to the 150 yard marker. Second time into the wind, 170 yards away. Third time, 125 left.
The back 9 looks and feels different from the front 9 so it's appealing from a variety standpoint. Given it's been the winter and now early April, there were no ball washers or trash cans anywhere by the tee boxes. No marshals to be found.
Two complaints - My first complaint is the pace of play. There are a lot of hackers out there. Personally, I think they should play more of Princeton Country Club to get better but these hackers are teeing off from the Blues on West. Slows the round down. But who am I to complain? Everyone's gotta start somewhere.
Second complaint - a lot of goose dung. Like everywhere. They've done a better job of cleaning it up but it's a bit distracting if you're walking. See photos for examples of it.
Oh and the sand is not in good shape yet. I hope they improve this with the winter weather loosening up. Overall, I give the rating 3.75 stars, not full 4 stars yet. I hope the quality improves with the weather.
Early Spring Round
Course was in good shape for the time of year. Had some slow 2-some's in front of us that we're playing at leisure but let us play through. 3.5 hour round!
