Interesting course
Didn't realize the course was built on an old landfill. Didn't take long for the smell to make me nauseous. With the slow pace, had to choke on it extra long. It has a fun layout, but don't think I could handle another 5 hours in the heat with that smell.
Nice course. Beautiful layout. Amenities lacking - golf range balls should included.
Very average expect for the price
Course has better than average greens but other than that.. the course is pretty boring.
Inclement weather, still open
Although it was raining and cart path only, the course was in great shape.
A Shadow of It’s Former Self
Good value for my time selected. Course continues it’s decline - no upkeep, grassless areas abound. Food was better than in past years. However, it amazes me that two municipal courses, close to each other, managed by same management company, same price, etc can be so different in maintenance, upkeep and level of play. Sylvan Glenn is first rate, well-maintained, excellent shape , great beauty and it’s sister, Sanctuary Lake is the opposite. However, I am still very happy to have two friendly, affordable municipal courses in our community. No other community has suc an amenity.
Its all in the hills
Excellent layout, difficult greens to read lead to a fun round. Couple of places where the condition was beat up by ruts and tire tracks.
Will play again!
Great course and great price. The absolute only thing that I desired was taller vent poles to let the stink out of the landfill. Having one on the #10 tee box punching me in the face while trying to hit a decent ball was beyond difficult. Missed fairway but had a nice 8 into the green.
Nice Course
Nothing Bad to say here. A bit stacked up to start but a slower group let us play through and moved well after that. Greens and fairways were in great shape. Some hole felt a little Close together but It didn't affect my round. With the hot deal it was definitely worth the price.
Thank you for reaching out with us and reviewing our property, however I could not disagree more with your opinion that the course is declining, myself and our maintenance team here at Sanctuary Lake work extremely hard each and every year to improve course conditions. If you did not know, Sanctuary Lake is one of the most unique properties in all of southeast Detroit. It was built on an old landfill back in 2002 and was contracted out to be built by Treadwell Real Estate. Upon receiving the bid Treadwell and his team used 1,000,000 cubic yards of free material from an adjacent road project, I-696 to back fill the course. Using this material to build the golf course helped Treadwell and his team complete the project far below budget, however this material is anaerobic which repels water from moving through the soil and honestly most of the material is just concrete and rocks, which is the reason why we have so many bare spots on the course. We are working hard to fix every area on the golf course and I regularly post it on my Facebook page if you’re ever interested in checking out what we’re up to. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me for any further questions or concerns, sincerely Nic Thommes.
