West/North at Tanglewood - The Lion
About
Tanglewood, also known as "The Lion," boasts 27 holes of championship golf, divided into the North, South, and West nines. The holes are played in three different 18-hole combinations. The North/West Course starts with the gentlest nine before moving on to the newest and arguably the most challenging nine. The undulating landscape provides a soft bowl-shape to many of the holes that help to keep errant shots in play by corralling them away from the bordering backyards. Water hazards come into play on seven holes on the West nine and the greens are also guarded heavily by pins. The West's third hole is one of the most memorable holes on the golf course. This tricky par 4 gets progressively more challenging as you move from the wide fairways to the steep and intrusive bunkers that lead to the green.

Very well maintained.
Mark and his staff have the course in great shape.
Nice
It was a nice place and staff were very welcoming. The course was good condition even after a weekend. Would play again.
Tanglewood
Some greens were still partially damaged but no tentative green. Totally, course condition was good.
The course difficulty is approporiate for intermediate golfers like me.
Worst Greens I've Played This Season
I played Tanglewood South/West nines as a practice round for an upcoming tournament today and was very disappointed with the condition of the course.
First of all I arrive early to warm up at there driving range which is a little piece of land wedged between the 9th hole and houses and doesn't allow for a club longer then a 3 iron to be hit off of shaggy unkept grass. From there I walk over to a practice putting green which was the worse condition practice green I've seen in at least 2 years. 75% of the green was lacking grass and roped off and the remaining areas were in such terrible shape I didn't even bother using it.
I started on the South Nine, the 1st green was the worst on the course with 4 and 6 also in very bad shape. Most the greens on the South had some damage that caused putts to bounce off line. There is also an ongoing construction project on Hole #3 a Par 5 in which there's random piles of dirt 5-6 feet tall in the middle of the fairway. The West nine was in much better shape with minimal damage to the greens but still some areas that altered play. I would like to note that the course condition besides the greens was pretty good and the fairways were well kept.
I've played this course for the same tournament 3 years in a row and this is by far the worst I've seen it and I will not be playing it again this year afterward. I know it was a bad winter in Michigan but it's July and the Summer has been great, there's no excuse for how bad some of these looked.
I would recommend playing another course for the price they charge.
This course has excellent fairways
Played here several times, but pace was very slow for a Tuesday afternoon. Greens also were not perfect on each due to bad seeding on some. Had I payed full price I would be more annoyed. I will continue to play as it is one of the better courses in Novi and Oakland County.
Putting greens were terrible
Putting greens need work. Lot of heavy construction around the course. Very distracting.
Tanglewood South/West
Enjoyed my round at Tangelwood as it moved very fast - very few golfers on the course. Overall I would rate it as a fair course from a chanllenge perspective. Several greens were in rough shape from the difficult winter, but did not affect the putting as much as I thought it would.
Course is in great shape
For the money this course is a must, most greens are in great shape and pace of play is amazing
changes
Preface all of this by saying this is one of my favorite courses in the area and I'll be back many times this and every year. But, on this particular occasion:
The winter caused problems with a lot of course's greens, so we expected the issues in April. We didn't think they'd still be there in June. They were.
They have a rating for staff friendliness and everyone was very friendly. But they were slow. From the cashier ringing us up to the starter to the folks at the bar, everyone was slow.
I rarely comment on the food and beverage quality but they renovated the clubhouse in the spring. First time I've been there since. Replaced the cooler with bottles of whatever drink you were looking for with self-serve fountain drinks and self-serve hot dogs. Bad idea. Takes forever, the bar staff doesn't pay attention to the self-serve customers so it takes a long time to pay, and the idea that the guy who self served his hot dog before me may or may not have washed up before handling the bag of buns or the tongs ... eww. Won't be stopping in for a dog at the turn anymore with current system.
Good Course
Round was overall good. Few of the greens got beat up from harsh winter as most courses have. Only gripe was there was fivesome in front of us which made it for long day.
Better than expected.
Enjoyed playing the West course and in good shape. The South course greens are not in the best shape.
Nice layout
Course was a little wet , but overall a lot of nice features. Great pace of play. Course will be great once it dries up!!
Tanglewood GC
Course needs a great deal of maintenance from tee to green. Grass cut for USOpen height and rairways and greens too high for ball spinning. Greens not ready for play. Lots of win tree er kill and v err ry slowan dc bumpy not rolled properly. This course plays mre like a$20 muni.than a $50 semi private. Owner needs to focus mor err on course upkeep for players.
The courses have been repairing.
The greens are not perfect yet . The north course is still working or remodeling. I'm look forward to being set up completely . I liked these courses so far .
Tanglwood
Quite a few of their greens had a lot of dead spots. They are renovating the club house so it is completely closed.
Sunday Lone Ranger
Scheduled a later tee time on a Sunday thinking the pace would be alright for a single. Not even close. Took at least 5 hrs even though they had 27 holes. However it was my first time here and I really liked the course. So I would go back.
Great course for the price.
Tanglewood is a 3 9 - hole course set up. Usually the theme with a lot of newer courses is an open, wooded, and marsh type course for each 9. The two 9's I had the opportunity to play were both open with moderate challenges. Very well maintained course. However if I were looking for a challenge there is a course just down the road that offers 3 9's with 3 distinct challenges. So would I play it again yes if the price were right. But for a challenge I would probably go somewhere else.
Beautiful course for the money, it's a great deal
Well maintained, most holes in great sharp, tee box, fairway, and green. each green fast and persist speed. South course longer and more difficulty, little disapoint
Excellent conditions. Great greens.
Highly recommend this course (South/West). Besides the wet sand traps, the course was in great condition. Greens were amazing and in awesome condition.
