Better as a quarry
Wow. What a journey. Long story short, this course would be best off being sold to the quarry across the street. I have been golfing at this course for quite some time, before it was an 18 hole course even, and it is STILL not in any great condition. If anything it’s starting to get worse from some improvements they’ve made over the years. First of all, the pricing is way too high for what the course is. Prices are raised when you have a better product to offer, so why should people be paying more for a product that hasn’t changed in the past 15 years? (Not to mention their seasonal pass holder “membership” offer that literally only includes green fees. No range, no carts that are still $15+ to rent, and no other typical benefits you would get at any other course. What a deal!) The new interior of the clubhouse looks great… for the 5 minutes I spend in there… and all the drink prices, alcoholic and not, were way too high to have any of my interest. Even hitting range balls is too much. Just one size for that much? If I’m playing golf I just want a little warm-up, not an entire bucket to tire myself out. Just does not make any sense. And then we get to the course. Right off the bat, I see the wide patches of clover that is consistently seen all over the course. Very nice. They put in new yardage signs, in different places of the old ones, so all the landscaping from the old ones looks so awkward and out of place. Even nicer. The tee boxes are decent, depending on what hole we are discussing. There’s times where tee markers are aimed so far off the fairway, or par 3s that are just all torn up from divots. The fairways are also decent, except for your occasional burn out patch (pictured), clover patch, or random tall pieces of grass that they can’t bother to get rid of. And that’s just on the front. The back is just patches of dirt for most of the fairways. I understand it used to be a farm field… 15 years ago? It was extremely exciting to see them drive a truckload of sand to spread across 12s fairway, in the middle of July, in peak golf season, basically making it a penalty to hit the center of the fairway. What benefit came from this? Not to mention, it’s sand. The wind and rain over the next couple weeks that followed literally washed it all away. What an excellent use of money! I will say it was a nice change of pace to finally play out of sand, but I didn’t expect the sand to be in the middle of the fairway where you’re supposed to hit it. On the topic of fairways, they are gradually cutting them smaller. Whether it’s shorter to where some people can’t even reach it, or skinnier to where good drives still get penalized. This includes the nice aprons they use to cut in front of the greens on the par 3s they have just now completely neglected (pictured). Looks absolutely stunning. Thank god we got those new yardage signs. Onto the next topic is the greens. This is my favorite part. First off, they are impossible to hit approach shots to. You either hit into the fridge that is long and spongy to where the ball doesn’t go anywhere, or you hit the green and it bounds the length of the green way past where you wanted it to go. Very fun. It would also help if the greens were a little larger, which very similar to the fairways, they are getting smaller as well. You go to most courses and they have their green sprinklers in the fringe just off the green. Their green sprinklers are 5 to 10 feet in the rough. Which doesn’t help because the rough gets just as much water as the green making it U.S. open thick and long, which is completely inconsistent with the dead rough on the rest of the course. However, I am not sure I would trust them to make that adjustment. The way they cut greens now looks like a blind person does it. The edges where it meets the fringe is ungodly inconsistent (pictured). Almost every green you can see it accidentally cut too far into the fringe where it is now starting to die, or cut too far into the green where they, imagine that, are making the green smaller. It’s just so unprofessional. However, my most favorite thing about the green is the pin placements. They change it maybe once a month if we are lucky, and by about the second week of it being there, the lip of the cup is all torn up, the hole is starting to volcano and making a large, dead circle around the hole from all the foot traffic. It makes it almost impossible to putt, really adding to the challenge. Especially on the par 3s where the green is littered with ball marks that people refuse to fix. Very unique design. This course is simply just a park that people can get drunk at and fool around. I frequently find there to be 5 or 6 somes out there having a grand ole time slowing up the entire course. You can also find a lot of different types of alcohol in their trash cans that they don’t even sell in the clubhouse. Seems like they have things under control. They really lucked out with all the fools who don’t know how to golf and are just looking to drink and waste the day away. They’re really making bank off those imbeciles.
In conclusion, they need to make improvements, or they are going to continue to go downhill. Which is a shame because the track is actually pretty decent. Also, a great course for those just starting out. Things were much better when Dave was running the show (for those that know who Dave is, I’m sure you agree). No one who owns or manages this course knows the basic things about golf or simple business. Hire another person or two on grounds crew, maybe one that can see where they’re driving the mower. Move the pins AT LEAST once a week. Please. Lay some grass seed so I don’t have to hit out of the dirt or the random sand you decide to put down. Even in the spring time, when grass should be growing the best, those spots continue to remain bare, or flooded because they can’t fix their drainage. Because that helps a lot. So again, I’m soooo thankful for the money they spent on remodeling the clubhouse, getting new yardage signs, and other miscellaneous things that I don’t care about because it’s not improving the course. I would be much happier with spending more money there if they did put their money into making the course better, and not a field yearning to be a quarry. Again, more money, for a better product. Where is my better product? Maybe at another course.
Solid Public Course
One of the better public courses in the area and very reasonably priced. Course has an extra par three that is a nice addition.
Layout is over flat terrain, ut greens are built up with plenty of undulation.
Still in great shape,
I play this course at least once a week because it is in really good shape and green fees are reasonable. Played yesterday and with all the rain we’ve had it was a muddy mess but playable. Greens were in excellent shape and not soggy at all. Still my course of choice. Playing again Friday.
Great place
Staff was awesome as usual. I bring my friends from out of town all the time to play here. My buddy came down from Charleston Came this weekend and even though it was raining the staff gave us great advice as to when it was moving out and when to get home. Just when we thought the day was gone, they were spot on with weather. I have played the Westin course maybe 10 times and this is a better deal and even better course. Will continue to come back.
Great Course and Rate
Discovered Crosswinds during a warm-weather escape, and it was everything a frequent golfer could want. Enjoyed it so much, we played it again the next day. High marks from my way.
Twilight golfing
Great course but the only thing I don’t like. You have to book this golfnow you pay the 5 dollars for nothing and then when you arrive you pay your greens fee, so why? The next rime I wanted to play I called the course directly and the person tried to put me thru Golf Now and I explain this to him and he said he doesn’t know? Why it like that
Great Reprieve!
Crosswinds is a course I love to play as a Senior golfer. The Senior tees are fair, and. still provide a challenge. The challenge is sufficient enough to cause my son, who hits the ball much further than I, to still be willing to play alongside me so we can enjoy the course together.
We also even enjoy the frequent air maneuvers of several jets from the nearby airbase! They provide intermittent distraction from any missed shots, and help us enjoy the great outdoors!
