Conditions Improving
I played a few rounds last year at HDCC and the conditions were poor. Hot dry summer plus neglect by previous owners had taken its toll. I played there yesterday for the first time this year and was pleasantly surprised by the conditions. Fairways are much better. Tees and greens have improved. The new ownership has put an effort into bringing this course back and it's beginning to show. There is still work to be done. Tees and greens are not great but improved from where they were. Give the course another year, with some favorable weather, and I believe it will be a very nice course. I hope the new owners stick with it. HDCC is a important part of Toledo's golf history and it's nice to see it making a comeback.
Good layout - conditions just OK
3.5 stars. Played in late June 2025. First time playing. Very friendly staff, and pace of play was GREAT!
I don’t know what the reputation of this course, and the one across the street (South Toledo) are. I believe the two were connected at one point - this was the North course. But now, they are separate. I played South Toledo last year, and was impressed with the fast and well kept greens.
In terms of conditions, it was a bit of a mixed bag. First the good. The bunkers!!! They are pristine - best I’ve played out of in the Toledo area. I was in both a fairway and greenside bunker, and they were true, with soft sand - not the hard pan clay bunkers most places turn into. Also, the rough was thick and lush for the most part - which I think is a positive. I played in the morning and the cups were cut fresh as well, which I appreciated.
However, I was a bit disappointed in the greens and fairways. It was surprisingly wet there. I would say it was from rain, but the sprinklers were on when I arrived. Maybe they keep it that way on purpose, or were doing it to prepare for the hot, sunny day. I’m not accusing them of not mowing them, as there were a lot of maintenance guys out doing work in the course, but the fairways were legitimately long, and the greens were a little shaggy, and thus VERY slow. It felt like a course that should have fast greens, and just didn’t.
A handful of the greens have disease, with unfortunately 16 being the worst (I think that’s the signature hole)? A few of the tee boxes were in rough shape, particularly 9 where half the tee box was unplayable.
There are some really good holes, and I enjoyed this layout more than South Toledo. 4-6 is a great stretch thru the hills. 4 requires about a 220 tee shot to avoid going into the downhill mounds. The 2nd shot on 4 is simply awesome. 5 is a cool par 3 down the hill, and 6 has a fun tee shot thru the chute. On the back 9, both the par 3’s are pretty holes, with 16 being the peninsula green par 3.
While their price point is competitive in the Toledo market ($47 for 18 in a cart), I feel it’s overpriced. I played with the discount book, so it was worth it for that price, but at full price, there are better courses in the Toledo area for the same or cheaper. I think they should be about $10 cheaper than they currently are given the current conditions.
I did enjoy the day. Fast play as a single is hard sometimes, but it wasn’t here!
Fun course but not worth full price.
A friend and I decided to go here for a round of golf for his birthday. We chose here because we had a coupon from a book and we thought it would be the best maintained course of the 3 we had looked at. The staff are great, the Marshall and starter were very helpful on giving pointer for the course to us who have never played here before. The design is fun and challenging with 4,5,6, and 16 being some of my favorite holes I have played this year. However the course is not in the condition I would think a semi private course should be. I have seen cheap 9 hole courses with better greens, fairways, and tee boxes than this place. I would not go here for full price, which is almost 60 on the weekends and over 40 on the weekdays.
Disappointing
Course layout was cool and staff was nice, but right away from hole 2 on there was a long wait to tee off. Tee boxes and fairways had long grass, overall course condition was poor.
The club lacks from top to bottom
I will start off by saying that I scheduled my round for the wrong day, which is on me. The guy behind the desk was a jerk about it, but his boss made it right and let me play. Very slow play, took 2 hours longer than a normal 18. Tee boxes, and greens Need a lot of work. If I didn’t get the deal on golf now I would say it’s definitely not worth the price.
Absolute goat ranch
Pro shop attendant charged us (buddy and I) $8 each extra to ride in a cart despite the deal on golf now including one. Guys in front of us were going off the first tee barefoot with one guy walking and three riding. They took 15+ minutes to play the first hole even though it’s a straight away <400 yard par 4 and no one working said a word. Course was in awful condition, tee boxes missing grass, fairways with patches of weeds/mud, and the greens were closer to a nicer course’s fringe. As someone who used to enjoy coming here years ago it’s a shame what they’ve allowed to happen to the course and will not be going back.
Pour Course Management
I grew up working and playing here. The starter was grumpy and not aware of where players were at on the course. The 9-holes took 3 hours to play. The foursome ahead of us were extremely slow and had 3 or 4 holes open ahead of them. No ranger to check on the pace of play. Offered to go off the back nine where no one was teeing off and no one on 8 or 9. Very unfortunate day. Makes me not want to come back and play again.
Terry Bradfield
Going downhill fast
No starter in sight so guys are on the first tee box barefoot thinking they’re John Daly and instead are hitting three drives in a row onto the driving range after going to their cart to retrieve a new one every time. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens with large patches of dirt/mud where good shots would land. Greens were like a good course’s fringe or the top tier courses in the area’s fairways. Not worth the money when there are so many better options in the area.
Took forever
Overall the course is fun to play and challenging but they need to spread out tee times or something. Constantly in a line behind 2+ groups
Home town gem
Great staff. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting and playing with the group of people I met course was in great condition and a real challenge
Horrible play experience
Staff was rude and approached our group almost every hole, telling us to pick up the pace. We played 9 in under 2 hours. Seems like they frown on the public playing there. Course was not in the condition you’d think the price and dress code would reflect. Will not play here again, take your money across the street to South Toledo Golf Club. Friendly Staff and same play conditions imo.
Good timing
I happen to get there at the right time. Started at 12:30 and finished at 3 for 18 holes. Course is in good shape just bring something to drink, nothing on the course
Slowest round of my life.
Way overbooked! It took 3 hours to get through 9 holes and not a single ranger in sight. Poorly managed and they completely took advantage of their patrons. Had a 12:40 tee time, was delayed until 1:00pm and then never had time or the patience to finish 18 holes. We were waiting 15 min. at every tee box with up to 3 groups backed up waiting to tee off on most holes. No apologies from the course management.
Course is in horrible shape
The greens were in terrible shape along with the tee boxes . This used to be one of the best courses in the area, I will never play another round at Heatherdowns CC. No
Nice course great value
Roughs could use some attention. Grass was very long hard to find ball when not in fairway, caused play to be slowed. Otherwise things were very enjoyable.
Early in the season
It’s a decent course. Fairways could use some attention. There were a good amount of dandelions in certain spots. It’s still early in the season though so conditions were as expected. Greens were in good shape.
