Expensive but nice
Good layout. Wish it was a par 72 instead of 70. Too expensive jt they realize they’re the only course on key west so they have the monopoly to charge whatever they want and do. If you want/need to play, it’s good. Just should be a $40 track, not $100
Keys to staying out of trouble
We played with Mike a local, who directed us where to hit most drives and it helped a lot and the course was in great shape, especially the fairways. Didn’t use the restaurant and I think it was closed due to Covid but the staff was great. The range was just a large net but due to the lack of space in the Keys, it served well to warm you up. Some greens were sanded but didn’t impact overall play much.
Bucket List
Fun course with some tricky holes including a par 3 over a mangrove marsh. With no view of the green from the tee box you are hitting blind towards the flag. I would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to check off playing the southern most golf course. Course conditions are average at best so the price reflects the location. Bunkers are more dirt and stones then sand and fairways puddle in rain. This is not a knock on the maintenance of the course. I believe this is do to the soil of the islands.
Great course
The course is beautiful and has a great lay out. The day we played it was a little wet and we had cart oath only which is never fun.
Poor Course Management + Conditions
Welcome to Key West’s only golf course and the inside information that only frequent visitors discover after a few seasons of playing in KW. The price is well above the market for similar golf courses in south Florida. The course is in desperate need of friendly, good customer service practises, professional management and leadership with the knowhow and experience to resolve current inferior practises such as: paring with similar handicaps, otherwise you will be paired willy-nilly without any forethought and end up with golfers that are new to the game or play once a year (which is fine if you have time). Moreover, the course is in desperate need of a marshal to regulate the pace of play; the bunkers are filled with rock and little sand, which makes play out of bunkers inconsistent and frustrating - all of these current practises reduce the enjoyment of playing golf and are extremely dire! The KW Golf Course continues to have ongoing drama with its staff, management, and ownership which greatly impact the enjoyment of playing the game of golf on this course. Case in point, if you play frequently and know the staff and owner personally you will be treated preferentially; e.g., you get to skip around slow golfers ad hoc, but if you are someone that is not in cahoots with the staff, you may be penalized by the owner and new course manager who is a joy to collaborate with, and probably due to he being known as a ‘druggy’. For all that live in KW fulltime and do not want to drive to Marathon to play golf, you have great tolerance in dealing with the incompetent management, lack of customer service and deficient course management, I feel for you. We will certainly not be returning to play until they make price adjustments, management changes and improvements to course.
SLOW PLAY EXPECT a 5 hr. PLUS
paid over $100 dollars each for myself and wife.
Brad had a bad day behind the counter. Pace was slow and needed to be in Miami for a dinner meeting. When I can in for the turn, I asked Brad We just played 9 holes for almost a 3 hrs. playb and is it open on the back 9 and I need to get play done in less than 2 hrs. response this is a public course and can not happen. I did not ask for my money back for the back 9, nor did I need to thank him for his great service and response. If you play here expect a 5 hr. round.
Iguana Country
This course is half golf course and half zoo with birds and iguanas running around everywhere. Had to slam the brakes on the golf cart a few times to avoid hitting the lizards, and wait for them to move away from balls in the fairway, rough (see photo), and to clear tee boxes. Some were small, others are huge.
As for the course itself, it's here or nothing in Key West, and they know it. That said, it's top dollar for very subpar conditions tee to green. I know they've had a lot of rain recently, and the course obviously does not drain well. But it's pure supply and demand to pay $100 for these conditions - lots of dead spots even on greens, sand traps full of water or mud, and it's just ugly to look at. Staff was ok, nothing special. Was a bit of a pain to get in through security in an Uber.
The layout itself has potential, with some tight driving holes. Greens are tricky, especially if you're on the wrong side of the hole.
If there was somewhere else to play I would say go elsewhere. But there's not. So if you want to golf while in Key West you're stuck here. Just don't expect too much, except for the high price tag and animal kingdom.
interesting and challenging
I've been to Key West many times but never played the golf course. From the highway it looks like any short uninteresting flat muni.I was pleasantly surprised to find many holes with water, mangroves, doglegs and challenging shots. The greens were also in good shape .Maybe my experience was tainted by the fact that I shot my handicap (12) and did not lose a ball. I will be back again.
Be Conservative
The listed difference between back tees (blue ~6500) and middle tees (white ~6000) is only 500, but difficulty level is disproportionately more.
There is very little room for inaccurate shots (essentially target golf). Fairways are very tight and trouble(mangroves, homes, streets...) lurking everywhere (particularly on front-9). Errant drives will almost always lead to penalties. Ball will either be gone or found, but nestled within large exposed tree roots or rocks (not playable).
Many large bunkers on every hole. Expect multiple sand shots over the course of the round. The sand is actually a cement/rock/mud like mixture. Even if you hit the green, the ball often rolls into the traps.
In Summary:
Only course around so it's here or no golf. My advice would be to play the whites and leave driver in bag (unless you are low single digits). If you want a lower score, play conservatively.
Golfing in the Keys
I golf Key West every time I visit, about 5 to 6 times a year,it seems every time the course is in better shape. The course is a little on the tough side for me .the seanery is great and the wild life in something to be seen, the cart girl is there pretty often,I,ve had a few lessens from the pro and he seems to be very good and working with people an there weekness, staf is very friendly, love playing there
Good holiday course
I played Key West in the company of a gentleman from Maryland. We both enjoyed playing the course and agreed that it was a good vacation course. Sufficiently challenging but nothing too hard. The infamous 8th hole is a straight forward par 3. Just hit your shot and remember it is a par 3 so you need to hit the green ! Do that and two putts later you have your par !!
The course could do with a bit more maintenance but generally it was in reasonable condition.
If you are that far down in the Keys then why not play the course and see for yourself.
Reasonable course, pricey for what it was.
We were delayed for 30 minutes beyond our booked tee time (even though it was 1020). Staff obviously tried hard to get us on.
Layout and conditions OK, but the 8th (par 3, 150 yards) is silly - no bail out for short hitters e.g. ladies, and really scary for anyone, especially into the prevailing breeze.
We saw the drinks cart only once
Not really best value for money, but I suppose that it's a looooong way from the next course, so it's a bit of a captive market. Nice to say we played there, and for once, I bought a logo golf shirt!
