BlackHorse Golf Club - South Course
About
The South Course at BlackHorse is known for the sand quarry that was ingeniously worked into the layout by the design team. Particularly on the back side, the wetlands and sand features come into play prominently and create a totally unique setting for golf.
Getting there : Take Hwy. 290 west to the Spring Cypress exit. Go south (left) under Hwy. 290 to Old Hempstead Hwy. Turn right and drive .5 mile. Turn left on House & Hahl Rd. Then left on Mound Rd. and right on Fry Rd. The entrance is on the right.

Last daylight savings round
Haven’t played this course in eight months but what doesn’t change is the cumulative difficulty this Blackhorse South course puts on a senior golfer like me. I start out playing the whites and by the time I’m finished it’s the greens. Played with two fellow retirees Bill and Mike and we had a blast. Greens were lightning fast. I really like the two par threes on the back nine. They’re elevated with a picturesque carry over water associated with Cypress Creek. White knuckles.
Can anyone at Blackhorse rake a trap?
Quick review that boils down to one thing. Course & conditions were good with one glaring error, ALL of the traps looked like the surface of the moon! It was so bad we decided to allow a "rake & drop" after ending up in innumerable footprints. To be fair, I assume the traps were raked at the beginning of the day, but by the time we played mid-day they were unplayable, so it has to be a player problem. Blackhorse, pls address this, your facility is too good for this.
Frankly for the 1 hr. drive & the $ I probably wouldn't go back.
Black Horse South
Great course, but we were a twosome stuck behind a fivesome.
Was told "members" are allowed a fivesome, but these guys were in the woods all day.
Worse, we were told as we checked in that they played "fast".
C'mon, man...5 at 4 o'clock is ok. NOT at 12 o'clock
Needs water
Nice greens and tee boxes. Fairways are rock hard and patchy in spots. Bunkers need work. Too deep at the bottom, and thin enough on the sides to expose plywood.
Very good condition
Very good fairway condition.
Layout 4and 1/2 out of 5. Still good.
Greens are fast, I like it.
Challenge me some holes.
Slow slow slow
Greens were slow compared to wait they normally are. Got thru the first seven holes fairly quickly as a 3some let me thru although I was supposed to be paired with them. Then I ran into a 2some that wouldn't let me thru. Got to ten they you can play behind us or go ahead . Should have waved thru at least 2 holes prior . Then stuck behind another time who also had nowhere to go because of bigger groups ahead of them . They also made me okay behind them . Whatever ,. I shot 78. Starter/marshal not doing squat.
Hello. Thank you for reviewing the course. We apologize for the delay of play during your round. This is by no means the standard we strive to achieve. We work hard to accommodate everyone who visits our course and to best control pace allowing everyone to finish in a reasonable amount of time. We will continue to look for ways to improve. Thank you for playing BlackHorse Golf Club - South Course. We hope to see you again soon.
Just not worth the money
In my opinion it's overrated. The course is decent at best. I've played amazing courses that were in great shape, catered to customer service, and had technology improvements like GPS on the carts, text to order food and drinks to be ready at turn, free range, etc, for half the cost, and on weekend as well. Elevated green fees, sub par customer service, pace of play, and nothing really outstanding, makes this course overrated overall.
Great Day
The course was as I expected it to be..in tip top shape. Aeration had been done recently but had no effect on playability.
Hello. Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. We see you rated the course 2-stars and are interested in learning what we can do to improve for your next visit.

The South course is in terrible shape and not worth the $120 I had to pay to play it.
This is the second time I’ve had a bad experience with some of the pro shop guys. I asked a question about the greens being punched on the South course and the old man responded with a belittling “do you think you’d get to play the course for $70 if they weren’t punched?!” I had to remind him that i paid $120 to play the south course. That ended up being a complete ripoff also. The course was completely soaked, there multiple areas all over the fairways that turned completely to mud, multiple areas where grass wouldn’t grow and none of the tee boxes were cut. The course definitely was not worth $120 and i certainly will not be returning again to deal with the old man with a horrible attitude. Good riddance.
Hello, Thank you for leaving us a review. We are sorry to hear your experience was anything short of 5 stars, but we hope you will give us another try in the future. Thank you for choosing BlackHorse Golf Club - South Course.
You'll enjoy the round
Played in the afternoon and it was hot. Staff were very friendly and wanted to help in any way. I was a single and took my chances to hook up with someone. When I arrived there was no one there to join. The starter indicated the front nine was crowded and suggested going off the back nine since it was open. These are the little things that make a difference.
The layout is fun. Some holes are straight away but many are dog legs and have either sand or water to contend with. Ya kind of welcome the straight par 4s at that point lol. Varied tee lengths so you can make the course as long as you want.
Conditions were ok. But keep in mind it's June. Greens held to an extent. Putting was true (not bumpy), and were a little slow, which was not too bad.
All in all, it's worth the time and money.
Top public course in Houston
I have been playing across the Houston Area a lot since the pandemic and I can hands down say of the course I have played including memorial and tour 18 this course is by far the best and gives some private course a run for their money. The fairways and greens are perfectly manicured and it’s a fun overall layout. Challenging enough to make you plan your shots but still player friendly enough to play from outside of the fairways. The one critique I had was it was tough to get spin on approach shots on the green but that is tough to do anywhere right now in the Texas Summer. Highly recommend getting out to this course.
South course
Black horse is always a good course to play! It’s challenging, greens are in really good shape! I got it on a hot deal so it was really good bang for buck!
Great Property
Upon arrival, staff was extremely friendly and helpful in the pro shop, on the driving range and the starter shack. Course was in great shape and was challenging, but fair. Highly recommend playin this course!
Best greens I’ve played in 2021
The course was in excellent shape. The greens were the best I’ve played in 2021. Ever putt rolled true with good pace. The fairways were also in great condition. Will definitely go back!
