The Golf Club at Dove Mountain - Wild Burro/Saguaro
About
Nestled in the desert foothills of the Tortolita Mountain Range, the 27 holes at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain feature dramatic elevation changes and stunning views. The three nines were all designed by Jack Nicklaus and are played in three different 18-hole combinations. The Wild Burro/Saguaro golf course combines Nicklaus' favorite nine, Wild Burro, with the front nine of the Accenture Match Play Championship. The golf course features intricately contoured greens and carefully placed fairway bunkers. The course plays through canyons and desert washes covered in centuries-old Saguaro cacti. The third, fourth and fifth holes on the Wild Burro nine are notably challenging with the third featuring an "island green" standing amidst sand and cacti.

#3 on Saguaro Photo submitted by timstaley on 10/25/2012
extremely slow round. 5 hours needs improvement.
course conditions were very good. Greens fast and undulating. Putting a real challenge.
GPS and Pin location
The cart GPS distances to the front and rear of the green distances compared favorably with our GPS units. The Pin locations shown on the cart GPS were shown incorrectly. This made the course harder, due to most of the pins being protect by traps. The course design requires considerable walking up and down from the cart path to the green. We were not informed that carts were not allowed on the first hole of each nine. After finishing we were not given a reason for the restriction
Ripped Off by Slow Play
Course needs a Marshall. It took 3 hours to play 9 holes as the group in front us was ridiculously slow and would not let us play through. The next group was at least 3 holes clear of them. They were playing from the blue tees w/women’s tee skills. I paid a lot to play here and because of the slow play I was only able to complete 9 holes. I feel ripped off.
Great layout - tricky greens
Overall this is a great layout with tricky greens. Conditions could have been better with sanded greens on the front nine we played. Fairways are still a bit sparse and you can see that the over seeding didn't take very well as the grass is growing in strips. I previously played when the fairways were in much better condition.
Slow day on the course
The course is in fair shape, the fairways are scalped down low and the greens have taken a lot of unprepared abuse..
biggest issue was the slow pace of play. Not one ranger to to found out on the course so we waited on every shot.
exceptional course
very challenging and beautiful course. Excellent practice facilities and clubhouse/grill. Not a course for high handicappers as OB on nearly every hole, with many fairway hazards and intimidating greens. Still, should be on your bucket list as long as you lower your scoring expectations.
Beautiful course with tough greens
One of the most beautiful courses I have ever played. Fairways in excellent shape. Greens in good shape. Jack Nicklaus must be a sadist to have designed these greens because they are so undulating. And the greenskeeper must be related to Jack because pin placement was ridiculously difficult. Other than that, a great golfing experience. The cart guy said you need to play the course at least 20 times to know where to hit the greens. If you haven't done that, just enjoy the beauty of the course and the surroundings. I suggest playing one tee box closer than you normally would.
Always a pleasure to play here
This is a good golf course. From the pro shop through the round, a class operation, friendly and welcoming. Conditions were excellent and pace of play 3.5 hours. Traps well maintained, fairways full and there is heavy sticky overseeded rough. Greens rolled about 10.
Very challenging, Very beautiful, and Very special
This is an extremely beautiful course. Every hole could be a painting on my wall at home, For the price we played it at, it was a steal of a deal. Honestly wouldn't recommend this course to anyone above a 10 handicap unless you play a shorter tee. It's beautiful from every box though so give it a shot. I'll never forget this experience and for a public course, it's something special. If you find yourself in the area, you love golf, and you're willing to spend a bit of money to play a nice course, don't look anywhere else and book this place. Nice people too. 11/10. Hopefully can come back here in the future.
Unforgiving Greens
Beautiful course but tough greens. Not in fabulous shape for the $
Great Staff, course in good condition
Good pace of play,. Great views from almost every hole. Difficult greens to read and putt.
Fun challenge.
Amazing course
Amazing course......need to say that person in charge of pin placemens must have been on Crack. ......not fair at all. .... 4 putted a number of holes
Very scenic course
Beautiful course club house and restaurant.layout is great. Toughest greens I’ve ever played loved the challenge. Can’t wait to play again.
Disappointed
I know people love this course. It was on my bucket list for several years. Of course the property and facilities are beautiful and the staff was excellent. The course is visually stunning and I did have a great time! I played Tortolita/Saguaro from the copper tees. My disappointment lies in the fact that I thought the course was a bit too "tricked out" for most players over a single-digit handicap. Especially Tortolita. If you don't put your ball within a 5-10 yd area, the penalties are severe on the fairways and particularly on the greens. Every green has false edges and nearly every green is multi-tiered requiring extreme accuracy or ridiculously sloped and mounded putts. Only the longest hitters will clear the washes crossing most of the fairways. Forced into a layup off the tee you then face long shots in to extremely guarded greens.
In the end, there are several other courses in the Tucson area which are just as stunning, a bit more fair, in as good or better condition and 30-50% less expensive.
Great course but disappointed
How can anybody be critical of a day playing golf in beautiful weather on Dove Mountain with hardly anyone on the course. I guess when you play there and pay a premium price you expect a lot. This is our third time over the last 2 years and this time we have a couple of gripes. Firstly there is a mandatory $5 pp surcharge Over and above your green fee termed a cart fee for the “shark experience”. It is nothing more than a ripoff that Greg Norman has sold certain courses and installed in their cart gps. We ended up using our Garmins as the cart yardage was to the middle of the green unless you fiddled with the thing. Secondly the sand traps were raked but have not been worked properly. There was an inch or so of top sand but a hardpan base. Your club bounced and guess where your sand shot ended up. Thirdly, and this could have been just our particular day, the pin placements were Sunday “big tournament” evil placements. We are all around 5 handicap players so not scratch but not 15 either. The pin placements made the experience less enjoyable than it should have been. All in al a great day in the sunshine with friends but somewhat disappointed in Dove Mountain.
Best time of the year
Very limited play this time of year. Gets busy during 'snowbird' time.
