The Golf Club at Dove Mountain - Tortolita/Wild Burro
About
The desert foothills of the Tortolita Mountain Range provide the stunning backdrop for the three nines designed by Jack Nicklaus at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain. They are played in three different 18-hole combinations, one of them being Tortolita/Wild Burro. The Tortolita nine serves as the back nine for the PGA Tour's Accenture Match Play Championship, but Nicklaus considers Wild Burro to be the best of the three. Playing through canyons and desert washes, the golf course features dramatic elevation changes and stunning views. Tortolita's third hole has the highest elevation at the club while the ninth hole on Wild Burro is the longest finishing hole of any of the nines. The intricately contoured greens and strategic fairway bunkering provide a challenge for even experienced golfers.

Nice Outing
Course was in very good shape. Traps need some work....many were too hard which caused club to bounce more than normal but that was the only thing with the course that was subpar. Tough greens to read but very fair. It made for a great day. Many holes can have a long carry to green, so pick your tees accordingly.
Where is everyone?
Played the Wild Burro & Saguaro course. Wild Burro greens will kick your butt. The greens were running about 11 but felt like 15 with the undulations. The Saguaro greens were more like 8-9 and not as undulated. Bring your A game but don't be intimidated. Hit it straight, enjoy the scenery and have FUN.
The Wild Burro & Tortolita is the hardest layout. Both sides have undulating greens so expect at least 6 3-putts and maybe even a 4 or 5 putt to really make you pucker.
In prime time January, there were not many people. I played at 10am and only played thru one 2-some. Not many people play this layout. What a waste!! Go out there and have some fun.
Thank you for coming out to play and for leaving such a detailed review! We hope to see you again soon.
Most beautiful and diffizile Course we ever played!
A perfect golfday! Everything is still great!
Would like to play more then one time, but we are only in this region a short time. To sad!
Awesome! Thank you for the 5 star review. We are so happy you had a perfect golf day at Dove Mountain! We look forward to seeing you again the next time you are in the area.
Not a course for seniors
As usual with a Nicklaus course, this course features forced carries over hazards, incredibly deep bunkers, and severely undulating greens. I'm a good putter, and I 3-putted 8'times. We paid $109 green fees for the privilege of being beat up on. We wondered why on a beautiful, warm, January day there were few players. We found out.
We apologize if you found the course to be too difficult for you, but truly appreciate you coming out to play and leaving a review.
Amazing
Excellent courses, played the Wild Burro and the Saguaro. Both in perfect condition and really beautiful. This course is not for everybody, they are difficult and challenging. I would say for below 18 hdc.
Bring your best putting game
Course is very challenging especially around the greens (bunkers and swales) but most of all on the greens. If you miss the pin location on the high side a three putt is very likely because of the slopes and speeds of the greens. However, overall a very enjoyable game even though I did stray into the desert a couple of times.
Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your recent round at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain! We are happy you had a very enjoyable game at our course.
Tough course!
Beautiful facility with a very difficult golf course. I am a 10 handicap and shot 102? Most difficult greens I have ever played & putted on? My opinion they need to resurface all greens by flattening them which will make the course much more playable for average player.
Thank you for the feedback. We truly appreciate hearing what our golfers have to say. We hope you will come tee it up again soon and give Dove Mountain another shot!
Dove Mountain: you can keep the greens
Great course except that Mr Nicklaus lost control in the green design. Typical green has less than 30% puttable area. Everyone commented that a few greens like a miniature golf course is cute, but 18 is over the top.
Thank you for the feedback from your recent round at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain. We are sorry to hear our green designs did not meet your expectations. Hopefully you will give us another shot sometime in the near future. Thanks!
Play this course
Difficult layout. Greens fast and tricky. Beautiful views and framing of holes is outstanding. Bring your A game
Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your recent round at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain! Come tee it up again soon!
Best in tucson
Very difficult course by far bit the best overall course in Tucson. I have played all the public courses and is the biggest class and challenge.
Love this place when I can get a deal.
Wow, "best in tucson"! Thank you for the review! Come see us again soon.
Spectaculars Views
A must play in Southern Arizona. Great warm-up and practice area, including well marked driving range, and challenging sand and chipping area. Pace of play no problem for under 4 hour round on a Saturday afternoon. Challenging greens make you earn those birdies and pars. Fantastic value for the money on a hot deal tee time. I could play this course every week!
Thank you for the feedback from your recent round at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain! We are glad you enjoyed the spectacular views. We hope to see you again soon.
Always excellent
The real challenge is the green complexes. The pins were on plateaus with run offs on nearly all sides. Pick your misses well.
We are so happy to hear you believe The Golf Club at Dove Mountain is "always excellent"! Thank you for the review!
"Amazing"
I feel blessed to have been able to play such a fine venue. Will return as soon as possible.
Thank you for the 5 star review! We are pleased to hear you will be returning as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing you out on the course soon!
Beautiful course!!!!!
This is a must play course!!!! Beautiful landscape, the course is in excellent condition, and the people treat you how you should be treated at a golf course. I would love this course to be my home course! Wow O Wow!!!!
Thank you so much for the 5 star review! We are happy to hear you enjoyed everything from the landscape to how you were treated. Please come see us again soon!
Tale of Two Nines
I played the Wild Burro and Saguaro nines. Tee to green they played fairly similar however there were more blind tee shots on WB and Saguaro had more generous landing areas. The huge difference between the two nines were the greens. The Saguaro greens were relatively large, undulating and fast but fair while the WB greens were even larger, more undulating and just as fast. The landing areas around the hole locations were so small that it was nearly impossible to have an approach shot stop close to the hole, lots of 3- and 4-putts which slows down the pace of play. The WB greens are ridiculous. It annoys me to no end that I paid money to play on them. If you play Dove Mountain, make sure you book the Saguaro/Tortolita nines. I will not ever play the WB nine again unless the green complexes are bulldozed and re-done.
Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate hearing what our golfers have to say, the good and the bad. Sorry to hear you didn't have a good experience with the Wild Burro greens.
mr
5***** all the way.course conditions great. Very challenging especially greens but very fair ample area to hit tee shots.
Drove 2 hours but worth it !
Thank you for driving 2 hours to play a round at Dove Mountain! We appreciate it and your 5 star review!
Good, not great
I played the Saguaro - Tortolita combo in late November and I must say that I really wanted to like the course more than I did.
In general, the course was in good condition, tees and fairways have grown in from the overseeing well, the grass on the greens is a bit thin but it does not stop them from running pretty fast and they put fairly true, although there were a fair number of pitch marks and other defects in the greens that were pretty visible.
I think my overall disappointment comes from the design. I've played other Jack Nicklaus courses and have thoroughly enjoyed them, this one is different. Almost every hole has a forced carry on either the drive or a subsequent shot and on those holes without a carry, there are a number of bunkers in the areas where you are supposed to hit the ball. I spent a good part of the day being frustrated with the difficulty that the course imposed on my round. In many cases, I would say that I just had a bad day, but I was hitting some pretty good quality shots that were still taking odd bounces and ending up in bad places. One example was the second par 3 on the Tortalita course, I hit a shot to the right side of the green and the shot had a nice little draw. I expected it to land on the right third of the green and roll left a bit towards the hole, instead it bounced hard left and rolled off the green into a bunker. On most courses if I hit this shot, it would have stayed on the green and been in great shape - but this was one of many examples of bad bounces and penal hazard placement on the Dove Mountain Course.
I give it high ranking for the conditions and staff but when in the Tucson area I will not likely play this course much, I would much rather play some other tracks that I am familiar with and that I enjoy more than this one.
Thank you for the feedback from your recent round at Dove Mountain. We apologize you didn't enjoy the design of our course. Hopefully you will give us another shot and become more familiar with our track.
Must play course
This is a challenging course in a spectacular setting.
Great facilities and staff. Some long carries so play the correct tees for your handicap.
Course conditions are consistently excellent, well worth your time and investment.
Enjoy
Thank you for the 5 star review! We are happy to hear you enjoyed our facility and that are staff took care of you. We hope to see you again soon.

Ambiance
Beautiful course in a beautiful setting on a beautiful day...life is good! Our back nine...the Saguaro...was cart path only but we didn't know until we actually started play there...no one bothered to tell us. No club/ball washers on the course or on the cart.
Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your recent experience at Dove Mountain! We appreciate hearing what our golfers have to say. Come tee it up again soon!
Thank you for coming out to play and for the five-star review! We appreciate the feedback on the bunkers and we are glad they didn't take away from your experience at all.
