Houston National Golf Club
About
Houston National Golf Club, located in the northwestern part of the city, definitely follows the old adage that "everything is bigger in Texas." This whopping course stretches to 7,337 yards from the back tees. It is a lengthy golf course no doubt, but it doesn't just favor those who can hit long. The layout has a unique links design, so long hitters will be pleased but they will have to be careful of the numerous pot bunkers and other strategically placed hazards waiting treacherously throughout. The golf course has an interesting character that sets it apart from others nearby thanks to a landscape of rolling hills and hardly any trees, a surprise since there is no shortage of trees in the area. Houston National Golf Club's wide-open links design also subjects golfers to the strong prevailing winds, making several of the holes especially tricky.

Decent value
The front nine are in pretty good shape the 10-12 greens are in rough shape. Sand traps are in really bad shape and I would not recommend hitting out of them. The fair ways were pretty good and hitting out of the rough is challenging it’s very thick. This course challenges you if you miss fairways. As others have mentioned because the rough is thick you lose balls slightly left or right of the fairway. I lose 2 and they were maybe 5-9 yards right of the fairway.
Overall I’d play to again. I paid roughly 55 for the round which was a good value. Tee boxes are mostly in good shape staff was nice and helpful.
Course Conditions
Greens were okay. However, the rest of the course was less than ideal. Bunkers were horrible and a lake in the middle of the par 5 12th hole. Serious drainage issues. The $92 weekend rate is not was overpriced IMO. You can tell they are putting all the money into the Members course.
Not worth full price
The conditions have gotten really bad. Weeds around the fringe and rough way to long for non-tournament play, many dirt patches in the fairway. Some areas the rough is so low long it’s impossible to find your ball.
Very, but not too challenging course with narrower fairways and many more, also steeper hills than other courses
Easy to find each hole without needing a GPS, navigation map through the golf cart, they also have a car that goes around if you want to buy an extra drink or two while you play
Horrible golfing experience
I've played Houston International GC 8 times this year and this most recent round (07/25/26) will likely be my last for a very long time. There were so many issues! My tee time was at 10:30 AM, and the round took 5 ½ hours to complete because the Marshall was very liberal with allowing slow play by the 10:00 AM foursome. I didn't even play holes 13-17 because of the back-up. My cart mate and I drove through the aforementioned holes to see what was going on and potentially forego playing the remaining holes, only to observe the 10 AM foursome fishing for golf balls with NO GOLFERS playing ahead of them. Unbelievable!! We drove pass them and two small children (approximate ages: 8 and 5 yrs old), were instructed by one of the adult golfers to move the cart up as we drove by them. So, we drove through the 17th tee box and dropped our balls within our typical distance hitting driver off the tee box, so that we can hit an approach shot and putt out. We then drove to the 18th hole and it was wide open (SMDH!). We played the entire hole and ended our round. All but the greens were in really bad shape. I payed $96.35 for a round and course condition that was only worth $50.00. By the way, I was part of a foursome and all of our carts malfunctioned on the 12th hole, literally moving in slow motion. I called and spoke with Dennis in the pro shop, only to be told that there's nothing he can do other than reset the GPS. He did, and the issue still existed for all of the 12th hole, and recovered on the 13th hole. He offered to have someone bring out a different cart, but the issue had already resolved itself. I asked him to turn my GPS off and he said he couldn't do it because then it would allow me to drive anywhere on the course, essentially implying that I would violate golf course rules. I'm 52 years old and fanatical about doing things the right way and being a good citizen. Very disappointing! I'm going back to my home course: Memorial Park GC. Or, my other two favorites: Tour 18 GC and Golf Course at Houston.
Bad course conditions and pace of play
Unkept rough, terribly kept fairways, badly kept greens, terrible pace of play, and about $50 over a fair price.
Overgrown rough and poor fairways
Fairways were in poor condition and rough were very high uncut. Lost lot of balls in rough. Greens were in good condition. Thr course has good layout, contours and can be a very good course if maintained, Course is need of maintenece.
Decent experience - Do not recommend for beginners
Overall, I’d say we had a decent experience. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and very accommodating to our schedule, which we really appreciated. The course offers great amenities, and the beverage cart attendant was awesome—friendly, attentive, and made the round more enjoyable. The pricing was also very reasonable, making it a good value.
The course itself was definitely challenging. There are a lot of hills and thick rough, and I lost several balls in the tall grass that I thought would be easy to find. Hitting out of the rough was also difficult. I’m still new to golf and have only been playing for about four months, so that definitely contributed to my experience. More experienced golfers will likely appreciate the challenge. I’d recommend bringing a few extra golf balls if you play here!
No longer worth the free lunch
The decline of this course continues. 8:30am tee time and it took over 4.5 hours to play. Rough and fairways looked like they had not been cut in days, yet the greens were sheared. Large marks on almost all of the greens. Fairways and rough are now a mix of what seems to be bermuda, st. augustine and weeds.
Greens were aerated
There should be some sort of notice when greens are punched. The food was gone when we were done with our round.
Wasn't the greatest
First all the greens have recently been airrated and putting was horrible. Rough was tall and almost unplayable and the pace of play was horrible. Teed off at 10:40 am and finished at 4pm. 5 hrs and 20 minutes for a round in 100 degree heat and humidity.
