Vaaler Creek Golf Club
About
Conveniently located near downtown San Antonio not too far from Austin, Vaaler Creek Golf Club has a memorable layout of gently rolling hills dotted with creeks, ponds and lakes. The course begins with a challenging front nine and then eases up a bit on the back nine, but overall it is a formidable test. The greens are tricky and demanding, especially on the front nine where there are some severe slopes and undulations. The back nine greens are a bit flatter but they still require careful attention. The rolling, contoured fairways are lined with trees and there are deep bunkers strategically guarding the greens, but luckily there are only seventeen of them. Water hazards come into play throughout and there are also several doglegs and blind shots if there wasn’t enough to keep you on your toes.

I think it is one of the best courses within an hour from San Antonio.
I would highly recommend the drive to this course as it is well worth the investment of time and money. We were a twosome and played behind two foursomes in 4 hours. Where else can you do that on a public course? I am a member the The Dominion and this course is every bit as challenging and beautiful.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
I will be going back as often as i can.
Not conveniently located and yet the course conditions were also poor
The course is not conveniently located which is fine if the course conditions are either good or, if not, communicated up front and the price of the round reflects the adverse conditions. The course aerated their greens on Mon/Tue (confirmed by starter), didn’t communicate the adverse conditions, and still had the cojones to charge $100 for the joy of watching your ball either plinko itself among the aeration holes or rooster tail excess sand the full length of the putt. If you were lucky, you could experience both ends of that spectrum on a single putt. If I’m going to drive that far, I need some assurances that conditions are communicated or the price of the round is discounted to an acceptable point reflective of the adverse conditions. This was a blatant money grab and I won’t do business w/ a course who operates this way. Can’t recommend for others to make such a long drive for such poor value and unacceptable conditions.
Excellent course condition and layout tee to green
Fairways Grear but Greens ...hmmm
Apparently, the greenskeeper decided to aerate and sand the greens during a high volume part of the year. There was so much sand that it created tiny mounds on the green. No matter how you read a putt, the sand is going to dramatically influence pace and break. Regardless, I understand the need to protect the greens; however, the management needs to provide discounted rates while the greens exhibit high amounts of sand. I found it utterly ridiculous they would not even offer. At least provide winter rates for the 2-3 weeks it takes to recover. I recommend calling in advance and ask if any maintenance is being performed.
The staff (starter, marshall's, cafe) were friendly, except the guy in the golf shop. He wasn't terribly excited about his job, I suppose. The range was in good shape, but the practice bunker amd chippong area need some care. All in all, the practice zone wasn't terrible.
My buddy and I had a club and grilled chicken sandwich, and they weren't bad at all. The portions and prices were very reasonable.
The overall green fee ($90) seems a bit high for the course and area, but inflation likely plays a big role.
All in all, I would play the course again. They have great GPS maps in the cart, and the fairways looked great due to the recent rains.
Surprise!!
The course itself was well-maintained, with beautiful fairways and challenging holes that cater to both beginners and seasoned golfers. The layout provided a good mix of open spaces and strategic hazards, keeping the game interesting throughout.
However, I was disappointed that the course failed to notify me about the greens being sanded during my visit. It would have been helpful if this information was mentioned either during the booking process or at check-in. As a result, this significantly negatively impacted the experience.
Vaaler Creek is a well-designed and enjoyable golf course. However, it is important for the management to improve communication regarding course maintenance, such as the sanding of greens, to ensure a better overall experience for golfers.
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us. We are going to pass on your feedback to the team. Thanks for visiting Vaaler Creek Golf Club, and we hope to see you again in the future.
Hidden gem
Unbelievably great conditioned course impressive! Hats off to the green geeking staff👏👏👏🤙
Beautiful course.
Great course layout. I appreciated the Starter giving me great advice regarding layup holes, and greens conditions.
Great Condition
I play weekly at different courses in the area. At this time, the condition of this course is the BEST of all in the San Antonio area. Course is challenging and fun!! I’ll be back!
Course was in great shape, both fairways and greens
Played here recently (May 2023) with a group from a nearby MGA (about 60 players). Had a great time. Course condition is excellent. Weather was perfect. Very good value for the money. Only 1 thing could have been improved and that was the quality of food after our round. I ordered a hot dog which took some time to receive and when I got it, it wasn't cooked. It was cold. Terrible. The food is usually pretty good, so maybe they were having a bad day or had a hard time with 60 of us hitting them at once after our round. Either way, the hot dog was disappointing from this normally good golf course grill.
Hello Joe, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We apologize that the course conditions did not meet your expectations during your recent visit and for any miscommunication about the aeration schedule. We take your comments seriously and will use them to improve our services for all golfers.
